SUMMARY:ITE Canada Prairie Sections – Joint Virtual Event Beyond the Horizon: Future-Proofing Transportation on the Prairies
DESCRIPTION:Delving into the current state and long-term vision for transportation on the Canadian prairies\, focusing on adaptability\, resilience\, and safety.\nThe Northern Alberta\, Southern Alberta\, Saskatchewan\, and Manitoba Sections are pleased to invite you to our first joint event\, entitled\, Beyond the Horizon: Future-Proofing Transportation on the Prairies. Speakers will focus on four key topics relevant to the current state and long-term vision of transportation on the prairies. This is an interactive session – we want to hear your thoughts and ideas. \nDate: Monday\, February 26\nTime: 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm MST (2:00 pm – 3:30 pm CST)\nRegistration Fee:\nMember: $5\nNon-Member: $10\nStudents: Free \nAll proceeds will be donated to Indspire\, a national Indigenous registered charity that invests in the education of First Nations\, Inuit and Métis people. \nSpeakers and Topics\nEmergency Response for Alberta Wild Fire Evacuation\nDr. Stephen Wong is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta and leads the Resilient and Sustainable Mobility and Evacuation (RESUME) Group. Dr. Wong’s research focuses on the intersection of disasters/emergencies\, decision-making\, and transportation and works to create more resilient\, environmentally friendly\, and equitable transportation systems. He is actively involved in resilience and young professional activities at the Transportation Research Board and evacuation research at the International Association for Fire Safety Science. Dr. Wong received his Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of California\, Berkeley in 2020. \n  \nRoad Safety Act Discussion\nMarcia Eng is a Senior Transportation Engineer and has over 23 years of diverse transportation planning and operations\, urban design and construction\, and project management experience. She has worked closely with clients in various municipalities throughout Alberta\, British Columbia and Manitoba to ensure safe and comfortable mobility options for people of all ages and abilities. She has developed a unique perspective of balancing competing needs through all phases of a project and between different roadway users. \nMarcia will share key insights from a panel discussion hosted by the Southern Alberta Section in November of 2023 that explored the ways in which transportation engineers interact with the provincial Road Safety Act\, and how we can best work together to support evolution of legislation while pursuing safe and equitable street design decisions. \nTechnology on the Highway: Are We There Yet?\nDerek Jaworski is a graduate of the University of Regina Faculty of Engineering\, and has worked for the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways since 2006. After working five years as a Traffic Engineer\, he became Manager of Traffic Services and has remained in that capacity since. His primary responsibility is managing traffic data on the highway and rural municipal road systems. In recent years\, his responsibility has expanded towards ITS\, including authoring and updating the Strategic Plan for ITS in Saskatchewan\, and overseeing ITS related operations. In TAC he is a member of the ITS Committee and participates in the Connected and Automated Vehicles Integrated Committee and the Technology Council. \nHis presentation will highlight some of the technology the Ministry of Highways uses from a monitoring and traveler information perspective\, and describe conditions that affect the operation of the system. While a plan for the future is on paper\, a few back-of-mind things will be mentioned that could shake the plan from more of the same. \nRural Intersection Road Safety\nDr. Craig Milligan is a recognized international expert in road safety engineering and product manager for safety technologies at Miovision as well as the managing director of Fireseeds North Infrastructure\, a leading road safety audit firm. He has completed more than 600 in-service road safety reviews and design audits at all stages for more than $8B of capital projects\, and he is a frequent road safety instructor for the International Road Federation. He built and led MicroTraffic\, a leading road safety video analytics company\, until its acquisition by Miovision in February 2023. He has authored 30 technical papers and 10 design guidelines. \nRural intersections are unfortunately the sites of many collisions resulting in fatalities and serious injuries. High speeds and right angles combine to produce high