DESCRIPTION:Join us at Evergreen Cultural Centre (located beside Lafarge Lake-Douglas Station) for a brief presentation at 3 pm\, followed by a walking tour of Guildford Way to learn more about the evolution of this corridor and its unique design features\, including active transportation and road safety improvements\, operations\, accessibility\, and lessons learned throughout the project! \nDATE:  Wednesday\, September 17\, 2025 \nTIME:   3:00pm – 6:00 pm (Tour & Networking) \nAbout Guildford Way Transportation Improvements Project \nThe Guildford Way Transportation Improvements Project is a multi-phase project to make walking\, biking\, and rolling more enjoyable\, improve road safety along a key regional connection in Metro Vancouver’s Tri-Cities area\, and help increase transportation choices. Guildford Way is a key corridor within the City of Coquitlam’s shared micromobility operation zone\, supporting trips by shared e-bike/e-scooter\, and connects to Lafarge Lake-Douglas SkyTrain Station and many other key destinations in Coquitlam. \nThe first phase was completed in 2023 and upgraded painted bike lanes to 1.5km of protected micromobility infrastructure from the Port Moody border to Johnson Street using “quick-build” concrete curbs to reduce costs and construction times. This first phase won the Infrastructure Project of Year award from HUB Cycling. The second phase between Johnson Street and Pinetree Way was completed earlier this year and added 0.7km of raised micromobility lanes\, wider sidewalks\, enhanced bus stops\, accessibility features\, improved street lighting\, and the first fully protected intersections in Metro Vancouver’s Tri-Cities. \nPresenters \nKey staff from the City’s Transportation Division\, who will be on this tour\, include: \n\nDoug McLeod (Director Transportation)\nThomas Thivener (Manager Transportation Planning)\nTyler Kuny (Manager Transportation Infrastructure)\nBernard Tung (Team Lead\, Traffic Systems)\nAnagha Krishnan (Team Lead\, Road Safety & Operations)\n\nNetworking \nFollowing the tour\, we will return to the Evergreen Cultural Centre for networking and appetizers. It is an excellent opportunity to socialize\, share insights\, and discuss the highlights of the tour. \nThere are a limited number of 25 spots for the tour\, so buy yours early! Registration ends on September 16 at 11:30pm.

SUMMARY:ITE Greater Vancouver: ITE & PIBC Mixer - How Can Transportation Engineers and Planners Move Equity From Rhetoric to Reality?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation by Tessa Williams (RPP\, MSc) to learn more about the new report “Practices and inspiration for sustainable transportation equity: Case studies from Canadian cities.” Following the presentation there will be an opportunity for networking and discussion with fellow engineers and planners. \nNearly 1 million Canadians live in transportation poverty\, where their ability to access opportunities is limited by inadequate\, unsafe\, or unaffordable transportation options. City builders are recognizing that the way transportation has been planned\, designed\, and delivered is unfair and needs to change. The big question facing the transportation community is no longer whether to take action towards equity\, but how. The Report\, created by a team of transportation practitioners\, equity experts\, and researchers from across Canada\, the report shares promising practices to apply equity throughout the project life cycle\, from policy and strategy to learning and evaluation. The report has been featured by the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC)\, Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP)\, and Canadian Association of Road Safety Professionals (CARSP). \nTessa is transportation planner with Urban Systems with over four years of experience across three different provinces. She leverages her unique background in local government and research to contribute to active transportation\, land use\, transit\, parking\, and equity projects. Tessa served as research lead for the PISTE project\, with the goal of developing a report by and for transportation practitioners. \nWednesday\, April 17\n5:30-5:45 people arrive and get settled (in the presentation room)\n5:45-6:30 Tessa presentation and question time\n6:30-8 networking in the FUNK venue \nVenue:\nFUNK. SUMMARY:ITE Greater Vancouver: February Virtual Seminar - BC Highway Reinstatement Program Highway 5 - Category B Project
