The proliferation of personal electric mobility and the shift in designing to accommodate cyclists of all ages and abilities has had a profound impact on our City’s mobility system. London had an excellent foundation to build upon\, the City’s beloved pathway system (the Thames Valley Parkway)\, and has continued to expand its protected cycling network starting in its core. \nThis tour will take participants on a journey to experience some of the newest and most-loved parts of London’s cycling network. We’ll ride on multi-use pathways\, protected bike lanes\, cycle tracks\, quiet streets and a flex street. We’ll get to see sections of BRT that are completed and under construction\, a variety of intersection treatments\, a multi-use path rail crossing\, and experience some of the up-and-coming neighbourhoods and development within London. Not to mention lots of time along the beautiful Thames River. \nTour Lead: \n \nDaniel Hall is a transportation planner/ engineer focused on implementing cycling and walking infrastructure improvements in the City of London. With a background in transit planning and cycling advocacy\, and as a committed cyclist\, he brings many perspectives to his design and planning efforts. He’s currently planning a bike trip to Ottawa for the end of August. \nA long-time resident of London\, Daniel and his wife Jess have two children aged 9 and 11. As a goal\, Daniel aspires to create a transportation network for London that allows for comfortable and convenient travel by all abilities and by all modes of travel and helps to develop a city where he doesn’t have to drive his kids to their friend’s houses or their first job.

DESCRIPTION:Come tour the newest section of the Finch Hydro Corridor Multi-use Path with the City of Toronto’s Project Manager. The tour will start at the southeast corner of Birchmount Road Silver Springs Boulevard near the bike share station. It is accessible via transit or parking is available at the near by L’Amoreaux Park. The event starts at 2 pm with registration\, social networking\, bike rental assistance (for those renting)\, and safety announcement followed by the bike tour. The tour will go through L’Amoreaux Park up to the Hydro Trail starting at Birchmount Road and continue along the trail to Pharmacy Avenue\, then returning in a loop back to L’Amoreaux Park. During the ride\, Matthew will discuss the design and development of this section of the Hydro Corrido. As the city’s second busiest transit corridor\, with almost 20% of Calgary’s population living within 1km\, existing Bus Route 23 travels through 24 communities and connects major destinations while linking to existing and future MAX BRT and LRT routes. This bus route carries over 10\,000 daily riders\, but its 90 minute peak end to end travel time highlights inequities for north corridor communities\, many of whom rely on low income transit passes for mobility according to The City’s equity index. A functional study is being completed\, which recommends introducing a MAX BRT service on 52 Street E\, with strategic stops\, bus only lanes\, transit signal priority\, improved walking/wheeling access\, and enhanced station amenities. This will provide a more reliable\, convenient\, and comfortable transit service\, all adding to its attractiveness. It also proposes a MAX Teal extension from Douglas Glen station to 52 Street E\, upgrades at Saddletowne LRT station\, and a new southern terminal in Seton\, ahead of the Green Line extension. These improvements aim to enhance access\, support economic growth\, and provide more equitable transit options for East Calgary. \nPresenters\n \nAasha Williams-Blanco – Transit and Rail Team Lead (Alberta)\, Stantec \nWith more than 15 years in mass transit planning\, design coordination\, and major infrastructure\, Aasha brings a strong technical foundation in bus rapid transit (BRT) and light rail transit (LRT) project delivery. She has contributed to some of Calgary’s significant transit initiatives including the 52 Street East Max BRT\, Green Line LRT\, and the MAX Yellow BRT. Aasha has managed and coordinated key components of large transit programs—ranging from technical coordination to property acquisition and quantity estimating\, to alignment evaluation and life-cycle cost analysis. She is known for her people-first leadership style. She invests deeply in mentorship\, team development\, and creating environments where others can grow. When not at work\, Aasha thrives on staying active with her family and is intentional about fostering community with people she holds dear to her heart. She also loves to read\, or you’ll find her cheering from the sidelines at her kids’ hockey and soccer games. \nNusrat Jehanara – Transportation Engineer\, City of Calgary \nNusrat is a transportation engineer with the Transit Project Development team. She has over 15 years of private and public sector experience.  She started her career in rural highway design\, then moved to urban street design. DESCRIPTION:Date:  Wednesday\, September 16\, 2026 \nTime:  12:00 – 4:00 pm ET / 9:00 am – 1:00 pm PT \nLocation: Virtual. \nThis session will qualify for PDH credits for attendees.\n \nUrban streets are more than conduits for traffic—they are complex environments that support movement and serve as vibrant places for community connection and economic activity. Designing these streets requires balancing safety\, mobility\, and livability while accommodating diverse users such as pedestrians\, cyclists\, transit riders\, and goods movement. \nIn the past decade\, there has been considerable evolution in design practices for Canadian urban streets by shifting away from minimum design standards towards a more nuanced\, context-specific “design domain” approach. This evolution requires practitioners to apply greater engineering judgment and consider a broader range of factors and user perspectives. \nThis training equips participants with the knowledge and tools to navigate this evolving landscape with live facilitators that offer a variety of experience in planning and designing for complex urban environments\, including complete streets and protected intersections. A mix of presentations\, case studies\, interactive exercises\, and question and answer periods will be incorporated to allow attendees to apply fundamental design principles for urban streets\, navigate design trade-offs\, and incorporate emerging solutions. \nThis training will be organized as follows: \n\nIntroduction to Urban Street Design: The session will begin by examining the functions of urban streets for varying users and their role in supporting access\, mobility\, and placemaking. We will introduce the design domain approach\, contrasting it with traditional minimum standards and emphasizing the role of engineering judgment. We will then shift to concepts related to design controls and emerging solutions for speed management\, including self-enforcing streets\, highlighting how geometric design influences user behaviour and safety through Exercise #1.