risk potential\, although there are opportunities to manage this risk through a wide range of interventions and design practices. This presentation will look at a spectrum of proven interventions for rural intersection safety and a spectrum of methods for deciding where to implement these interventions. In general this ranges from systemic\, wide scale application of low-cost interventions to focused application of high-cost interventions following screening and detailed risk diagnosis. \n*** \nAttendees will hear brief overview presentations from all speakers\, and then delve deeper into two topics during breakout group discussions. Come to hear ideas\, share ideas\, and connect with peers from across the prairies.  \nAgenda: \n\n\n\n1:00 pm – 1:10pm \nWelcome and introductions\n\n\n1:10pm – 1:35pm\nOverview presentations \n\n\n1:35pm – 1:55pm\nBreakout group 1\n\n\n1:55pm – 2:15pm\nBreakout group 2\n\n\n2:15pm – 2:30pm\nReconvene with all attendees\n\n\n2:30pm \nAdjourn formal session\n\n\n2:30pm – 3:00pm\nOptional networking period\n\nJoin Virtual Event:\nhttps://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3ameeting_Y2QzMjQ2NGItNzlmZi00YzMwLTkxODgtN2EwOTdlNzcwY2I4%40thread.v2/0?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%22340aac21-6d62-411f-88fb-2753784f2a28%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%220b7b7915-16e6-4838-a6a3-07bd68720e63%22%7d\n

SUMMARY:ITE Greater Vancouver: February Virtual Seminar - BC Highway Reinstatement Program Highway 5 - Category B Project
DESCRIPTION:ITE Greater Vancouver is pleased to have Victor Wang\, P.Eng. and  Jonathan Ho\, P.Eng.\, PTOE\, from Kiewit Engineering Group Canada ULC present on the BC Highway Reinstatement Program Highway 5 – Category B Project at 12:00 pm\, February 21\, 2024. The virtual seminar will be free and online. \nNovember 15\, 2023\, marked the two-year anniversary of the atmospheric river and subsequent historic flooding and landslides that caused extensive damage to the highway and across the Province of British Columbia. Less than two years after the historic event and two months ahead of schedule\, all final permanent bridges on Highway 5 at Jessica\, Juliet\, and Bottletop are open to public traffic in permanent four-lane configuration\, as the Project reached substantial completion. Highway 5 is now more resilient and reliable\, supporting the movement of people and goods along this important corridor. The new bridges are built to withstand high water levels by using deep-pile footings and longer spans. Large rock protection has been added to protect the bridges from erosion and scour. Trees\, shrubs and grasses have also been planted to encourage stream-side re-vegetation and support overall restoration of aquatic and land habitat. In total\, the alliance team and local Indigenous communities planted around 4\,500 native plants at these sites to help return the environment to its natural landscape. \nVictor Wang is a Professional Engineer with 30 years of experience and expertise in transportation engineering and planning. He also possesses the Master of Engineering degree with strong background in different phases of infrastructure projects. Victor has played major roles in full project-delivery cycle of infrastructure projects including planning\, design\, and construction\, with specific focus on P3\, Design/Build (DB) and Design/Build/Finance/Operate (DBFO) projects. Victor was the Discipline Engineering Manager of the BC Highway Reinstatement Program – Highway 5 Project. \nJonathan Ho has over 15 years of experience in transportation engineering and planning. He was involved in several major transportation engineering and planning projects throughout British Columbia\, which included the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project\, Pattullo Bridge Replacement Project\, Highway 99 and Steveston Interchange Project\, and the Highway 91/17 Improvement Project. Jonathan has also provided traffic management services on numerous infrastructure upgrades projects throughout Greater Vancouver. Jonathan was the Civil and Traffic Management Design Lead on the BC Highway Reinstatement Program – Highway 5 Project.\n\nJoin Virtual Event:\nhttps://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3ameeting_NjRkMzZmNjYtZTY1Ny00ZmEyLWE0ODItNmUyMDM0YjA3ZGY1%40thread.v2/0?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%22875688ea-8b21-4b98-b25b-4b81851ad72d%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%224a3ba1e2-3eaf-46fd-a2aa-5dc1b59160ca%22%7d\n

Jonathan was the Civil and Traffic Management Design Lead on the BC Highway Reinstatement Program – Highway 5 Project.

