DESCRIPTION:ITE Greater Vancouver is pleased to have Po Sun\, M.Sc.\, AICP\, from the City of Burnaby present on the Central Valley Greenway Safey Review at 12:00pm\, November 22\, 2023. The virtual seminar will be free and online. \nThe Central Valley Greenway is a 25-kilometre regionally significant active transportation corridor in Metro Vancouver. One of the most challenging locations along the Central Valley Greenway is an 850-metre section of Still Creek Avenue through an industrial area in the City of Burnaby. The City retained TranSafe Consulting Ltd. in conjunction with Urban Systems Ltd. to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the safety performance of this roadway for cyclists and pedestrians\, and to develop options and recommendations for improving the cycling and walking experience. Recognizing the safety issues identified\, the City subsequently adopted an innovative rapid implementation approach to install interim safety improvements using low-cost\, adjustable materials in December\, 2021. The interim design was developed through engagement with businesses along the corridor to allow the project team to incorporate their operational requirements. \nPo is a transportation planner with over 10 years of public and private sector experience that has spanned transportation plans at the city\, neighborhood and corridor levels\, including the design and implementation of multimodal mobility and complete street safety improvements. He is currently working as the Transportation Planner at the City of Burnaby and is passionate about making the places where we live\, work\, and play more accessible\, safe\, and enjoyable through enhancing the public realm and improving multimodal connections.

DESCRIPTION:Flowing Equity\, Diversity\, and Inclusion into the Networks of Transportation Planning and Engineering \nThe ITE Greater Vancouver Section is pleased to have Clark Lim\, P.Eng.\, M.A.Sc.\, FITE\, to present at our breakfast seminar on May 31\, 2023. This event will be hosted in Richmond at the Kwantlen Polytechnic University\, and registration will include a hot breakfast for attendees. \nThe issue of equity\, diversity\, and inclusion (EDI) has gained significant traction since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Media incidents highlighting inequality and injustice\, both in the present and past\, have exposed systemic biases ingrained in our society and social norms. Consequently\, this has prompted calls to action for change from elected officials to industry organizations and corporate giants. As professionals\, it is incumbent upon us to respond to these calls. But how do these highly political\, emotionally charged\, and occasionally violent issues pertain to our meek transportation industry? How can we bridge the perceived gap between EDI and our daily work and deliverables? By viewing these issues in a more holistic mirror\, we may find the answers to these questions are closer than they appear. \nClark has three decades of experience in public\, private\, and academic sectors\, specializing in analytical methods and information systems for transportation planning and engineering applications. After completing his graduate research at UBC in driver distraction and attention modelling in the early 90’s\, he ended up at Metro Vancouver where he became involved in the establishment of TransLink and the Major Road Network (MRN). Roles at TransLink included Project Manager of the Evergreen Rapid Transit Line planning and consultation process (2004-2006)\, and Program Manager for the Research and Technical Services group. Currently at Acuere Consulting\, he leads the development of data-fueled cloud-based applications such as congestion measurement systems\, GHG inventory applications\, and EDI tools that help clients measure and improve their corporate sustainability and diversity quotient. Annually\, Clark lectures on transportation engineering and planning at UBC as an Adjunct Professor\, and as a Visiting Professor at the University of Piura\, Peru. However\, it is absolutely critical for professional engineers to fully understand their role as the “Engineer of Record” and design professional from a legal point of view as traffic engineers have been getting more involved in expert witness testimony in BC in the last 5 years. An expert witness\, particularly in common law countries such as the United Kingdom\, Australia\, Canada and the United States\, is a person whose opinion by virtue of education\, training\, certification\, skills or experience\, is accepted by the judge as an expert. This presentation will provide attendees with an introduction to Common Law and expert witness definitions\, an overview of the BC Supreme Court and the BC Human Rights Tribunal process\, the typical timeline for expert witness work\, presentation of up to 6 case studies and some closing comments and advice to attendees. \nJan Voss \nJan Voss brings his expertise in traffic engineering\, parking operations\, transportation surveys and transport planning as both founder and current president of Creative Transportation Solutions Ltd. The presentation will describe the City’s vision for the corridor\, and how key elements of the Safe Mobility Plan were addressed as part of the review: including a focus on speed management\, vulnerable road user safety\, transit improvements and equity considerations. \nPresenter Bios Shabnem Afzal\, BA\, MSc Road Safety Manager & Vision Zero Lead\, City of Surrey Shabnem has held several Director positions within the B.C. provincial government\, including Director of Road Safety where she led the development of the award winning Integrated Road Safety Units & expansion of Intersection Safety Camera Program. She previously held the position of Director of Crime Reduction and Provincial Lead of the Premier’s Blue Ribbon Panel on Crime Reduction.
