SUMMARY:ITE Southern Alberta: July Luncheon – University of Calgary Presentations
DESCRIPTION:Date: July 11th\nTime: 11:30am-1pm\nLocation: Danish Canadian Club (727 11 Ave SW\, Calgary\, AB T2R 0E3)\nCost:\n$20 for Public Agency Members\n$35 for ITE members\n$40 for non-ITE members\n$15 for Student ITE Members\n($650 Sponsorship) \nJoin us for another luncheon presentation at the Canadian Danish Club! This month we will be featuring THREE presentations\, all from the University of Calgary: \nPresentation #1: Use of Crowd Source Data in Transport Planning and Traffic Management_ Intro to MTRADA\nTravel time estimation is an essential element in transport planning and traffic management. The intervention of intelligent transportation systems\, sensors systems and remote sensing methodologies has enabled to estimate travel times in high accuracy. Most of the travel time estimation models in the literature are inductive in nature\, which require vehicle travel time observations for calibration. Obtaining vehicle travel time data is both a time consuming and costly process for a single link and it is impractical to collect this information for all the links across the road network. Hence\, there is a need for travel time estimation models that are low in cost and more robust. Use of crowdsourced data and vehicle tracking techniques has further enhanced the estimation algorithms with accuracy and efficiency where use of google travel time data extracted from Google Distance Matrix API is a novel approach to gather representative information about real-time traffic conditions. \nM-TRADA (https://uom.lk/civil/transportation/software/mtrada) is a Cloud Based data mining platform to collect travel time data using Google map APIs. It was developed in year 2017 by Transportation Engineering Division\, Department of Civil Engineering\, University of Moratuwa. M-TRADA has now been developed in to a fully functional\, verified cloud-based platform. \nThe workshop will cover the methodology to collect travel time data with Google Distance Matrix API using MTRADA nd use of the method in transport planning and traffic management applications. \nBiography\nDimantha De Silva is a Principal Consultant at CPCS. He is also a sessional lecturer at the University of Calgary. Prior to that he was a Senior Lecturer at Department of Civil Engineering at University of Moratuwa. He received his M.Sc. in Transportation Engineering and B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the University of Moratuwa\, Sri Lanka and completed his PhD in Transportation Engineering from University of Calgary\, Canada. His research interests includes integrated land use transport demand modelling\, Big Data Analytics. \nPresentation #2: Designing Integrated Public Mobility in and Around University of Calgary\n(Description coming soon!) \nBiographies\nJoel Lethaby recently graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a Transportation Engineering minor. Joel now works for Associated Engineering as a Transportation Engineer-in-Training. Previously\, he completed a 16 month internship with Urban Systems where he was initially exposed to “complete street” style projects working on the Montgomery Main Streets Bowness Road project. This project sparked his passion for safe\, vibrant\, multi-modal streets\, and Joel hopes to work on more projects like this throughout his career. \nEremiahs Fikre is a recent Civil Engineering graduate. He is passionate about all things transportation engineering\, specifically traffic safety. During his undergraduate degree\, he completed an internship at the City of Edmonton with the Safe Mobility Team in which he helped with various initiatives for the Edmonton’s goal of Vision Zero by 2030. He hopes to continue making an impact in the transportation sector. \nKarim Kandil is a Transportation Engineer-in-Training with a strong background in software and technical expertise. Over the past two years at ISL\, Karim has played a role in the planning\, design\, and construction phases of significant urban transportation projects in Calgary and its surrounding areas\, such as the 26 Avenue SW Improvements and Downtown Flood Barrier. Driven by a passion for creating equitable and sustainable transportation networks\, Karim actively seeks innovative solutions that cater to the diverse needs of people of all abilities. Currently\, Karim is engaged in the development of a system that visualizes and analyzes transit performance throughout Calgary\, aiming to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of public transportation in the city. \nPresentation #3: Urban Calgary Student’s Association\nUrbanCSA works to promote connections and community between students\, faculty\, and local professionals. Over the past 8 months the club has tripled its student membership compared to the previous year and grown professional connections in the community. Our presentation highlights some of the major events and collaborations UrbanCSA has organized\, our plans for the upcoming year\, and how professional connects in the Calgary urban-industry vastly improves the post-secondary student