SUMMARY:ITE Southern Alberta: February Luncheon: Integrating Health into Transportation Planning
DESCRIPTION:In early 2021\, Urban Systems was funded by Health Canada to examine the current state of efforts to integrate and consider health in planning processes – including transportation planning and design – and based upon this research develop an easy-to-use guide that would serve as a resource for planning\, engineering\, and public health staff to understand how and when they could effectively support each other in creating healthier built environments. \nThrough this project\, the project team at Urban Systems was able to connect with built environment and public health professionals from across Canada and gain valuable insight into effective approaches to considering and quantifying health in various types of planning processes. These resources are currently being shared by both the Canadian Institute of Planners as well as the Federation of Canadian Municipalities as valuable guidance for their members seeking to design and develop healthier communities. \nIn this informative session\, Jamie Hilland will discuss observations and lessons learned through the development of these resources\, as well as practical applications for his own role as a Community and Transportation Planner in both public and private sectors. This interactive workshop will provide an overview of what health means in communities and within the context of transportation planning\, designing\, and decision-making. Jamie will provide an overview of his previous work with Health Canada and consider the social determinants of health. This will include a guided review of the Integrating Health in Planning guide\, an overview of the Health Impact Assessment five-step process and other methods to considering health implications in your next transportation plan or project. \nDate: February 20\, 2024\nTime: 11:30am-1:00pm\nLocation: Danish Canadian Club (727 11 Ave SW\, Calgary\, AB T2R 0E3)\nRegistration Deadline: February 16\, 2024 \nCost:\nIn-Person Options:\n• $20 Public Agency Members (in Calgary)\n• $30 ITE Members (in Calgary)\n• $40 Non-ITE Members (in Calgary)\n• $15 Student (in Calgary)\n• $20 ITE Members (in Lethbridge)\n• $25 Non ITE Members (in Lethbridge) \nOnline:\n• $15 All Members and Non-Members \nNote that this year\, in an effort to accommodate more transportation professionals across our province (especially those in Lethbridge)\, we’re offering additional attendance options. Participants that select the online ticket option will receive a link after registering and be able to watch the luncheon online. Participants that select the in-person option in Lethbridge will be able to join others for networking\, lunch and a live stream of the presentation at the Stafford Centre. Please reach out to Adam St. Amant if you have any questions about the Lethbridge event option. All other in-person ticket options are for attendance in Calgary. \n  \nSpeaker Bio\nJamie works as a Sustainable Transportation consultant for Urban Systems in their Winnipeg office. He also volunteers as a Board member of Active School Travel Canada\, is the current Chair of the Canadian Active Transportation Alliance. He is a past member of the Expert Advisory panel of the CHASE (Child Active Transport Safety and the Environment) study at the University of Calgary\, the National Round Table on Active Transportation\, and the Policy Committee for the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycling Professionals. \nMuch of Jamie’s work is centered around planning and designing healthy and sustainable communities through healthier\, safer\, and more sustainable transportation systems. This includes the development of the youth travel strategy for Metro Vancouver\, the National School Travel study for CAA\, the Canadian Sustainable Transportation Report for Colleges and Institutes Canada\, and active transportation study and design projects in Winnipeg\, Kenora\, the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg\, the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation\, Dauphin\, Windsor\, Neepawa\, and the Township of Langley. \nIn 2021 he led the development of a Health Canada funded study to examine how Health can be effectively considered and integrated into transportation planning process in Canadian communities. SUMMARY:ITE Southern Alberta: Bus Priority Measures in Calgary: Benefits and Requirements
