SUMMARY:ITE Canada Northern Alberta Section: Mind the (gender) Data Gap: Public Transit Needs of Canadian Women
DESCRIPTION:Gender has recently been emphasized as an issue to be featured on the agenda of sustainable\nand inclusive public transit planning practices. But\, this knowledge mobilization study led by the University of Alberta researchers revealed that transport planning and design have paid little\nattention to gender. This can be attributed to a lack of gender-specific data\, gender-neutral\nplanning practices\, and a lack of gender representation in the public transit workforce at all\nlevels (from transit operators to senior leadership). \nWith an absence of data collection practices designed to capture gender differences in public transit use and travel demand\, little gender- specific insight can be generated. This is problematic as data are applied in several aspects of transit planning\, such as developing service standards\, fare policies\, and business cases for major public transit projects. This presentation will focus on Canada’s gender data gap\, specific to public transit but also more broadly related to transportation data collection practices\, and its implications on transit planning\, operations\, and resource allocation. Lastly\, action to be taken to close the gender data gap and build an evidence basis of how women use public transit will be discussed with emphasis placed on how we can put women at the heart of future public transit strategies. \nPlease note\, this event takes place on a Thursday. \nDate: Thursday\, April 13\nRegistration & Social: 11:40 AM – 12:00 PM (MDT)\nLuncheon & Presentation: 12:00 – 1:00  PM (MDT) \nLocation: Faculty Club at the University of Alberta\, Winspear Room\, 11435 Saskatchewan Drive\, Edmonton\, Alberta\, T6G 2G9 \nAbout the Presenter\nDr. Emily Grisé is a forward-thinking transport researcher with specializations in the areas of transport & land use planning\, customer satisfaction & loyalty with public transport\, pedestrian & bicycle planning\, travel behaviour of disadvantaged populations (seniors and people with disabilities)\, and public transport planning & operations. She is an Assistant Professor in the School of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Alberta and her work focuses on collaboration with several local and regional transport agencies to directly address issues of concern to key stakeholders. She is also frequently engaged in providing transport expertise in the private sector. The underlying goal of her research is to develop effective policies that contribute to a more livable and sustainable society. \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:ITE Vancouver Island Section Lunch'n'Learn: Victoria International Airport Runway 09-27 End Safety Area
DESCRIPTION:Victoria International Airport Runway 09-27 End Safety Area\nPresented by Joseph Chen\, P.Eng PMP\nDirector of Planning & Engineering\,\nVictoria Airport Authority \nPRESENTER:  As Director of Planning &Engineering Joseph is responsible for overseeing engineering projects spanning the planning\, design\, procurement\, and execution phases.  He received numerous professional Engineering Association awards for both the Calgary International Airport East Deicing Apron project in 2022 and Calgary International Airport Runway and Tunnel project in 2015.  His previous airport experience (prior to joining VAA) includes work at Yellowknife\, Cold Lake\, and Hamilton airports. \nDESCRIPTION:  As reported in 2018\, Transport Canada at that time had plans to introduce new regulations that would make it mandatory for larger airports in Canada to have 150 metres of extra space at the ends of their runways. This extra space is known as Runway End Safety Areas (RESAs) and are designed to prevent aircraft from overshooting the prescribed landing area. \nThe move comes more than a decade after the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) found that the RESA at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport was too short\, after an Air France flight slid off one end of the runway and caught fire in August\, 2005. The TSB\, in its review of the incident\, recommended all major airports in Canada extend their RESAs by 300 metres. \nIt was reported that the runways at Victoria International Airport would fall under those proposed regulations from Transport Canada\, expecting the legislation would apply to airports that see commercial passenger traffic of at least 325\,000 a year — which Victoria exceeds. YYJ has peaked at just over to 2 million passengers through its gates in recent years. \nJoseph will give an update on the works under way at YYJ to comply with these requirements.

SUMMARY:The Road to Transportation Equity: Early Findings From Municipal Policies and Actions
DESCRIPTION:Many Canadian municipalities are establishing policies to confront inequities persisting from historical approaches to community and city planning. At the same time\, governments are continuing to invest in building transportation systems that aim to be safer and more sustainable in the face of climate change and other mobility challenges. What can be learned from the evolution of equity policies in Canadian municipalities to date\, and how can equity principles be applied on the ground to ensure that our road safety efforts benefit those who need them most? \nThis webinar will share early findings from an environmental scan of equity policies in Canada\, and key insights from transportation professionals who are actively integrating equity into their planning and practice\, including applications to road safety. This work is part of a broader research initiative—led by a team at Simon Fraser University and Level Up Planning—that is developing case studies of cities making progress on sustainable transportation equity. Following the webinar\, participants will have the opportunity to delve into lessons learned from these case studies more deeply at an interactive workshop at the upcoming ITE Canada/CARSP conference\, entitled “From Rhetoric to Reality: Promising Practices for Advancing Equity in Canadian Communities.” \nThis webinar will also provide an update on the ITE Canada/CARSP Conference 2023. \nRegister here for your tickets. \n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n \nTessa Williams is a Registered Professional Planner (RPP\, MCIP) that seeks to bridge the worlds of academia and practice in order to build more sustainable\, equitable communities. As a research assistant at Simon Fraser University and intern with LevelUp Planning Collaborative\, she is contributing to research that aims to offer practical guidance for multisectoral professionals involved in planning\, implementing or advocating for sustainable transportation \, and grappling with how to successfully embed equity in this work. She developed cross-jurisdictional transportation knowledge during her time in NS\, ON and BC\, and welcomes opportunities to learn about communities from coast to coast to coast. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nVictoria Barr\, PhD is Principal at LevelUp Planning Collaborative Inc.\, a consulting firm that helps communities build health and equity into their policies and practices. She has 25 years of experience as a planner\, advocate and researcher\, including work developing equity policies with municipalities. \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMark Hearson is a Transportation Engineer with Stantec in the Winnipeg office. Mark brings over 10 years of experience\, primarily from consulting to provincial and municipal clients across Canada while working in the private sector. He is a demonstrated leader\, with an ability to account for a broad range of considerations in the areas of transportation engineering and planning\, road safety\, airport planning\, investment strategy development\, and asset management. Mark is an executive member of the Transportation Association of Canada Road Safety Committee and co-chair of the upcoming joint ITE Canada/CARSP conference in Winnipeg.

SUMMARY:ITE Canada Southern Alberta Section: Advancing Your Career Through Certification
DESCRIPTION:Advancing Your Career Through Certification\nHow can you differentiate yourself in today’s competitive job market? One avenue is demonstrating advanced knowledge and expertise as well as a high level of dedication through the achievement of certification. \nThis webinar will present an overview about the Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) and Professional Transportation Planner (PTP); Road Safety Professional\, Level 1 (RSP1); and Road Safety Professional Level 2 (RSP2) – certifications offered by the Transportation Professional Certification Board (www.tcb.org). In this webinar\, we will provide in-depth information about the RSP certification. \nThe RSP certification establishes a minimum level of knowledge based on the current state of practice\, encourages professional development and growth by applying new concepts\, and creates an environment for universities to expand their curriculum to produce graduates that are proficient in the field of safety. Certified road safety professionals will be recognized for their knowledge\, experience\, and expertise in road safety. \nWith increasing emphasis being placed on consideration of safety in all aspects of transportation management\, the need to recognize road safety as a distinct discipline becomes evident.