experience. \nBiographies\nMax Webber is an Urban Studies student at the University of Calgary with a Minor in Architecture. He is an Executive VP for the Urban Calgary Students’ Association (UrbanCSA) and the Student Representative for Urban Studies within the Department of Geography. Max has spent the last year working with UrbanCSA to create a strong network connecting students and professionals\, and providing actual urban design opportunities for club members. He also works as the Director of Traffic and Development for the community of Southwood\, where he engages residents and addresses local concerns. \nSydney Ikeda just completed her third year in the Urban Studies program at the University of Calgary with a Minor in Economics. She works within the Urban Calgary Student Association as the VP of Marketing\, and is passionate about emphasizing the importance of peer relationships during university. Through UrbanCSA\, she has completed a creative engagement project alongside numerous professionals and students\, which was coined SketchMob. She values providing students and professionals of all backgrounds more information on urban design and city building. Currently\, she is working as a Growth Funding and Investment Summer Student with The City of Calgary\, where she analyzes funding sources for numerous projects that we enjoy on a daily basis.

SUMMARY:ITE Southern Alberta: Canmore Bike Tour
DESCRIPTION:Date\nSaturday\, September 16\, 2023 \nSchedule\n\n10:00 am Meet at parking lot\n10:00 am-12:00 pm – Bike tour\n12:00 pm – Lunch Buffet at Iron Goat Lodge: Bar and Grill\n\nNotes\nBikes will not be provided for the tour. Please either bring your own or rent. Bike rental discounts of 20% off regular price are being offered by Rundle Mountain Bike Rental (1-1743 Bow Valley Trail)\, where regular and electric bikes are available. Attendees can book their bikes online ahead of time (only credit card info is needed\, no payment)\, and during pickup/payment mention they are part of ITE Southern Alberta Section Canmore Bike Tour to receive this discount. \nLocation\n500 Benchlands Trail (Parking lot off of Benchlands Trail across from Iron Goat Pub and Grill) \nCost\n\n$20 for Public Agency Members\n$35 for ITE members\n$40 for non-ITE members\n$15 for Student ITE Members\n($650 Sponsorship)\n\nTransportation corridors make up the vast majority of public space in communities. How we allocate and design that space fundamentally influences the way a community looks\, feels and operates. No other aspect of engineering has such a critical role in shaping not just operational aspects of how people move\, but also the social\, economic and environmental outcomes for communities. While the practice of transportation engineering is evolving\, even today the tools and techniques used often result in poor outcomes for communities. While solving short-term vehicle transportation problems\, traditional methods can leave communities with long term congestion\, and safety and accessibility issues.  Canmore is unique only in it’s constraints\, and these constraints have forced the community to adopt integrated approaches sooner and more aggressively than most. \nThis tour will lead participants through a range of designs and show where a different set of priorities have been applied. Narrow traffic lanes\, windy roads\, wide paths\, separated bicycle facilities\, raised mid-block crossings\, continuous crossings\, and near-side traffic signals will be highlighted as emerging best-practice.  Benefits of the trade-offs between convenience while driving and place-making will be on display throughout\, including in areas where lanes have been narrowed\, turn bays have been removed\, and four-lane cross-sections have been converted to three-lane roads.  We will travel by bicycle on some of Canmore’s best and worst infrastructure to experience first-hand being placed in a variety of situations by designers.  It is hoped that through this short glimpse into different infrastructure types\, you’ll leave with a strong impression of the impacts that transportation designs can have on the way people travel\, and more importantly\, how community is created by roadway designs. All cycling abilities are welcome! \nTour Lead\n \nAndy Esarte is a civil engineer and graduate of the University of Western Ontario\, and has managed the engineering department for the Town of Canmore for the past 12 years. During that time he has overseen the development of Canmore’s first Integrated Transportation Plan in 2013 and subsequent update in 2018\, as well as Canmore’s first Integrated Parking Management Plan in 2018.  Prior to joining the Canmore team\, Andy worked as a project manager for light rail transit projects for the City of Calgary and designed bridges and heavy civil structures in consulting. \nResidents of Canmore since 2013\, Andy and his wife Karen have two young children aged 9 and 11. As a goal\, Andy aspires to creating a transportation network for Canmore that allows for safe and accessible travel by all residents and visitors to Canmore\, regardless of age or ability\, and with equity between travel modes.