DESCRIPTION:ITE Greater Vancouver is pleased to have Victor Wang\, P.Eng. and  Jonathan Ho\, P.Eng.\, PTOE\, from Kiewit Engineering Group Canada ULC present on the BC Highway Reinstatement Program Highway 5 – Category B Project at 12:00 pm\, February 21\, 2024. The virtual seminar will be free and online. \nNovember 15\, 2023\, marked the two-year anniversary of the atmospheric river and subsequent historic flooding and landslides that caused extensive damage to the highway and across the Province of British Columbia. Less than two years after the historic event and two months ahead of schedule\, all final permanent bridges on Highway 5 at Jessica\, Juliet\, and Bottletop are open to public traffic in permanent four-lane configuration\, as the Project reached substantial completion. Highway 5 is now more resilient and reliable\, supporting the movement of people and goods along this important corridor. The new bridges are built to withstand high water levels by using deep-pile footings and longer spans. Large rock protection has been added to protect the bridges from erosion and scour. Trees\, shrubs and grasses have also been planted to encourage stream-side re-vegetation and support overall restoration of aquatic and land habitat. In total\, the alliance team and local Indigenous communities planted around 4\,500 native plants at these sites to help return the environment to its natural landscape. \nVictor Wang is a Professional Engineer with 30 years of experience and expertise in transportation engineering and planning. He also possesses the Master of Engineering degree with strong background in different phases of infrastructure projects. Victor has played major roles in full project-delivery cycle of infrastructure projects including planning\, design\, and construction\, with specific focus on P3\, Design/Build (DB) and Design/Build/Finance/Operate (DBFO) projects. Victor was the Discipline Engineering Manager of the BC Highway Reinstatement Program – Highway 5 Project. \nJonathan Ho has over 15 years of experience in transportation engineering and planning. He was involved in several major transportation engineering and planning projects throughout British Columbia\, which included the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project\, Pattullo Bridge Replacement Project\, Highway 99 and Steveston Interchange Project\, and the Highway 91/17 Improvement Project. SUMMARY:ITE Greater Vancouver: November Virtual Seminar - Central Valley Greenway Safety Review
DESCRIPTION:ITE Greater Vancouver is pleased to have Po Sun\, M.Sc.\, AICP\, from the City of Burnaby present on the Central Valley Greenway Safey Review at 12:00pm\, November 22\, 2023. The virtual seminar will be free and online. \nThe Central Valley Greenway is a 25-kilometre regionally significant active transportation corridor in Metro Vancouver. One of the most challenging locations along the Central Valley Greenway is an 850-metre section of Still Creek Avenue through an industrial area in the City of Burnaby. The City retained TranSafe Consulting Ltd. in conjunction with Urban Systems Ltd. to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the safety performance of this roadway for cyclists and pedestrians\, and to develop options and recommendations for improving the cycling and walking experience. Recognizing the safety issues identified\, the City subsequently adopted an innovative rapid implementation approach to install interim safety improvements using low-cost\, adjustable materials in December\, 2021. The interim design was developed through engagement with businesses along the corridor to allow the project team to incorporate their operational requirements. \nPo is a transportation planner with over 10 years of public and private sector experience that has spanned transportation plans at the city\, neighborhood and corridor levels\, including the design and implementation of multimodal mobility and complete street safety improvements. He is currently working as the Transportation Planner at the City of Burnaby and is passionate about making the places where we live\, work\, and play more accessible\, safe\, and enjoyable through enhancing the public realm and improving multimodal connections.\n\nJoin Virtual Event:\nhttps://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3ameeting_Y2IzYjliZTUtMjI2NC00OTEwLTk2OWMtZTk4MjhiOWIyOThj%40thread.v2/0?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%22875688ea-8b21-4b98-b25b-4b81851ad72d%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%224a3ba1e2-3eaf-46fd-a2aa-5dc1b59160ca%22%7d\n

He is currently working as the Transportation Planner at the City of Burnaby and is passionate about making the places where we live\, work\, and play more accessible\, safe\, and enjoyable through enhancing the public realm and improving multimodal connections.

