SUMMARY:ITE Southwestern Ontario: First Annual Trail Ride
DESCRIPTION:Hi Everyone! \nCome join us for our first annual trail ride!  SW Ontario has many great rural cycling links between our communities\, so what better way to learn about them than to ride them? \nThis year we will begin and end at Rural Roots Brewing Company in Elmira.  We’ll meet at 10:45am in their parking lot\, then ride about 1 km through town to the G2G trail\, where we’ll travel about 5 km east to West Montrose.  There we will check out the covered bridge (aka the Kissing Bridge) which was built in 1881 and is listed on Canada’s Register of Historic Places.  Please make sure to wear and ride with appropriate gear\, this is best with a standard bike (not racer tires). \nIndividual registration is required but there’s no charge to participate and no limit on the number of participants\, so come on out and bring a colleague or friend! \nWe can’t wait to see you there! \nPlease note: \n\nIt’s not overly challenging\, this is meant to be a leisurely ride\, but please be aware of your abilities;\nThere will be a gravel surface\, some traffic interaction\, and some grades;\nEach participant should have their own bike\, but we may be able to line up a spare or two in case someone doesn’t have one; and\nThere is limited parking available there\, so carpooling might be the best option for anyone who arrives from outside the area.\n\nDetails: \nPrice: FREE!   ITE Southwestern Ontario: First Annual Trail Ride – ITE Canada \nDate: Saturday September 28\, 2024 \nEquipment: \n\nA bicycle with regular tires (mixed surfaces\, asphalt and gravel)\nAn adult helmet (suggested)\nWater\, bug spray\, sunscreen (suggested)\n\nSchedule: \n\nMeeting Time:    10:45 AM\nBike Ride to West Montrose (return)        11:00 – 12:00 noon (approximate)\nSocial time at Rural Roots Brewing Co to follow the ride.\n\nParking space is somewhat limited so carpooling is encouraged for anyone driving to the site.  Please contact JJongsma@London.ca to discuss carpooling options.

The proliferation of personal electric mobility and the shift in designing to accommodate cyclists of all ages and abilities has had a profound impact on our City’s mobility system. London had an excellent foundation to build upon\, the City’s beloved pathway system (the Thames Valley Parkway)\, and has continued to expand its protected cycling network starting in the core. \nThis tour will take participants on a journey to experience many of our cycling-focused projects over the past 5 years. We’ll ride on multi-use pathways\, protected bike lanes\, cycle tracks\, bike boulevards and a flex street. We’ll get to see a variety of intersection treatments to improve vulnerable user’s safety\, including dedicated cycling phases\, leading pedestrian intervals\, and signals exclusively for people walking and cycling. Our best example of complete streets will be on display including many streetscape\, transit and cycling amenities and improvements. \nTour Lead: \nDaniel Hall is a transportation engineer focused on implementing cycling and walking infrastructure improvements in the City of London. With a background in transit planning and cycling advocacy\, and as a committed cyclist\, he brings many perspectives to his design and planning efforts. He’s currently working on obtaining his professional planning designation to be able to use the term ‘plangineer’. \nA long-time resident of London\, Daniel and his wife Jess have two young children aged 6 and 8. As a goal\, Daniel aspires to create a transportation network for London that allows for comfortable and convenient travel by all abilities and by all modes of travel and helps to develop a city where he doesn’t have to drive his kids to their friend’s houses. \n

SUMMARY:ITE Southern Alberta: Canmore Bike Tour
DESCRIPTION:Date\nSaturday\, September 16\, 2023 \nSchedule\n\n10:00 am Meet at parking lot\n10:00 am-12:00 pm – Bike tour\n12:00 pm – Lunch Buffet at Iron Goat Lodge: Bar and Grill\n\nNotes\nBikes will not be provided for the tour. Please either bring your own or rent. Bike rental discounts of 20% off regular price are being offered by Rundle Mountain Bike Rental (1-1743 Bow Valley Trail)\, where regular and electric bikes are available. Attendees can book their bikes online ahead of time (only credit card info is needed\, no payment)\, and during pickup/payment mention they are part of ITE Southern Alberta Section Canmore Bike Tour to receive this discount. \nLocation\n500 Benchlands Trail (Parking lot off of Benchlands Trail across from Iron Goat Pub and Grill) \nCost\n\n$20 for Public Agency Members\n$35 for ITE members\n$40 for non-ITE members\n$15 for Student ITE Members\n($650 Sponsorship)\n\nTransportation corridors make up the vast majority of public space in communities. How we allocate and design that space fundamentally influences the way a community looks\, feels and operates. No other aspect of engineering has such a critical role in shaping not just operational aspects of how people move\, but also the social\, economic and environmental outcomes for communities. While the practice of transportation engineering is evolving\, even today the tools and techniques used often result in poor outcomes for communities. While solving short-term vehicle transportation problems\, traditional methods can leave communities with long term congestion\, and safety and accessibility issues.  Canmore is unique only in it’s constraints\, and these constraints have forced the community to adopt integrated approaches sooner and more aggressively than most. \nThis tour will lead participants through a range of designs and show where a different set of priorities have been applied. Narrow traffic lanes\, windy roads\, wide paths\, separated bicycle facilities\, raised mid-block crossings\, continuous crossings\, and near-side traffic signals will be highlighted as emerging best-practice.  Benefits of the trade-offs between convenience while driving and place-making will be on display throughout\, including in areas where lanes have been narrowed\, turn bays have been removed\, and four-lane cross-sections have been converted to three-lane roads.  We will travel by bicycle on some of Canmore’s best and worst infrastructure to experience first-hand being placed in a variety of situations by designers.  It is hoped that through this short glimpse into different infrastructure types\, you’ll leave with a strong impression of the impacts that transportation designs can have on the way people travel\, and more importantly\, how community is created by roadway designs. All cycling abilities are welcome! \nTour Lead\n \nAndy Esarte is a civil engineer and graduate of the University of Western Ontario\, and has managed the engineering department for the Town of Canmore for the past 12 years. During that time he has overseen the development of Canmore’s first Integrated Transportation Plan in 2013 and subsequent update in 2018\, as well as Canmore’s first Integrated Parking Management Plan in 2018.  Prior to joining the Canmore team\, Andy worked as a project manager for light rail transit projects for the City of Calgary and designed bridges and heavy civil structures in consulting. \nResidents of Canmore since 2013\, Andy and his wife Karen have two young children aged 9 and 11. As a goal\, Andy aspires to creating a transportation network for Canmore that allows for safe and accessible travel by all residents and visitors to Canmore\, regardless of age or ability\, and with equity between travel modes.

