This month we will be featuring THREE presentations\, all from the University of Calgary: \nPresentation #1: Use of Crowd Source Data in Transport Planning and Traffic Management_ Intro to MTRADA\nTravel time estimation is an essential element in transport planning and traffic management. The intervention of intelligent transportation systems\, sensors systems and remote sensing methodologies has enabled to estimate travel times in high accuracy. Most of the travel time estimation models in the literature are inductive in nature\, which require vehicle travel time observations for calibration. Obtaining vehicle travel time data is both a time consuming and costly process for a single link and it is impractical to collect this information for all the links across the road network. Hence\, there is a need for travel time estimation models that are low in cost and more robust. Use of crowdsourced data and vehicle tracking techniques has further enhanced the estimation algorithms with accuracy and efficiency where use of google travel time data extracted from Google Distance Matrix API is a novel approach to gather representative information about real-time traffic conditions. \nM-TRADA (https://uom.lk/civil/transportation/software/mtrada) is a Cloud Based data mining platform to collect travel time data using Google map APIs. It was developed in year 2017 by Transportation Engineering Division\, Department of Civil Engineering\, University of Moratuwa. M-TRADA has now been developed in to a fully functional\, verified cloud-based platform. \nThe workshop will cover the methodology to collect travel time data with Google Distance Matrix API using MTRADA nd use of the method in transport planning and traffic management applications. \nBiography\nDimantha De Silva is a Principal Consultant at CPCS. He is also a sessional lecturer at the University of Calgary. Prior to that he was a Senior Lecturer at Department of Civil Engineering at University of Moratuwa. He received his M.Sc. in Transportation Engineering and B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the University of Moratuwa\, Sri Lanka and completed his PhD in Transportation Engineering from University of Calgary\, Canada. His research interests includes integrated land use transport demand modelling\, Big Data Analytics. \nPresentation #2: Designing Integrated Public Mobility in and Around University of Calgary\n(Description coming soon!) \nBiographies\nJoel Lethaby recently graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a Transportation Engineering minor. Joel now works for Associated Engineering as a Transportation Engineer-in-Training. Previously\, he completed a 16 month internship with Urban Systems where he was initially exposed to “complete street” style projects working on the Montgomery Main Streets Bowness Road project. This project sparked his passion for safe\, vibrant\, multi-modal streets\, and Joel hopes to work on more projects like this throughout his career. \nEremiahs Fikre is a recent Civil Engineering graduate. He is passionate about all things transportation engineering\, specifically traffic safety. During his undergraduate degree\, he completed an internship at the City of Edmonton with the Safe Mobility Team in which he helped with various initiatives for the Edmonton’s goal of Vision Zero by 2030. He hopes to continue making an impact in the transportation sector. \nKarim Kandil is a Transportation Engineer-in-Training with a strong background in software and technical expertise. Over the past two years at ISL\, Karim has played a role in the planning\, design\, and construction phases of significant urban transportation projects in Calgary and its surrounding areas\, such as the 26 Avenue SW Improvements and Downtown Flood Barrier. Driven by a passion for creating equitable and sustainable transportation networks\, Karim actively seeks innovative solutions that cater to the diverse needs of people of all abilities. Currently\, Karim is engaged in the development of a system that visualizes and analyzes transit performance throughout Calgary\, aiming to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of public transportation in the city. \nPresentation #3: Urban Calgary Student’s Association\nUrbanCSA works to promote connections and community between students\, faculty\, and local professionals. Over the past 8 months the club has tripled its student membership compared to the previous year and grown professional connections in the community. Our presentation highlights some of the major events and collaborations UrbanCSA has organized\, our plans for the upcoming year\, and how professional connects in the Calgary urban-industry vastly improves the post-secondary student experience. \nBiographies\nMax Webber is an Urban Studies student at the University of Calgary with a Minor in Architecture. He is an Executive VP for the Urban Calgary Students’ Association (UrbanCSA) and the Student Representative for Urban Studies within the Department of Geography. Max has spent the last year working with UrbanCSA to create a strong network connecting students and professionals\, and providing actual urban design opportunities for club members. He also works as the Director of Traffic and Development for the community of Southwood\, where he engages residents and addresses local concerns. \nSydney Ikeda just completed her third year in the Urban Studies program at the University of Calgary with a Minor in Economics. She works within the Urban Calgary Student Association as the VP of Marketing\, and is passionate about emphasizing the importance of peer relationships during university. Through UrbanCSA\, she has completed a creative engagement project alongside numerous professionals and students\, which was coined SketchMob. She values providing students and professionals of all backgrounds more information on urban design and city building. Currently\, she is working as a Growth Funding and Investment Summer Student with The City of Calgary\, where she analyzes funding sources for numerous projects that we enjoy on a daily basis.

After two decades in the private sector\, Brian joined the City of Hamilton in 2018 to lead a new Division responsible for a number of key City initiatives\, including management of the Hamilton Municipal Parking System\, implementation of the Transportation Master Plan\, oversight of transportation related development reviews\, and the delivery of sustainable mobility programs. \nThroughout his time in the private sector\, as a Director at IBI Group\, Brian managed numerous Transportation Master Plans for municipalities across Canada including York Region\, Ottawa\, Winnipeg\, Regina\, Victoria and many others. His work also included policy and planning work in the United States\, Brazil\, India and the UK.\nBrian has also been involved extensively in ITE Canada and TAC. He served on the ITE Toronto Section Executive and was President of the Section in 2002.