The proliferation of personal electric mobility and the shift in designing to accommodate cyclists of all ages and abilities has had a profound impact on our City’s mobility system. London had an excellent foundation to build upon\, the City’s beloved pathway system (the Thames Valley Parkway)\, and has continued to expand its protected cycling network starting in the core. \nThis tour will take participants on a journey to experience many of our cycling-focused projects over the past 5 years. We’ll ride on multi-use pathways\, protected bike lanes\, cycle tracks\, bike boulevards and a flex street. We’ll get to see a variety of intersection treatments to improve vulnerable user’s safety\, including dedicated cycling phases\, leading pedestrian intervals\, and signals exclusively for people walking and cycling. Our best example of complete streets will be on display including many streetscape\, transit and cycling amenities and improvements. \nTour Lead: \nDaniel Hall is a transportation engineer focused on implementing cycling and walking infrastructure improvements in the City of London. With a background in transit planning and cycling advocacy\, and as a committed cyclist\, he brings many perspectives to his design and planning efforts. He’s currently working on obtaining his professional planning designation to be able to use the term ‘plangineer’. \nA long-time resident of London\, Daniel and his wife Jess have two young children aged 6 and 8. As a goal\, Daniel aspires to create a transportation network for London that allows for comfortable and convenient travel by all abilities and by all modes of travel and helps to develop a city where he doesn’t have to drive his kids to their friend’s houses. \n

SUMMARY:ITE Southern Alberta: September Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Date: September 19\, 2023 \nTime: 11:30am-1pm \nLocation: Danish Canadian Club (727 11 Ave SW\, Calgary\, AB T2R 0E3) \nCost: \n\n$20 for Public Agency Members\n$35 for ITE members\n$40 for non-ITE members\n$15 for Student ITE Members\n($650 Sponsorship)\n\nPresentation:\n\nOver the past couple years\, Cochrane has been a flurry of activity with improvements to Highway 1A and Highway 22 in full force. Two major projects have been underway: First\, Highway 1A Improvements which included widening from two lanes to four from Centre Ave to First St\, and the realignment of 4th Ave including a major secant retaining wall. Second\, an interchange at the infamous Highway 1A and Highway 22 intersection which includes widening the remaining section of Highway 1A to Highway 22. Two consulting firms have been heavily involved in the design and construction of these long-awaited projects. Urban Systems and ISL. \nUrban Systems is working with the Town of Cochrane and supported by Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (ATEC)\, to widen Highway 1A through the community\, adapting the plans developed by ISL\, and taking it through to construction with the support of Provincial grant funding. This widening has long awaited by the Town and dovetails into ATEC’s major upgrade at the Highway 1A and 22 interchange. \nJohn and Melissa will discuss the Highway 1A Improvements project and the unique features involved when delivering a multiple jurisdictional highway project. They will also cover Urban Systems’ involvement in the Highway 1A/Highway 22 Project enabling works\, the collaborative process employed and unique tasks involved the work. John and Melissa will expand on the out-of-the-box collaborative thinking that got the project off to a successful start for all parties. \nATEC with ISL\, have advanced the interchange construction of Highway 1A and Highway 22\, tying into the Highway 1A Improvements. The interchange will support the growth of the Town\, improve access to this area\, allow efficient movement of goods and people\, and enhance safety.  