SUMMARY:ITE Southern Alberta: Montgomery Main Street Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Montgomery Main Streets – Fall Walking Tour \nWe are pleased to be hosting a fall walking tour of the Montgomery Main Streets Project with Ervina Hendra and Marcia Eng. This project received the 2022 ITE International Transportation Achievement Award in Complete Streets. \nThe Montgomery Main Streets – Bowness Road project improves the road\, community\, and public spaces for everyone who lives\, commutes through\, and visits Montgomery. The design right-sized driving lanes and created safer and more inviting spaces for people walking and bicycling with widened sidewalks\, street trees\, street furnishing\, plaza area and a raised cycle track to turn Montgomery into a destination. The Montgomery Main Streets – Bowness Road project is one of the first of 24 Main Street projects that moved to construction. The city’s Main Streets program implements a comprehensive process to transform main streets into places where people want to live work and play\, recognizing the need for both public and private investment to make the area more attractive to businesses and residents. Creating a high-quality streetscape in an established area requires that the design and construction are both innovative and collaborative. For Montgomery Main Streets\, that included piloting new materials for accessibility\, stormwater\, and landscape designs. \nBowness Road runs through the heart of the community and is fronted by a mix of residential\, small business and mixed-use buildings. It connects to recreations centers\, schools\, and large regional parks along the Bow River. During construction the project team knew maintaining traffic and pedestrian flow and maintaining access to private properties was of utmost importance. Relationships with the Montgomery Community Association and Montgomery Business Improvement Area during public engagement and construction created an environment of trust for the intent\, design\, and implementation of the city’s newest main street \nErvina and Marcia will highlight key design features of the project as part of the walking tour\, and share lessons learned and best practices that transportation practitioners in Southern Alberta can adopt in their project activities. We will conclude the tour at Rising Tides Tap Room with a celebratory toast to the award winning Montgomery Main Streets Project and Team. \nErvina Hendra\, P.Eng.\, PMP\, LEED AP®\, Senior Transportation Engineer\, Urban and Community Systems\, The City of Calgary – Public Spaces Delivery \nErvina is a Senior Project Manager with over 17 years of experience in a wide variety of infrastructure projects from vertical builds to transportation corridors. Her career includes both public and private sector. Ervina is inspired by how her engineering work touches the communities she lives in and visits. \n  \nMarcia Eng\, P.Eng.\, Senior Transportation Engineer\, Urban Systems Ltd. \nMarcia is a Senior Transportation Engineer with a diverse range of transportation planning and operations\, urban design and construction\, and project management experience spanning over 22 years. She always aspires to improve mobility for all people through planning and designing better integrated systems and accessible infrastructure that provides a sense of safety and comfort. \n  \nThe cost of the tour is a sliding scale. All funds raised will be donated to Youth En Route; A local charity whose mission is to inspire and support active transportation to school and beyond.

SUMMARY:APBP Ontario Chapter/ITE National Capital Section: Nepean Bike Trail Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join the Ontario Chapter of the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals (APBP) and ITE NCS on a fun bicycle ride to explore the recently constructed east portions of the Nepean Trail\, a 5 km cycling corridor that runs parallel to and acts as a quiet alternative to busy Merivale Road.  Conceived by Nepean residents and promoted by a candidate ward councillor\, this route was included as an ‘affordable project’ in the 2013 Ottawa Cycling Plan.  Consisting of a variety of cycling facility types\, the route illustrates how policy for bicycle planning in Ottawa shifted towards a corridor approach in contrast to the previous piecemeal opportunity-based approach.  City staff will be present to answer questions and provide information about the planning\, design and construction of the route. \n  \nSpace is limited to 25 people\, with priority to active members of APBP or ITE. If you sign up and will not be able make it\, please let us know so we can free up a spot.
