SUMMARY:ITE Greater Vancouver: Virtual Seminar - Planning for the Crowd: Traffic Management for Burnaby's Special Events – October 2026
DESCRIPTION:ITE Greater Vancouver Section is pleased to have the City of Burnaby and ISL Engineering and Land Services present their work on Traffic Management for Burnaby’s Special Events on October 15th\, 2026\, at 11:00 AM PT. The virtual seminar will be free and online. \nThe City of Burnaby hosts several high-profile events each year that require closing busy arterials and collectors\, many of them transit and truck routes. These range from Hats Off Day\, a community festival\, and Canada Day celebrations that drew over 65\,000 attendees\, to Car Free Day with TransLink\, Halloween fireworks\, and the Remembrance Day parade and ceremony in South Burnaby\, a small event with its own operational complexity. These events help create a vibrant\, sustainable\, inclusive and livable community\, in line with the City’s Strategic Plan goals. \nThis presentation reframes special events as temporary work zones. The duration\, risk profile and public behaviour differ from a construction zone\, but the planning rigour required is comparable or greater\, as is the coordination needed across event organizers and City departments. Drawing on a few Burnaby case studies\, the City and ISL Engineering and Land Services will cover traffic management plan development\, safety treatment selection\, the day-of execution model\, and the debrief practices that carry lessons into the following year — with practical takeaways for municipalities planning events on their own roads. \nSpeakers: \nMartin To\, P.Eng. — Transportation Engineer | City of Burnaby \nAlvin Tse\, P.Eng.\, RSP1 — Road Safety Lead | ISL Engineering and Land Services \nDate: October 15\, 2026 \nTime: 11:00 AM PT \nLocation: Virtual\n\nJoin Virtual Event:\nhttps://teams.microsoft.com/meet/269121818976088?p=BAjxnn23CVy0StPckh\n

SUMMARY:ITE Greater Vancouver: Presentation & Mixer - 264th Street Interchange (In-Person) November 2026
DESCRIPTION:ITE Greater Vancouver is delighted to announce an upcoming in-person presentation and mixer event. \nAbout the Presentation\nThe 264th Street Interchange \nThe presentation will be led by Ava Li and Jonathan Ho from Kiewit Engineering Group. \nThe BC Ministry of Transportation and Transit is upgrading Highway 1 between Langley and Chilliwack via the Fraser Valley Highway 1 Corridor Improvement Program. This program aims to enhance mobility\, safety\, and connectivity along Highway 1. As part of Phase 3A\, the existing Highway 13/264th Street interchange is being replaced with British Columbia’s first Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) to enhance access to the nearby U.S. border crossing and surrounding industrial areas. The project also includes multimodal transportation improvements such as truck parking\, a multi-use path\, a transit interchange with park-and-ride facilities\, and priority transit lanes. Construction staging was carefully planned to maintain traffic operations during daytime restricted periods\, while major disruptions such as detours and lane closures were limited to off-peak periods. Innovative traffic management measures\, including temporary detour ramps\, highway crossovers\, and signal upgrades\, were implemented to maximize constructability while minimizing impacts to road users. \nAbout the Event\nWhen: Tuesday\, November 17\, 2026\n5:30 pm – 5:45 pm Registration\n5:45 pm – 7:00 pm Workshop – Presentation\, Questions\, Discussion\n7:00 pm – 8:00 pm Food\, Mixer\, Socializing \nWhere: FUNK.