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce the first ITE Southern Alberta Section event of 2024! Join us at the Danish Canadian Club for a presentation on Transit Priority from our very own ITE Executive Publicity Coordinator\, Bidoura Khondaker. \n*** \nTransit priority measures are an efficient tool in making transit a fast and reliable choice for transportation needs. These measures reduce bus delays\, improve schedule adherence and transit travel time reliability at known problem areas on a network. Transit priority measures not only benefit transit buses but also improve non-transit traffic flow moving in the same direction. Transit priority can be implemented in a variety of ways\, ranging from traffic signal control to providing dedicated space on roadways for transit. \nIn this talk\, Bidoura will highlight some of the bus priority measures (bus Queue Jump and Transit Signal Priority\, TSP in particular) that have been implemented in Calgary which forms an integral part of Calgary Transit’s plan. She will discuss the key requirements\, design aspects and benefits derived from these priority measures in making public transit service more efficient and reliable for users and providing an incentive to take the bus rather than drive. \nSpeaker Bio:\nBidoura Khondaker is a passionate\, enthusiastic and skilled Transportation professional with more than twelve years of blended experience in Academia and Industry. She is currently working as Senior Transportation Engineer in Service Planning\, Transit Service Design at Calgary Transit. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering\, Master’s Degree in Transportation engineering from University of British Columbia and PhD from University of Calgary. Bidoura has been actively involved with ITE since 2009\, recently joined ITE Southern Alberta as an executive committee member\, also currently working as an active volunteer member of the TAC Technology Council. Bidoura is committed to create a gender diverse and inclusive workplace\, she is a committee member of Women in Transit (WIT) and leading some key initiatives to enhance Calgary Transit’s commitment to women. As important as being a Transportation professional\, advocate of change and volunteer\, Bidoura is a mom too. Her time outside of work is spent learning the life lessons that only parenthood can bring. \nDate: January 16\, 2024\nTime: 11:30am-1:00pm\nLocation: Danish Canadian Club (727 11 Ave SW\, Calgary\, AB T2R 0E3)\nCost:\nIn-Person Options:\n• $20 Public Agency Members (in Calgary)\n• $30 ITE Members (in Calgary)\n• $40 Non-ITE Members (in Calgary)\n• $15 Student (in Calgary)\n• $20 ITE Members (in Lethbridge)\n• $25 Non ITE Members (in Lethbridge)\nOnline:\n• $15 All Members and Non-Members \nNote that this year\, in an effort to accommodate more transportation professionals across our province (especially those in Lethbridge)\, we’re offering additional attendance options. SUMMARY:ITE Southern Alberta: September Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Date: September 19\, 2023 \nTime: 11:30am-1pm \nLocation: Danish Canadian Club (727 11 Ave SW\, Calgary\, AB T2R 0E3) \nCost: \n\n$20 for Public Agency Members\n$35 for ITE members\n$40 for non-ITE members\n$15 for Student ITE Members\n($650 Sponsorship)\n\nPresentation:\n\nOver the past couple years\, Cochrane has been a flurry of activity with improvements to Highway 1A and Highway 22 in full force. Two major projects have been underway: First\, Highway 1A Improvements which included widening from two lanes to four from Centre Ave to First St\, and the realignment of 4th Ave including a major secant retaining wall. Second\, an interchange at the infamous Highway 1A and Highway 22 intersection which includes widening the remaining section of Highway 1A to Highway 22. Two consulting firms have been heavily involved in the design and construction of these long-awaited projects. Urban Systems and ISL. \nUrban Systems is working with the Town of Cochrane and supported by Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (ATEC)\, to widen Highway 1A through the community\, adapting the plans developed by ISL\, and taking it through to construction with the support of Provincial grant funding. This widening has long awaited by the Town and dovetails into ATEC’s major upgrade at the Highway 1A and 22 interchange. \nJohn and Melissa will discuss the Highway 1A Improvements project and the unique features involved when delivering a multiple jurisdictional highway project. They will also cover Urban Systems’ involvement in the Highway 1A/Highway 22 Project enabling works\, the collaborative process employed and unique tasks involved the work. John and Melissa will expand on the out-of-the-box collaborative thinking that got the project off to a successful start for all parties. \nATEC with ISL\, have advanced the interchange construction of Highway 1A and Highway 22\, tying into the Highway 1A Improvements. The interchange will support the growth of the Town\, improve access to this area\, allow efficient movement of goods and people\, and enhance safety.  Vamsi and Dominic will discuss the unique challenges presented by the project and lessons learned. \nThese long-awaited projects are being delivered in partnership with Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors and the Town of Cochrane. \nSpeakers: \nUrban Systems \n \nJohn Stevens: John has worked at Urban Systems for 6 years on a variety of transportation and local government projects. Through these projects John has taken a more prominent role in liaising with the Town of Cochrane and was the project manager for both Hwy 1A Improvements project and Hwy1A/22 utility relocations project. Playing a role in improving these vital transportation connection projects for one of Alberta’s fastest growing communities has been a rewarding process and John looks forward to sharing this project with everyone. \n  \n  \n  \n \nMelissa Henderson: Melissa has worked at Urban Systems for the past 2 years as a civil engineer-in-training. Over these 2 years she has worked on a variety of projects with The Town of Cochrane\, including the Flood Recovery and Erosion Control projects\, and the HWY 1A/22 utility relocations project which will be discussed today. Melissa played a key role in supporting Urban System’s local government team on the Hwy 1A/22 utility relocations project as contract administrator. She is excited to share some of her experiences on the project and how collaboration with ISL and Alberta Transportation \nand Economic Corridors lead to greater success for all parties. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nISL \n \nVamsi Surapaneni: Vamsi is ISL’s lead design engineer for the Highway 1A/22 interchange. He developed the now in-construction solution within the constrained space of historic lands\, major utility pipeline corridor\, CPKC tracks\, and Bighill Creek. Thanks to Vamsi\, Cochrane is witness to over one million cubes of earth being moved at this site. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nDominic Cheng: Dominic is one of ISL’s long-standing team members involved with the design of Highway 1A from the top of the hill at Gleneagles Drive westward to Horse Creek Road. He has seen the design of Highway 1A/22 evolve from an intersection upgrade to the interchange that is under construction today.

SUMMARY:ITE Southern Alberta: July Luncheon – University of Calgary Presentations
DESCRIPTION:Date: July 11th\nTime: 11:30am-1pm\nLocation: Danish Canadian Club (727 11 Ave SW\, Calgary\, AB T2R 0E3)\nCost:\n$20 for Public Agency Members\n$35 for ITE members\n$40 for non-ITE members\n$15 for Student ITE Members\n($650 Sponsorship) \nJoin us for another luncheon presentation at the Canadian Danish Club! This month we will be featuring THREE presentations\, all from the University of Calgary: \nPresentation #1: Use of Crowd Source Data in Transport Planning and Traffic Management_ Intro to MTRADA\nTravel time estimation is an essential element in transport planning and traffic management. The intervention of intelligent transportation systems\, sensors systems and remote sensing methodologies has enabled to estimate travel times in high accuracy. Most of the travel time estimation models in the literature are inductive in nature\, which require vehicle travel time observations for calibration. Obtaining vehicle travel time data is both a time consuming and costly process for a single link and it is impractical to collect this information for all the links across the road network. Hence\, there is a need for travel time estimation models that are low in cost and more robust. Use of crowdsourced data and vehicle tracking techniques has further enhanced the estimation algorithms with accuracy and efficiency where use of google travel time data extracted from Google Distance Matrix API is a novel approach to gather representative information about real-time traffic conditions. \nM-TRADA (https://uom.lk/civil/transportation/software/mtrada) is a Cloud Based data mining platform to collect travel time data using Google map APIs. It was developed in year 2017 by Transportation Engineering Division\, Department of Civil Engineering\, University of Moratuwa. M-TRADA has now been developed in to a fully functional\, verified cloud-based platform. \nThe workshop will cover the methodology to collect travel time data with Google Distance Matrix API using MTRADA nd use of the method in transport planning and traffic management applications. \nBiography\nDimantha De Silva is a Principal Consultant at CPCS. He is also a sessional lecturer at the University of Calgary. Prior to that he was a Senior Lecturer at Department of Civil Engineering at University of Moratuwa. He received his M.Sc. in Transportation Engineering and B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the University of Moratuwa\, Sri Lanka and completed his PhD in Transportation Engineering from University of Calgary\, Canada. His research interests includes integrated land use transport demand modelling\, Big Data Analytics. \nPresentation #2: Designing Integrated Public Mobility in and Around University of Calgary\n(Description coming soon!) \nBiographies\nJoel Lethaby recently graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a Transportation Engineering minor. Joel now works for Associated Engineering as a Transportation Engineer-in-Training. Previously\, he completed a 16 month internship with Urban Systems where he was initially exposed to “complete street” style projects working on the Montgomery Main Streets Bowness Road project. This project sparked his passion for safe\, vibrant\, multi-modal streets\, and Joel hopes to work on more projects like this throughout his career. \nEremiahs Fikre is a recent Civil Engineering graduate. He is passionate about all things transportation engineering\, specifically traffic safety. During his undergraduate degree\, he completed an internship at the City of Edmonton with the Safe Mobility Team in which he