Vamsi and Dominic will discuss the unique challenges presented by the project and lessons learned. \nThese long-awaited projects are being delivered in partnership with Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors and the Town of Cochrane. \nSpeakers: \nUrban Systems \n \nJohn Stevens: John has worked at Urban Systems for 6 years on a variety of transportation and local government projects. These projects include the 88th Street SE Skeletal Road extension\, the Hwy 1A/22 utility relocations project\, and the HWY 1A Improvements project of which the last two will be discussed today. Through these projects John has taken a more prominent role in liaising with the Town of Cochrane and was the project manager for both Hwy 1A Improvements project and Hwy1A/22 utility relocations project. Playing a role in improving these vital transportation connection projects for one of Alberta’s fastest growing communities has been a rewarding process and John looks forward to sharing this project with everyone. \n  \n  \n  \n \nMelissa Henderson: Melissa has worked at Urban Systems for the past 2 years as a civil engineer-in-training. Over these 2 years she has worked on a variety of projects with The Town of Cochrane\, including the Flood Recovery and Erosion Control projects\, and the HWY 1A/22 utility relocations project which will be discussed today. Melissa played a key role in supporting Urban System’s local government team on the Hwy 1A/22 utility relocations project as contract administrator. She is excited to share some of her experiences on the project and how collaboration with ISL and Alberta Transportation \nand Economic Corridors lead to greater success for all parties. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nISL \n \nVamsi Surapaneni: Vamsi is ISL’s lead design engineer for the Highway 1A/22 interchange. He developed the now in-construction solution within the constrained space of historic lands\, major utility pipeline corridor\, CPKC tracks\, and Bighill Creek. Thanks to Vamsi\, Cochrane is witness to over one million cubes of earth being moved at this site. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nDominic Cheng: Dominic is one of ISL’s long-standing team members involved with the design of Highway 1A from the top of the hill at Gleneagles Drive westward to Horse Creek Road. He has seen the design of Highway 1A/22 evolve from an intersection upgrade to the interchange that is under construction today.

SUMMARY:ITE Vancouver Island Section Lunch’n’Learn: Public Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Support Guidelines
DESCRIPTION:Topic:\nPublic Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Support Guidelines \nPresenters:\n\nTim Shah\, RPP MCIP Transportation Planner\, Watt Consulting Group\nMaia Carolsfeld\, Electric Mobility Coordinator\, Climate Action\, Capital Regional District\nWyatt Ritchie\, P.Eng.\, Introba\n\nSummary:\nThe Capital Region Public Electric Vehicle Charging Guide\, one of the first of its kind in Canada\, provides guidance for businesses\, property owners\, and local governments to install publicly accessible electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in a consistent manner and help expand the charging network in the capital region. The presenters will discuss the key contents of the guide including [a] charging station design guidelines for publicly accessible EV charging stations in several common archetypes and locales in the capital region; [b] information about the science of EV charging station performance data\, which allows site hosts (those who own and manage a station) to understand whether their stations are meeting their organizational needs and objectives; and [c] common considerations that a site host would need to be aware of including the typical regulatory requirements of a local government\, and what to think about when considering a contractor to design and build the EV charging station. \nAs organizations in the capital region (and beyond) continue to look at opportunities to secure funding\, install\, and manage their EV charging stations\, the Capital Region Public Electric Vehicle Charging Guide will serve a valuable resource and help the CRD achieve its charging station targets by 2030 and gradually lower its transportation emissions over time.

