SUMMARY:ITE Greater Vancouver: Virtual Seminar - Planning for the Crowd: Traffic Management for Burnaby's Special Events – October 2026
DESCRIPTION:ITE Greater Vancouver Section is pleased to have the City of Burnaby and ISL Engineering and Land Services present their work on Traffic Management for Burnaby’s Special Events on October 15th\, 2026\, at 11:00 AM PT. The virtual seminar will be free and online. \nThe City of Burnaby hosts several high-profile events each year that require closing busy arterials and collectors\, many of them transit and truck routes. These range from Hats Off Day\, a community festival\, and Canada Day celebrations that drew over 65\,000 attendees\, to Car Free Day with TransLink\, Halloween fireworks\, and the Remembrance Day parade and ceremony in South Burnaby\, a small event with its own operational complexity. These events help create a vibrant\, sustainable\, inclusive and livable community\, in line with the City’s Strategic Plan goals. \nThis presentation reframes special events as temporary work zones. The duration\, risk profile and public behaviour differ from a construction zone\, but the planning rigour required is comparable or greater\, as is the coordination needed across event organizers and City departments. Drawing on a few Burnaby case studies\, the City and ISL Engineering and Land Services will cover traffic management plan development\, safety treatment selection\, the day-of execution model\, and the debrief practices that carry lessons into the following year — with practical takeaways for municipalities planning events on their own roads. \nSpeakers: \nMartin To\, P.Eng. — Transportation Engineer | City of Burnaby \nAlvin Tse\, P.Eng.\, RSP1 — Road Safety Lead | ISL Engineering and Land Services \nDate: October 15\, 2026 \nTime: 11:00 AM PT \nLocation: Virtual\n\nJoin Virtual Event:\nhttps://teams.microsoft.com/meet/269121818976088?p=BAjxnn23CVy0StPckh\n