\nUrban Street Cross-sections: Next\, we will examine key urban street elements and how to select appropriate widths within the design domain and make trade-offs for varying contexts and user needs. Participants will then apply these concepts in Exercise #2 using real-world case studies and interactive tools that will challenge them to redesign urban streets to meet specified priorities within constrained rights-of-way and understand the equity implications of design decisions. \nHorizontal and Vertical Alignment for Urban Streets: This part of the training will explore fundamental concepts on horizontal and vertical alignments of urban streets and strategies to incorporate considerations for drainage\, safety\, and sight distances. Real-world case studies will be used to illustrate the connections between design controls and speed management to horizontal and vertical alignment design choices.\nUrban Intersection Design: The final block will focus on key principles of urban intersection design\, including control types\, user safety considerations\, and design/control vehicle selection. We will also provide a high-level overview of emerging concepts like protected intersections and multimodal roundabouts. To reinforce learning\, case studies will be presented to demonstrate the intersection geometric design concepts in application. This training program is designed for beginner to intermediate transportation professionals\, which may include transportation planners\, technologists\, engineers\, landscape architects\, and others involved in the planning\, design\, and operation of urban streets.  \nFACILITATORS\nShawn Smith\, P.Eng.\, PMP\, RSP1\nLead Trainer \nShawn Smith is a civil and transportation engineer with 23+ years of experience delivering active transportation\, complete streets\, and road safety initiatives across the public and private sectors. His work spans design guidelines\, master plans\, feasibility studies\, environmental assessments\, and preliminary to detailed design. Previously at York Region\, Shawn led development of key walking and cycling networks\, including the VIVA bikeways and the Lake-to-Lake Cycling Route and Walking Trail. He has since supported municipalities across Canada through planning and design projects\, including the award-winning Clark Avenue complete street in the City of Vaughan. Shawn co-authored the update to Ontario Traffic Manual Book 18: Cycling Facilities and has delivered in-person and virtual workshops to more than 600 professionals. He serves on the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals (APBP) Board of Directors and was named Share the Road Cycling Coalition’s 2018 Wheels of Change Professional of the Year. He is also the author of Happy Trails: Biking and Hiking Adventures in the Greater Toronto Area and contributes to the profession through presentations and volunteer leadership. \nSantiago Londono\, P.Eng.\, PMP\nLead Trainer \nSantiago holds an Ontario College Advanced Diploma and a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering\, bringing over 10 years of experience in construction and municipal infrastructure projects. He has led the preliminary and detailed design of local\, collector\, and arterial road reconstruction projects\, with expertise in road geometry\, widening and narrowing strategies\, and sightline analysis. This evolution requires practitioners to apply greater engineering judgment and consider a broader range of factors and user perspectives. \nThis training equips participants with the knowledge and tools to navigate this evolving landscape with live facilitators that offer a variety of experience in planning and designing for complex urban environments\, including complete streets and protected intersections. A mix of presentations\, case studies\, interactive exercises\, and question and answer periods will be incorporated to allow attendees to apply fundamental design principles for urban streets\, navigate design trade-offs\, and incorporate emerging solutions. \nThis training will be organized as follows: \n\nIntroduction to Urban Street Design: The session will begin by examining the functions of urban streets for varying users and their role in supporting access\, mobility\, and placemaking. We will then shift to concepts related to design controls and emerging solutions for speed management\, including self-enforcing streets\, highlighting how geometric design influences user behaviour and safety through Exercise #1.\nUrban Street Cross-sections: Next\, we will examine key urban street elements and how to select appropriate widths within the design domain and make trade-offs for varying contexts and user needs. Participants will then apply these concepts in Exercise #2 using real-world case studies and interactive tools that will challenge them to redesign urban streets to meet specified priorities within constrained rights-of-way and understand the equity implications of design decisions. \nHorizontal and Vertical Alignment for Urban Streets: This part of the training will explore fundamental concepts on horizontal and vertical alignments of urban streets and strategies to incorporate considerations for drainage\, safety\, and sight distances.