SUMMARY:Multimodal Traffic Signal Operations Training
DESCRIPTION:This session will qualify for PDH credits for attendees. \nPlease note: This workshop on November 21\, 2023 is sold out. Thank you for your interest! As least two more virtual sessions of this training will be offered\, to be announced on itecanada.org\, our social media channels\, and email list. \nWorkshop Description\nStandard practices for traffic signal operations in Canada were designed around a traffic system which only included general motor vehicle traffic lanes and sidewalks. However\, in recent years with a rise in interest in sustainable transportation modes such as cycling and walking\, and an increased emphasis on safety\, Canadian streets increasingly include features such as separate bicycle paths and bus lanes. As a result\, intersections are increasingly including additional features such as fully-protected phases for turning movements\, bicycle phases\, transit phases\, and/or leading pedestrian/bicycle intervals. \nIn this training session\, Narayan Donaldson of Mobycon will lead a training on traffic signal operations practices\, sharing standard practices from the Netherlands that can be implemented within Canada’s current regulations to improve multimodal level of service. \nThe key topics that will be covered include: \n\nPrinciples of traffic signal operations for good multimodal level of service;\nHow to introduce flexibility into signal coordination to reduce delay for non-coordinated movements (i.e. pedestrians\, cyclists and transit)\, while still providing progression for motor vehicle traffic. Topics include permissive periods\, peer-to-peer signal communication\, and platoon detection;\nHow to design motor vehicle\, bicycle\, and pedestrian detection zones to maximize green\nutilization and minimize cycle lengths;\nHow to implement fully-protected turning phases or Leading Pedestrian/Bicycle Intervals efficiently\, leveraging phase order and intersection geometry to reduce lost time between phases; and\nHow to design signal operations to maximize the effectiveness of Transit Signal Priority and minimize its impacts on other users.\n\nLearning Outcomes\nUpon completion of the training\, participants will be able to implement changes to operating procedures which can significantly improve multimodal level of service and/or safety at signalized intersections including: \n\nImplementing permissive periods in signal coordination plans;\nImplementing peer-to-peer communication and/or platoon detection for signal progression\nin variable-cycle-length networks;\nOptimally selecting motor vehicle\, bicycle and pedestrian detector positions\, dimensions\,\nand settings;\nSelecting phase orders to minimize lost time and take advantage of geometric compatibility\nwhen using fully-protected turning phases or Leading Pedestrian/Bicycle Intervals;\nIdentifying intersection geometry characteristics which can enable more efficient signal operations with fully-protected signal phases and/or Transit Signal Priority; and\nDetermining Transit Signal Priority settings to achieve the desired balance between signal coordination\, transit performance\, and delay to other road users.\n\nTarget Audience\nThis training is intended for professionals who work directly with traffic signal operations\, such as traffic signals engineers and technicians\, as well as professionals who influence traffic signal operations such as signal operations managers\, active transportation infrastructure planners/engineers\, transit operations planners\, and other traffic engineers. \nTeam Bios\n \nNarayan Donaldson\nRole: Lead Trainer \nNarayan is a transportation planner with six years of experience in Canada and the Netherlands. SUMMARY:ITE Greater Vancouver: November Virtual Seminar - Central Valley Greenway Safety Review
DESCRIPTION:ITE Greater Vancouver is pleased to have Po Sun\, M.Sc.\, AICP\, from the City of Burnaby present on the Central Valley Greenway Safey Review at 12:00pm\, November 22\, 2023. The virtual seminar will be free and online. \nThe Central Valley Greenway is a 25-kilometre regionally significant active transportation corridor in Metro Vancouver. One of the most challenging locations along the Central Valley Greenway is an 850-metre section of Still Creek Avenue through an industrial area in the City of Burnaby. The City retained TranSafe Consulting Ltd. in conjunction with Urban Systems Ltd. to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the safety performance of this roadway for cyclists and pedestrians\, and to develop options and recommendations for improving the cycling and walking experience. Recognizing the safety issues identified\, the City subsequently adopted an innovative rapid implementation approach to install interim safety improvements using low-cost\, adjustable materials in December\, 2021. The interim design was developed through engagement with businesses along the corridor to allow the project team to incorporate their operational requirements. \nPo is a transportation planner with over 10 years of public and private sector experience that has spanned transportation plans at the city\, neighborhood and corridor levels\, including the design and implementation of multimodal mobility and complete street safety improvements. He is currently working as the Transportation Planner at the City of Burnaby and is passionate about making the places where we live\, work\, and play more accessible\, safe\, and enjoyable through enhancing the public realm and improving multimodal connections.\n\nJoin Virtual Event:\nhttps://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3ameeting_Y2IzYjliZTUtMjI2NC00OTEwLTk2OWMtZTk4MjhiOWIyOThj%40thread.v2/0?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%22875688ea-8b21-4b98-b25b-4b81851ad72d%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%224a3ba1e2-3eaf-46fd-a2aa-5dc1b59160ca%22%7d\n
