SUMMARY:ITE Northern Alberta: December 2024 Luncheon & AGM
DESCRIPTION:The Dutch Way – Innovation In Active Transportation\nSponsored by ISL Engineering\n\nProtected bike lanes are popping up everywhere. They started appearing in Canada in around 2010\, and cities across the country have since been incorporating them into their streets to enhance active transportation infrastructure ever since. We’re making tremendous progress in active transportation design across Canada\, but to achieve community goals to increasing walking and cycling\, we need not only more infrastructure\, but better infrastructure to address issues that still persist. We don’t need to start from scratch. The Dutch have been designing and refining their active transportation infrastructure for over 50 years\, and there’s so many valuable lessons we can all still learn from. ISL’s Sustainable Transportation Specialist\, Roy Symons has dedicated much time in recent years to experiencing and documenting all aspects of their infrastructure with the intent of bringing those lessons back to Canada. ISL will begin the presentation by outlining some of their recent active transportation project highlights and follow up with a series of innovations not yet widely adopted in Canada\, that might help us take that next step towards supporting our bigger picture goals. \n  \nAbout the Presenters:\n \n  \nRoy Symons \nRoy Symons is ISL’s Sustainable Transportation Specialist working across Western Canada. His passion for Dutch design led to the adoption of continuous sidewalks as a standard in Canada for the first time with the City of Nanaimo\, something that sparked a movement across the country\, and since then\, recognizing that it takes more than a protected bike lane or intersection to fully support active modes\, he has continued to pursue other Dutch techniques on his projects in Canada\, as well as changes to Canadian guidance. He has authored three books on bicycle facility planning and design and blogs about street design at rollinginthecity.ca\, where he shares street design examples and best practices. \n  \n \n  \nDan Zeggelaar \nDan Zeggelaar is ISL’s Sustainable Transportation Lead working in Edmonton and across Alberta. Dan was the lead engineer for the Rossdale Transportation Network providing cycling routes from Walterdale Bridge into Downtown Edmonton. He is also leading the planning for 7 km of new bike routes in Edmonton and just authored Airdrie’s first Active Transportation Plan. Through his role as Sustainable Transportation Lead\, Dan continues to support clients in road safety\, master planning and traffic operations. Dan is a certified Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE)\, Professional Transportation Planner (PTP)\, and Road Safety Professional (RSP1). Dan is also a regular cyclist with family and for sport and recently became the back-to-back (2023 and 2024) Cycling Canada E-sports National Champion. \n  \n  \nLunch will be served at 11:45 am and the presentations will start at 12:00 pm. The first 10 minutes of the program will be dedicated to the AGM. \nRegular pricing is active until December 3rd. Late registration charges will apply at 11:00 AM on December 3rd.\n\nParking Changes Starting Fall 2024!!!\nGuest Parking at the University Club has changed starting August 2024. SUMMARY:ITE Canada & CARSP Joint Webinar: Design Guide for Bus Stops Adjacent to Cycling Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This webinar is now at capacity.  \nTransLink\, in partnership with the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI)\, recently retained Urban Systems to create the Design Guide for Bus Stops Adjacent to Cycling Infrastructure (download here\, PDF 14.8 MB) to provide province-wide guidance to develop “island platform bus stops” or “floating bus stops” in British Columbia.  The Design Guide provides a comprehensive set of planning and engineering guidelines offering solutions for the planning\, design\, operation\, and maintenance of bus stops adjacent to protected cycling infrastructure in a range of contexts and applications throughout British Columbia\, along with guidance for education and engagement. This Design Guide is the first of its kind in North America and addresses a significant gap in knowledge on how to design bus stops to meet the needs of people with disabilities while also being comfortable for cyclists of all ages and abilities. The Design Guide was developed with extensive stakeholder engagement\, including pilot projects in five municipalities in British Columbia. The Design Guide was awarded both the ITE Canada Stan Teply Outstanding Technical Project Award and the ITE International Transportation Achievement Award – Planning Award in 2024. \nThis virtual session will provide an overview of the Design Guide as well as lessons learned from municipal staff from two case study communities. \nRegistration for this webinar is FREE for current ITE and CARSP members. SUMMARY:ITE Greater Vancouver: ITE & PIBC Mixer - How Can Transportation Engineers and Planners Move Equity From Rhetoric to Reality?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation by Tessa Williams (RPP\, MSc) to learn more about the new report “Practices and inspiration for sustainable transportation equity: Case studies from Canadian cities.” Following the presentation there will be an opportunity for networking and discussion with fellow engineers and planners. \nNearly 1 million Canadians live in transportation poverty\, where their ability to access opportunities is limited by inadequate\, unsafe\, or unaffordable transportation options. City builders are recognizing that the way transportation has been planned\, designed\, and delivered is unfair and needs to change. The big question facing the transportation community is no longer whether to take action towards equity\, but how. The Report\, created by a team of transportation practitioners\, equity experts\, and researchers from across Canada\, the report shares promising practices to apply equity throughout the project life cycle\, from policy and strategy to learning and evaluation. The report has been featured by the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC)\, Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP)\, and Canadian Association of Road Safety Professionals (CARSP). \nTessa is transportation planner with Urban Systems with over four years of experience across three different provinces. She leverages her unique background in local government and research to contribute to active transportation\, land use\, transit\, parking\, and equity projects. Tessa served as research lead for the PISTE project\, with the goal of developing a report by and for transportation practitioners. \nWednesday\, April 17\n5:30-5:45 people arrive and get settled (in the presentation room)\n5:45-6:30 Tessa presentation and question time\n6:30-8 networking in the FUNK venue \nVenue:\nFUNK.
