SUMMARY:ITE Greater Vancouver: Virtual Seminar - Planning for the Crowd: Traffic Management for Burnaby's Special Events – October 2026
DESCRIPTION:ITE Greater Vancouver Section is pleased to have the City of Burnaby and ISL Engineering and Land Services present their work on Traffic Management for Burnaby’s Special Events on October 15th\, 2026\, at 11:00 AM PT. The virtual seminar will be free and online. \nThe City of Burnaby hosts several high-profile events each year that require closing busy arterials and collectors\, many of them transit and truck routes. These range from Hats Off Day\, a community festival\, and Canada Day celebrations that drew over 65\,000 attendees\, to Car Free Day with TransLink\, Halloween fireworks\, and the Remembrance Day parade and ceremony in South Burnaby\, a small event with its own operational complexity. These events help create a vibrant\, sustainable\, inclusive and livable community\, in line with the City’s Strategic Plan goals. \nThis presentation reframes special events as temporary work zones. The duration\, risk profile and public behaviour differ from a construction zone\, but the planning rigour required is comparable or greater\, as is the coordination needed across event organizers and City departments. Drawing on a few Burnaby case studies\, the City and ISL Engineering and Land Services will cover traffic management plan development\, safety treatment selection\, the day-of execution model\, and the debrief practices that carry lessons into the following year — with practical takeaways for municipalities planning events on their own roads. \nSpeakers: \nMartin To\, P.Eng. — Transportation Engineer | City of Burnaby \nAlvin Tse\, P.Eng.\, RSP1 — Road Safety Lead | ISL Engineering and Land Services \nDate: October 15\, 2026 \nTime: 11:00 AM PT \nLocation: Virtual\n\nJoin Virtual Event:\nhttps://teams.microsoft.com/meet/269121818976088?p=BAjxnn23CVy0StPckh\n

SUMMARY:ITE National Capital Section Fall Luncheon - Oct 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Fall Luncheon on October 23 at 11 am for two amazing presentations regarding transportation work in our city. \nDATE: Friday\, October 23\, 2026 \nTIME: 11:00 am – 1:30 pm \nLOCATION: Sala San Marco\, 215 Preston Street\, Ottawa\, ON \nREGISTRATION: Ticket sales close Monday\, October 19 at 11:30 pm \nPRESENTATIONS\nTransportation Impact Assessment Guidelines \nThe City of Ottawa (Emmett Proulx) will present a summary of Transportation Impact Assessment fundamentals\, provide an overview of the new 2026 TIA Guidelines\, and discuss major changes included in the update. Emmett is a professional engineer and Program Manager with the City of Ottawa’s Transportation Planning Service. Emmett currently leads the Neighbourhood Traffic Calming branch\, which includes programs in neighbourhood traffic calming\, integrated renewal planning\, transportation demand management\, and mores. Previously\, Emmett was part of a team responsible for reviewing transportation impact assessments and roadway improvements for development applications. Emmett led the development of the 2021 Protected Intersection Design Guide and the 2026 update to the City of Ottawa’s Transportation Impact Assessment Guidelines.”\n\n\nSussex and King Edward Functional Design – Balancing Priorities on Ottawa’s Confederation Boulevard \nSussex Drive forms part of the National Capital Region’s Confederation Boulevard Corridor\, which connects the Ottawa and Gatineau Downtown areas and provides access to many of Canada’s important institutions in the National Capital Region. The intersection of Sussex Drive with King Edward Avenue in Ottawa represents a critical node for multimodal transportation\, serving high volumes of vehicular\, pedestrian\, and cycling traffic\, and providing access to key federal properties including the National Research Council\, Global Affairs in the Lester B. Pearson Building\, as well as an interprovincial connection to Quebec via the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge. This intersection has a history of operational and safety concerns; and was identified as a candidate for improvements in the City of Ottawa’s 2020 Cycling Safety Review of High-Volume Intersections Study. \nThe City of Ottawa\, in collaboration with Robinson Consultants\, undertook a functional design study to assess alternatives for potential improvements to the intersection. The project included the development of a number of operational and design alternatives including geometric and