SUMMARY:ITE Southern Alberta: Transportation Management of Emergencies in Northern Alberta (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Transportation Management of Emergencies in Northern Alberta \nThe Peace Region has experienced either wildfires or floods every year since 2014. Each year\, it is a matter of when the emergency will strike\, not if. Part of Mae’s work as the Operations Manager includes managing highway closures and evacuation routes during such emergencies. In this presentation\, Mae is going to highlight the importance of networking and planning in advance of a disaster\, as well as regular training and communication. \nProper traffic accommodation is essential to protect both local communities and other road users. Mae will review what was done here in Alberta to aid the thousands of evacuees from the Northwest Territories and how sometimes a small gesture can make a huge difference! \nPresenter: Mae Stewart\, P.Eng \nMae has spent her entire career as a civil engineer in the public service\, working for municipal\, federal and now provincial governments. She has spent the last 16 years working for Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (TEC) in Peace River. As the Operations Manager\, Mae oversees the delivery of departmental programs on Alberta’s highway network\, First Nation and Metis Settlement road infrastructure\, park and urban access roads\, and ferries and ice bridges. She is responsible for the delivery of multi-million dollar highway maintenance contracts and provides leadership to a team of engineers and technologists. Mae has been involved in several innovative projects such as the design and construction of a carcass compost\, the construction and maintenance of an bridge across an 800m wide river\, and the creation of a five year strategic people plan to build an engaged and resilient workplace culture. \n \n\nJoin Virtual Event:\nhttps://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3ameeting_OGY1Mzg2ZTUtMGMzMS00MjJiLWIyYTUtMDU4YjkxMGYzYmZm%40thread.v2/0?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%22875688ea-8b21-4b98-b25b-4b81851ad72d%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%224a3ba1e2-3eaf-46fd-a2aa-5dc1b59160ca%22%7d\n

SUMMARY:ITE Toronto Section: A Webinar with Jarrett Walker
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the revised edition of Jarrett Walker’s influential book Human Transit\, Revised Edition: How Clearer Thinking about Public Transit Can Enrich Our Communities and Our Lives. The new edition deepens its explanations about the basic principles of public transit\, informed by his work as a network planning consultant. New topics include the problem with specialization; the role of flexible or “demand response” services; how to know when to redesign your network; and responding to tech-industry claims that transit will soon be obsolete.  Finally\, he added a major new section exploring the idea of access to opportunity as a core measure of transit’s success. \n\nSpeaker: \n  \nJarrett Walker\, PhD\, is an international consultant in public transit network design and policy. He has been a full-time consultant since 1991 and has led numerous major planning projects in North America\, Australia\, and New Zealand. He is Founder and Principal Consultant at Jarrett Walker + Associates\, based in Portland\, Oregon. \nHe is the author of the popular public transit blog HumanTransit.org\, and the book Human Transit: How Clearer Thinking about Public Transit Can Enrich Our Communities and Our Lives (Island Press\, 2011). This book is a friendly\, non-technical introduction to transit’s underlying geometry\, and the real value judgments that must be explored to make both transit and development policy. His background integrates an arts and humanities PhD (Stanford\, 1996) with long technical experience in all aspects of transit and its role in city-building. He is a frequent keynote speaker\, teacher\, and facilitator of decision-making processes. \n  \n \n \n\nJoin Virtual Event:\nhttps://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3ameeting_Mjk2Mjg3NjEtY2ZiOS00MmY4LWI4NzMtN2QxZTNhMmM1ZmVh%40thread.v2/0?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%22875688ea-8b21-4b98-b25b-4b81851ad72d%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%224a3ba1e2-3eaf-46fd-a2aa-5dc1b59160ca%22%7d\n

