The training will draw on forward-thinking design guidance and real-world case studies from around North America and internationally to help participants build an understanding of different approaches to key design issues and trade-offs. Participants will learn to think creatively and outside-the-box in how they tackle practical design issues that municipalities encounter every day. \nThrough this training\, participants will: \n\nBecome familiar and comfortable with protected intersection design principles and how they change with the local context;\nProvide an awareness of guidance available regionally\, nationally\, and internationally to supplement and advance design;\nUse interactive group design exercises to allow participants to gain experience using protected intersection design principles to achieve a better active transportation network\n\nThe training sessions will be structured to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of protected intersection design. This can be answered\, in part\, by asking “who is transit for?” \nIn this talk\, Filip Majcherkiewicz (Team Lead of Service Planning\, Calgary Transit) will discuss how the degree to which coverage or ridership is prioritized can influence network design and overall service quality outcomes. \nBiography\n \n  \nFilip Majcherkiewicz is a Registered Professional Planner specializing in transit planning. He earned a Master of Planning degree at the University of Waterloo where his research focused on the land use impacts of Calgary’s LRT system. He joined Calgary Transit’s Service Planning division in 2014\, a team he now leads. Filip has led numerous transit service plans\, notably the launch of the MAX Bus Rapid Transit lines in 2018-19. This month we will be featuring THREE presentations\, all from the University of Calgary: \nPresentation #1: Use of Crowd Source Data in Transport Planning and Traffic Management_ Intro to MTRADA\nTravel time estimation is an essential element in transport planning and traffic management. The intervention of intelligent transportation systems\, sensors systems and remote sensing methodologies has enabled to estimate travel times in high accuracy. Most of the travel time estimation models in the literature are inductive in nature\, which require vehicle travel time observations for calibration. Obtaining vehicle travel time data is both a time consuming and costly process for a single link and it is impractical to collect this information for all the links across the road network. Hence\, there is a need for travel time estimation models that are low in cost and more robust. Use of crowdsourced data and vehicle tracking techniques has further enhanced the estimation algorithms with accuracy and efficiency where use of google travel time data extracted from Google Distance Matrix API is a novel approach to gather representative information about real-time traffic conditions. \nM-TRADA (https://uom.lk/civil/transportation/software/mtrada) is a Cloud Based data mining platform to collect travel time data using Google map APIs. It was developed in year 2017 by Transportation Engineering Division\, Department of Civil Engineering\, University of Moratuwa. M-TRADA has now been developed in to a fully functional\, verified cloud-based platform. \nThe workshop will cover the methodology to collect travel time data with Google Distance Matrix API using MTRADA nd use of the method in transport planning and traffic management applications. \nBiography\nDimantha De Silva is a Principal Consultant at CPCS. He is also a sessional lecturer at the University of Calgary. Prior to that he was a Senior Lecturer at Department of Civil Engineering at University of Moratuwa. He received his M.Sc. in Transportation Engineering and B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the University of Moratuwa\, Sri Lanka and completed his PhD in Transportation Engineering from University of Calgary\, Canada. How we allocate and design that space fundamentally influences the way a community looks\, feels and operates. No other aspect of engineering has such a critical role in shaping not just operational aspects of how people move\, but also the social\, economic and environmental outcomes for communities. While the practice of transportation engineering is evolving\, even today the tools and techniques used often result in poor outcomes for communities. While solving short-term vehicle transportation problems\, traditional methods can leave communities with long term congestion\, and safety and accessibility issues.  Canmore is unique only in it’s constraints\, and these constraints have forced the community to adopt integrated approaches sooner and more aggressively than most. \nThis tour will lead participants through a range of designs and show where a different set of priorities have been applied. Narrow traffic lanes\, windy roads\, wide paths\, separated bicycle facilities\, raised mid-block crossings\, continuous crossings\, and near-side traffic signals will be highlighted as emerging best-practice.  Benefits of the trade-offs between convenience while driving and place-making will be on display throughout\, including in areas where lanes have been narrowed\, turn bays have been removed\, and four-lane cross-sections have been converted to three-lane roads.  We will travel by bicycle on some of Canmore’s best and worst infrastructure to experience first-hand being placed in a variety of situations by designers.  It is hoped that through this short glimpse into different infrastructure types\, you’ll leave with a strong impression of the impacts that transportation designs can have on the way people travel\, and more importantly\, how community is created by roadway designs. Second\, an interchange at the infamous Highway 1A and Highway 22 intersection which includes widening the remaining section of Highway 1A to Highway 22. Two consulting firms have been heavily involved in the design and construction of these long-awaited projects. Urban Systems and ISL. \nUrban Systems is working with the Town of Cochrane and supported by Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (ATEC)\, to widen Highway 1A through the community\, adapting the plans developed by ISL\, and taking it through to construction with the support of Provincial grant funding. This widening has long awaited by the Town and dovetails into ATEC’s major upgrade at the Highway 1A and 22 interchange. \nJohn and Melissa will discuss the Highway 1A Improvements project and the unique features involved when delivering a multiple jurisdictional highway project. They will also cover Urban Systems’ involvement in the Highway 1A/Highway 22 Project enabling works\, the collaborative process employed and unique tasks involved the work. John and Melissa will expand on the out-of-the-box collaborative thinking that got the project off to a successful start for all parties. \nATEC with ISL\, have advanced the interchange construction of Highway 1A and Highway 22\, tying into the Highway 1A Improvements. He obtained a civil engineering technical diploma from SAIT Polytechnic prior to studying at the University of Calgary where he completed BSc. and MSc. degrees in civil engineering with a focus on road safety. While at the University of Calgary he resurrected the ITE Student Chapter and was President for two years. Following his studies\, he worked for a year at the SWOV Institute for Road Safety Research in The Netherlands on a wide array of projects before returning to Canada to continue his mobility safety engineering work. Tony was the initiator of the Traffic Calming Curb concept which was awarded the Transportation Association of Canada Road Safety Engineering Award in 2019 and he actively participates in TAC and the Canadian Association of Road Safety Professionals and is a Fellow of ITE. \nMarcia Eng\, P.Eng – Senior Transportation Engineer\, Urban Systems\nMarcia is a Senior Transportation Engineer and has over 23 years of diverse transportation planning and operations\, urban design and construction\, and project management experience. She has worked closely with clients in various municipalities throughout Alberta\, British Columbia and Manitoba to ensure safe and comfortable mobility options for people of all ages and abilities. She has developed a unique perspective of balancing competing needs through all phases of a project and between different roadway users. \nJohn Nugent\, P.Eng. – Corporate Practice Advisor\, APEGA\nAs a corporate practice advisor\, John conducts reviews on APEGA permit holders to ensure safe and competent practice in Alberta. John has 30+ years of experience as a professional engineer working in the oil and gas industry in Newfoundland and Labrador\, and Alberta\, as a structural engineer\, project engineer and manager\, and quality manager. He is a certified ISO 9001:2015 internal auditor\, completed the National Certified Investigator & Inspector Training basic and specialized programs\, and presents APEGA’s Permit to Practice seminar.