signal timing modifications integrating elements of the City of Ottawa’s protected intersection design guidelines. Specific challenges included maintaining vehicle capacity for a heavily used connection through the intersection and downstream weave towards the interprovincial MacDonald-Cartier Bridge to Gatineau\, the limited width of the bridge on the southbound intersection approach over the Rideau River\, maintaining access to adjacent government of Canada employment nodes\, and coordination with ongoing construction at the adjacent Lester B. Pearson Building. \nDevelopment of the alternatives was based on a geometric and operational review\, as well as the application of the City of Ottawa’s MMLOS Guidelines. The preferred design option is a protected intersection that incorporates bidirectional and unidirectional crossrides\, smart-channel right turns with raised active transportation crossings\, curb extensions thereby narrowing active transportation crossings\, and concrete centreline hardening to reduce turning radii and vehicle speeds. The intersection concept was designed for future conversion of the westbound right turn from permissive to fully protected operation as warranted by future traffic volumes as well as a future bi-directional cycling facility on the west side of the roadway proposed by the National Capital Commission. \nThe presentation of this case study will outline the development and evaluation of the intersection design alternatives\, responding to the unique geometric and capacity constraints and standards governing development in the area with having the ultimate goal of balancing the high-volume traffic movements with improved safety for pedestrians and cyclists through the application of the City of Ottawa’s new Protected Intersection Design Guidelines. \nAdam Howell is a Senior Project Manager in Robinson Consultants’ Transportation Planning Team with more than 17 years of experience in transportation planning and traffic engineering assignments. Adam’s experience includes traffic analysis supporting large scale infrastructure projects including the Ottawa Confederation Line LRT and numerous MTO Bridge Structural rehabilitation projects along Highways 401\, 416 and 417 in eastern Ontario\, as well as traffic engineering and design for municipal road and intersection improvements and traffic impact studies for private developments.

Guided by a proactive\, risk-based approach\, the City is working to identify and address safety concerns before serious collisions occur while prioritizing the protection of vulnerable road users. \nGrounded in data and informed by community partnerships\, Guelph’s Vision Zero program is helping shift the conversation from individual responsibility to a shared responsibility for creating safer streets. Through research\, evidence-based decision-making\, public engagement\, and continuous learning\, the City is fostering a culture where road safety is embedded in everyday decisions and where the goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries is both ambitious and achievable. \nProfessional Development Hours (PDH):\nAll attendees will receive 1.5 hours of PDH. \nITE Southwestern Ontario AGM Sponsorship:\nFor the first time\, ITE Southwestern Ontario is offering a limited number of event sponsorship opportunities for our Annual General Meeting. \n\nThis sponsorship program provides organizations (i.e.\, consulting firms) with the opportunity to support the local transportation community while increasing their visibility among transportation professionals\, students\, and industry leaders from across Southwestern Ontario. \nAGM Sponsor Package – $500\nThe AGM Sponsor Package includes: \n\nTwo (2) AGM tickets/registrations\nRecognition in AGM promotional materials and event communications (where and if possible)\nRecognition during the AGM program\nPermission to display one pull-up banner at the event venue\nA post-event acknowledgment on the ITE Southwestern Ontario LinkedIn page\n1.5 Professional Development Hours (PDH) for each attendee.\n\nAvailability\nTo maintain an exclusive sponsorship opportunity\, only two sponsorships will initially be offered. \nRegistration Requirements\n\nOrganizations purchasing a sponsorship package will be required to provide the names of their two attendees at the time of registration. \n\n\nTicket Prices:\n\n$30 – Post Secondary Student\n$65 – Active ITE Member\n$85 – Non-Member\, Non-Student\n$500 – Corporate Sponsor (includes 2 tickets)\n\nWe can’t wait to see you there!