SUMMARY:ITE Southwestern Ontario: First Annual Trail Ride
DESCRIPTION:Hi Everyone! \nCome join us for our first annual trail ride!  SW Ontario has many great rural cycling links between our communities\, so what better way to learn about them than to ride them? \nThis year we will begin and end at Rural Roots Brewing Company in Elmira.  We’ll meet at 10:45am in their parking lot\, then ride about 1 km through town to the G2G trail\, where we’ll travel about 5 km east to West Montrose.  There we will check out the covered bridge (aka the Kissing Bridge) which was built in 1881 and is listed on Canada’s Register of Historic Places.  Please make sure to wear and ride with appropriate gear\, this is best with a standard bike (not racer tires). \nIndividual registration is required but there’s no charge to participate and no limit on the number of participants\, so come on out and bring a colleague or friend! \nWe can’t wait to see you there! \nPlease note: \n\nIt’s not overly challenging\, this is meant to be a leisurely ride\, but please be aware of your abilities;\nThere will be a gravel surface\, some traffic interaction\, and some grades;\nEach participant should have their own bike\, but we may be able to line up a spare or two in case someone doesn’t have one; and\nThere is limited parking available there\, so carpooling might be the best option for anyone who arrives from outside the area.\n\nDetails: \nPrice: FREE!   ITE Southwestern Ontario: First Annual Trail Ride – ITE Canada \nDate: Saturday September 28\, 2024 \nEquipment: \n\nA bicycle with regular tires (mixed surfaces\, asphalt and gravel)\nAn adult helmet (suggested)\nWater\, bug spray\, sunscreen (suggested)\n\nSchedule: \n\nMeeting Time:    10:45 AM\nBike Ride to West Montrose (return)        11:00 – 12:00 noon (approximate)\nSocial time at Rural Roots Brewing Co to follow the ride.\n\nParking space is somewhat limited so carpooling is encouraged for anyone driving to the site.  Please contact JJongsma@London.ca to discuss carpooling options.

SUMMARY:ITE Canada & CARSP Joint Webinar: Design Guide for Bus Stops Adjacent to Cycling Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This webinar is now at capacity.  \nTransLink\, in partnership with the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI)\, recently retained Urban Systems to create the Design Guide for Bus Stops Adjacent to Cycling Infrastructure (download here\, PDF 14.8 MB) to provide province-wide guidance to develop “island platform bus stops” or “floating bus stops” in British Columbia.  The Design Guide provides a comprehensive set of planning and engineering guidelines offering solutions for the planning\, design\, operation\, and maintenance of bus stops adjacent to protected cycling infrastructure in a range of contexts and applications throughout British Columbia\, along with guidance for education and engagement. This Design Guide is the first of its kind in North America and addresses a significant gap in knowledge on how to design bus stops to meet the needs of people with disabilities while also being comfortable for cyclists of all ages and abilities. The Design Guide was developed with extensive stakeholder engagement\, including pilot projects in five municipalities in British Columbia. The Design Guide was awarded both the ITE Canada Stan Teply Outstanding Technical Project Award and the ITE International Transportation Achievement Award – Planning Award in 2024. \nThis virtual session will provide an overview of the Design Guide as well as lessons learned from municipal staff from two case study communities. \nRegistration for this webinar is FREE for current ITE and CARSP members. Non-members are welcome to purchase a ticket. \nPresenters\nBrian Patterson\, RPP\, MCIP\, PMP\, RSP1 \nSenior Planner\, Urban Systems \n \nBrian is a senior transportation and brings over 20 years of experience in active transportation planning and design\, multi-modal transportation planning\, and safety and accessibility. Brian has developed over hundreds of plans\, designs\, and studies for communities of all sizes across Canada and has been recognized with numerous industry awards. Brian led the development of the Design Guide for Bus Stops Adajcent to Cycling Infrastructure and has led numerous other design guides\, including the BC Active Transportation Design Guide. \n  \nSuzanne Therrien\, MPH \nActive Transportation Planner\, City of Kelowna \n\nSuzanne is an Active Transportation Planner at the City of Kelowna. Her work focuses on programs\, resources and partnerships to promote more trips by active modes. She holds a Master degree in Public Health with specialty in population health and has over decade experience in active transportation research. \n  \n  \n  \nMo Bot\, RPP\, PMP \nProject Manager\, Public Realm Infrastructure\, City of North Vancouver \n\nMo is a collaboratively-minded project manager specializing in multimodal transportation policy development\, infrastructure design and construction. Mo has worked across Canada on everything from big city major transit projects to site specific high impact public realm and active mobility improvements. They are always keen to hear all perspectives and strive to support physical and social spaces where learning and justice are centred.