helped with various initiatives for the Edmonton’s goal of Vision Zero by 2030. He hopes to continue making an impact in the transportation sector. \nKarim Kandil is a Transportation Engineer-in-Training with a strong background in software and technical expertise. Over the past two years at ISL\, Karim has played a role in the planning\, design\, and construction phases of significant urban transportation projects in Calgary and its surrounding areas\, such as the 26 Avenue SW Improvements and Downtown Flood Barrier. Driven by a passion for creating equitable and sustainable transportation networks\, Karim actively seeks innovative solutions that cater to the diverse needs of people of all abilities. Currently\, Karim is engaged in the development of a system that visualizes and analyzes transit performance throughout Calgary\, aiming to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of public transportation in the city. \nPresentation #3: Urban Calgary Student’s Association\nUrbanCSA works to promote connections and community between students\, faculty\, and local professionals. Over the past 8 months the club has tripled its student membership compared to the previous year and grown professional connections in the community. SUMMARY:ITE Canada: Northern Alberta Section The Genesis of Terwillegar Drive Stage 1 – Freeway to Expressway
DESCRIPTION:Since 2001 the City of Edmonton has been exploring options for the upgrade of Terwillegar Drive between Anthony Henday Drive and Whitemud Drive to accommodate evolving traffic demands along the corridor. In 2018\, the original vision of a six-lane freeway complete with interchanges was recognized to incorporate several elements that were no longer consistent with the city’s transportation goals and an alternative strategy to meet current design standards\, economic constraints and the wants and needs of adjacent communities was developed. Our presentation provides some insight on the genesis of the expressway concept\, the extensive public engagement process undertaken by the project team and details some of the challenges and outcomes experienced through the planning\, design and implementation of the expressway corridor that is currently being constructed. \nDate: May 3\nRegistration & Social: 11:40 AM – 12:00 PM (MDT)\nLuncheon & Presentation: 12:00 – 1:00 PM (MDT)\nLocation: Faculty Club at the University of Alberta\, Winspear Room\, 11435 Saskatchewan Drive\, Edmonton\, Alberta\, T6G 2G9\nCost: $35.00 ITE Member / $40 Non-ITE Member / $50 Late Registration (within 24 hours of event start) \nAbout the Presenters\n  \n \nBrad Crossland a Professional Engineer with Al-Terra Engineering\, has almost 20 years of experience in the planning\, design\, management and delivery of urban transportation projects in the Greater Edmonton area. SUMMARY:ITE Canada Northern Alberta Section: Mind the (gender) Data Gap: Public Transit Needs of Canadian Women
DESCRIPTION:Gender has recently been emphasized as an issue to be featured on the agenda of sustainable\nand inclusive public transit planning practices. But\, this knowledge mobilization study led by the University of Alberta researchers revealed that transport planning and design have paid little\nattention to gender. This can be attributed to a lack of gender-specific data\, gender-neutral\nplanning practices\, and a lack of gender representation in the public transit workforce at all\nlevels (from transit operators to senior leadership). \nWith an absence of data collection practices designed to capture gender differences in public transit use and travel demand\, little gender- specific insight can be generated. This is problematic as data are applied in several aspects of transit planning\, such as developing service standards\, fare policies\, and business cases for major public transit projects. This presentation will focus on Canada’s gender data gap\, specific to public transit but also more broadly related to transportation data collection practices\, and its implications on transit planning\, operations\, and resource allocation. Lastly\, action to be taken to close the gender data gap and build an evidence basis of how women use public transit will be discussed with emphasis placed on how we can put women at the heart of future public transit strategies. \nPlease note\, this event takes place on a Thursday. \nDate: Thursday\, April 13\nRegistration & Social: 11:40 AM – 12:00 PM (MDT)\nLuncheon & Presentation: 12:00 – 1:00  PM (MDT) \nLocation: Faculty Club at the University of Alberta\, Winspear Room\, 11435 Saskatchewan Drive\, Edmonton\, Alberta\, T6G 2G9 \nAbout the Presenter\nDr. Emily Grisé is a forward-thinking transport researcher with specializations in the areas of transport & land use planning\, customer satisfaction & loyalty with public transport\, pedestrian & bicycle planning\, travel behaviour of disadvantaged populations (seniors and people with disabilities)\, and public transport planning & operations. She is an Assistant Professor in the School of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Alberta and her work focuses on collaboration with several local and regional transport agencies to directly address issues of concern to key stakeholders. She is also frequently engaged in providing transport expertise in the private sector. The underlying goal of her research is to develop effective policies that contribute to a more livable and sustainable society. \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:ITE Southern Alberta Seasonal Patio Program
