SUMMARY:ITE Southern Alberta: September Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Date: September 19\, 2023 \nTime: 11:30am-1pm \nLocation: Danish Canadian Club (727 11 Ave SW\, Calgary\, AB T2R 0E3) \nCost: \n\n$20 for Public Agency Members\n$35 for ITE members\n$40 for non-ITE members\n$15 for Student ITE Members\n($650 Sponsorship)\n\nPresentation:\n\nOver the past couple years\, Cochrane has been a flurry of activity with improvements to Highway 1A and Highway 22 in full force. Two major projects have been underway: First\, Highway 1A Improvements which included widening from two lanes to four from Centre Ave to First St\, and the realignment of 4th Ave including a major secant retaining wall. Second\, an interchange at the infamous Highway 1A and Highway 22 intersection which includes widening the remaining section of Highway 1A to Highway 22. Two consulting firms have been heavily involved in the design and construction of these long-awaited projects. Urban Systems and ISL. \nUrban Systems is working with the Town of Cochrane and supported by Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (ATEC)\, to widen Highway 1A through the community\, adapting the plans developed by ISL\, and taking it through to construction with the support of Provincial grant funding. This widening has long awaited by the Town and dovetails into ATEC’s major upgrade at the Highway 1A and 22 interchange. \nJohn and Melissa will discuss the Highway 1A Improvements project and the unique features involved when delivering a multiple jurisdictional highway project. They will also cover Urban Systems’ involvement in the Highway 1A/Highway 22 Project enabling works\, the collaborative process employed and unique tasks involved the work. John and Melissa will expand on the out-of-the-box collaborative thinking that got the project off to a successful start for all parties. \nATEC with ISL\, have advanced the interchange construction of Highway 1A and Highway 22\, tying into the Highway 1A Improvements. The interchange will support the growth of the Town\, improve access to this area\, allow efficient movement of goods and people\, and enhance safety.  Vamsi and Dominic will discuss the unique challenges presented by the project and lessons learned. \nThese long-awaited projects are being delivered in partnership with Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors and the Town of Cochrane. \nSpeakers: \nUrban Systems \n \nJohn Stevens: John has worked at Urban Systems for 6 years on a variety of transportation and local government projects. These projects include the 88th Street SE Skeletal Road extension\, the Hwy 1A/22 utility relocations project\, and the HWY 1A Improvements project of which the last two will be discussed today. Through these projects John has taken a more prominent role in liaising with the Town of Cochrane and was the project manager for both Hwy 1A Improvements project and Hwy1A/22 utility relocations project. Playing a role in improving these vital transportation connection projects for one of Alberta’s fastest growing communities has been a rewarding process and John looks forward to sharing this project with everyone. \n  \n  \n  \n \nMelissa Henderson: Melissa has worked at Urban Systems for the past 2 years as a civil engineer-in-training. Over these 2 years she has worked on a variety of projects with The Town of Cochrane\, including the Flood Recovery and Erosion Control projects\, and the HWY 1A/22 utility relocations project which will be discussed today. Melissa played a key role in supporting Urban System’s local government team on the Hwy 1A/22 utility relocations project as contract administrator. She is excited to share some of her experiences on the project and how collaboration with ISL and Alberta Transportation \nand Economic Corridors lead to greater success for all parties. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nISL \n \nVamsi Surapaneni: Vamsi is ISL’s lead design engineer for the Highway 1A/22 interchange. He developed the now in-construction solution within the constrained space of historic lands\, major utility pipeline corridor\, CPKC tracks\, and Bighill Creek. Thanks to Vamsi\, Cochrane is witness to over one million cubes of earth being moved at this site. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nDominic Cheng: Dominic is one of ISL’s long-standing team members involved with the design of Highway 1A from the top of the hill at Gleneagles Drive westward to Horse Creek Road. He has seen the design of Highway 1A/22 evolve from an intersection upgrade to the interchange that is under construction today.