SUMMARY:ITE Greater Vancouver Section - Breakfast Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Flowing Equity\, Diversity\, and Inclusion into the Networks of Transportation Planning and Engineering \nThe ITE Greater Vancouver Section is pleased to have Clark Lim\, P.Eng.\, M.A.Sc.\, FITE\, to present at our breakfast seminar on May 31\, 2023. This event will be hosted in Richmond at the Kwantlen Polytechnic University\, and registration will include a hot breakfast for attendees. \nThe issue of equity\, diversity\, and inclusion (EDI) has gained significant traction since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.  Media incidents highlighting inequality and injustice\, both in the present and past\, have exposed systemic biases ingrained in our society and social norms.  Consequently\, this has prompted calls to action for change from elected officials to industry organizations and corporate giants.  As professionals\, it is incumbent upon us to respond to these calls.  But how do these highly political\, emotionally charged\, and occasionally violent issues pertain to our meek transportation industry?  How can we bridge the perceived gap between EDI and our daily work and deliverables?  By viewing these issues in a more holistic mirror\, we may find the answers to these questions are closer than they appear. \nClark has three decades of experience in public\, private\, and academic sectors\, specializing in analytical methods and information systems for transportation planning and engineering applications.  After completing his graduate research at UBC in driver distraction and attention modelling in the early 90’s\, he ended up at Metro Vancouver where he became involved in the establishment of TransLink and the Major Road Network (MRN).  Roles at TransLink included Project Manager of the Evergreen Rapid Transit Line planning and consultation process (2004-2006)\, and Program Manager for the Research and Technical Services group.  Currently at Acuere Consulting\, he leads the development of data-fueled cloud-based applications such as congestion measurement systems\, GHG inventory applications\, and EDI tools that help clients measure and improve their corporate sustainability and diversity quotient.  Annually\, Clark lectures on transportation engineering and planning at UBC as an Adjunct Professor\, and as a Visiting Professor at the University of Piura\, Peru.  At UBC\, he led the development of a triple-bottom-line methodology to measure the performance of the 2010 Olympic Games and future Olympic Games Host Cities\, so they can be positive champions for sustainability and social equity. \nWhen: May 31\, 2023\, 7:30 am – 9:00 am\nWhere: Kwantlen Polytechnic University – Richmond Campus – Room Main – 1380 (8771 Lansdowne Rd\, Richmond\, BC) \nRegistrations are permitted up to the day of the event\, however\, food is not guaranteed for those registering after May 24\, 2023. \nRegistration Fees: \nMembers –                 $20\nNon-members –        $25\nStudents –                  $10

SUMMARY:An introduction to Expert Witness Work for Traffic Engineers in BC - ITE Greater Vancouver Breakfast Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, most traffic engineers would never see the inside of a courtroom regarding a traffic engineering matter during the course of their career.  However\, it is absolutely critical for professional engineers to fully understand their role as the “Engineer of Record” and design professional from a legal point of view as traffic engineers have been getting more involved in expert witness testimony in BC in the last 5 years.  An expert witness\, particularly in common law countries such as the United Kingdom\, Australia\, Canada and the United States\, is a person whose opinion by virtue of education\, training\, certification\, skills or experience\, is accepted by the judge as an expert.  This presentation will provide attendees with an introduction to Common Law and expert witness definitions\, an overview of the BC Supreme Court and the BC Human Rights Tribunal process\, the typical timeline for expert witness work\, presentation of up to 6 case studies and some closing comments and advice to attendees. \nJan Voss \nJan Voss brings his expertise in traffic engineering\, parking operations\, transportation surveys and transport planning as both founder and current president of Creative Transportation Solutions Ltd. (CTS).  He is a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) and Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) in British Columbia\, Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories / Nunavut\, and has over 33 years of experience in the field of traffic engineering and operations.  Jan is a certified Expert Witness by both the Supreme Court of BC and the BC Human Rights Tribunal\, and has been providing expert witness testimony and advice for the past 20 years. \nGary Vlieg \nGary is the Vice President for CTS and is responsible for overseeing CTS’s work in the BC Interior\, providing expert witness advice to CTS’s clients\, leading technical assignments\, presenting findings to municipal councils\, mentoring staff and ensuring a high standard of quality on CTS projects.  Gary has over 34 years of experience in transportation planning\, traffic engineering and project management throughout Western Canada and New Zealand.  He is a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in British Columbia\, Alberta\, and Yukon Territory. \nBreakfast Meeting Details \nThis session will include a light breakfast at the Executive Suites Hotel & Conference Centre in Burnaby. \n7:30 am – 8:00 am Registration & Breakfast \n8:00 am – 9:00 am Presentation \n