DESCRIPTION:Seasonal Patio Program\nPrior to 2020\, there were a half dozen restaurants in Calgary that built boardwalks and street patios during the summer months. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit\, and indoor dining was limited\, over 200 restaurants built expanded seasonal patios. Many restaurants communicated the seasonal patios provided a benefit to their business and to the vibrancy of the street\, and seasonal patios would be welcomed “post-pandemic”. The design\, safety and accessibility of seasonal patios has evolved from orange cones\, to boardwalk platforms with integrated public art and greenery. In this talk\, Andrew Sedor (Mobility Initiatives Lead for The City of Calgary) will discuss the history of the program\, and what to expect for the 2023 seasonal patio program. \n  \nAbout the Presenter:\nAndrew Sedor works as the Mobility Initiatives Lead at The City of Calgary. Andrew leads the shared e-Scooter and e-Bike program\, the seasonal patio program\, and other innovate projects occurring in The City’s road right of way. In his prior roles\, he led Canada’s first public-facing autonomous vehicle pilot\, authored Calgary’s Future of Transportation Report\, updated bylaws to accommodate new transportation technologies and trends\, launched The City of Calgary’s Living Lab program\, and led the University of Calgary Wearable’s collaboration. Andrew also teaches a course in Urban Planning at the University of Calgary\, and holds a master’s degree in Land Economics from the University of Cambridge.

SUMMARY:Hamilton Complete Streets Design Manual (2022 Project of the Year)
DESCRIPTION:The winner of the 2022 ITE Toronto Project of the Year Award is the ‘Hamilton Complete Streets Design Manual’ by the City of Hamilton and WSP. Join us on Wednesday\, February 22 from 3:30-5:00pm at WSP’s Thornhill Office to learn about this project from Trevor Jenkins (City of Hamilton) and James Schofield (WSP). \nThe Hamilton Complete Streets Design Manual\, unanimously endorsed by City Council in July 2022\, provides a set of consistent guidelines and tools to inform the design\, implementation\, maintenance\, and monitoring of Complete-Livable-Better (CLB) Streets across the city. The Complete Streets Design Manual provides an expanded toolbox of ways to improve Hamilton’s streets. \nThe Complete Streets Design Manual is more than just another set of guidelines – it is a transformative exercise that overhauls the entirety of Hamilton’s street design standards\, from the reconstruction of the narrow pre-war downtown streets to new arterial streets in employment areas to rural roads throughout the Greenbelt. Through this presentation\, we invite you to discover how the project is creating multi-modal\, greener\, and safer streets that will connect a geographically and socio-economically diverse community and\, in doing so\, serves to create a more equitable transportation system. \nComplete Streets are defined as roadways that are planned and designed to balance the needs of all road users. The goal of Complete Streets is to allow people to get around safely no matter their age\, ability\, or how they choose to move. The Complete Streets concept is closely tied to the Safe Systems and Vision Zero approaches to road safety\, which aim to design the transportation system to anticipate human error and accommodate human injury tolerance with the ultimate goal of eliminating death or serious injury on roadways. \nThis manual is a resource for everyone involved in the planning\, design\, or maintenance of Hamilton’s roadways\, including local residents who support safer streets. Guidance for street design\, intersection design\, implementation\, and general design components is covered in this manual to ensure users and practitioners are well equipped to understand and apply the principles of Complete Streets. \nSpeakers\n \nTrevor Jenkins\, P.Eng.\, PTP is a Project Manager at the City of Hamilton. He manages initiatives that advance the City’s sustainable mobility ambitions\, including long-range active and rapid transit planning\, micromobility\, and active school travel programs. You can find him exploring Hamilton in his downtime\, usually on a bike share bike.\n \n  \n  \n  \n  \nJames Schofield\, P.Eng.\, RSP₁ is a Project Manager at WSP specializing in complete streets and active transportation planning and design. He led the development of the City of Hamilton’s Complete Streets Design Manual and is also leading Complete Streets Design Manual projects for Niagara Region and the City of Guelph. A Professional Engineer and a Candidate Member of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute\, James is based in Kingston where he can be found riding a cargo bike around with his two young kids.

SUMMARY:Bridges Over Troubled Water The BC Flood Recovery and Highway 5 Re-opening
DESCRIPTION:Presentation Summary \nThe extreme rainfall events in November 2021 had major impacts on highways and highway structures throughout southern British Columbia.  The events caused closures on Highway 1\, Highway 3\, Highway 5 (Merritt to Hope)\, and Highway 99 (30 km west of Lillooet)\, and many other BC highways.  Of note\, the closures of these major highways temporarily cut off land access between the Lower Mainland from the rest of Canada\, which led to various supply chain interruptions and severed access to communities.  With over 20 damaged locations on Highway 5\, the BC MOTI\, professional engineering communities\, and local Road Builders worked tirelessly to repair them with an aim to reopen Highway 5 as soon as possible.  In the end\, Highway 5 was successfully reopened to essential and commercial traffic on December 21\, 2021\, just a month after the extreme rainfall events.  This presentation is focused on the traffic management designs to reopen Highway 5 and the lessons learned. \nPresenter: Jonathan Ho\, P.Eng.\, PTOE – MOT Design Lead with Kiewit \nAbout the Presenter \nJonathan Ho is a Transportation Engineer with over 15 years of consulting engineering experience.  He is currently the MOT Design Lead with Peter Kiewit Sons ULC\, where he is working on the Trans Mountain Expansion Project’s Spread 5B and the Highway 5 Repair Project.  His past traffic management experience included the Broadway Subway Extension\, FortisBC LMIPSU Project\, and Canada Line.\n\nJoin Virtual Event:\nhttps://youtu.be/ocIGgXxnlOc\n

SUMMARY:NCS CITE March Luncheon Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Presentation Description \nThe City of Ottawa approved its first Climate Change Master Plan in 2020.  The plan includes targets of reducing carbon emissions from City operations by 50% by 2030\, and 100% by 2040.  With the operation of transit buses being a significant contributor to the City’s carbon emissions\, the Transit Service Department initiated the Bus Alternative Energy Systems (BAES) Project.  Completed with the assistance of transit operations\, energy\, and greenhouse gas specialists from Dillon Consulting Limited\, the BAES Project included an assessment of potential bus propulsion technologies\, selection of a preferred propulsion technology\, and development of an implementation plan that considered not only the buses\, but the necessary transit garage infrastructure\, off-site infrastructure\, and staffing implications.  The outcomes of the BAES Project have allowed the City of Ottawa to effectively plan for the coming technology changes and be better informed as negotiations and applications for supporting funding are made.  This presentation will describe the key activities and outcomes of the BAES Project and discuss current and future actions that the City is undertaking as it moves forward with zero emission electric bus propulsion technology. \nThe Presenters \nAlex Stecky-Efantis\, B.Sc.\, M.Pl.\, MCIP\, RPP \nAlex is a transportation planner with over 10 years of experience in the public transit and aviation industries.
