SUMMARY:ITE Southern Alberta Luncheon - Sept 2026
DESCRIPTION:ITE Southern Alberta is hosting another luncheon at the Sandman Hotel. Join us for networking\, a delicious lunch\, and an informative presentation. \nDate: Tuesday\, September 15\, 2026 \nTime: 11:30 am – 1:00 pm MST \nLocation: Sandman Hotel Calgary\, 888 7 Ave. SW\, Calgary\, AB T2P 3J3 Canada \nThe event schedule is as follows: \n\n11:30 am – 12:00 pm: Networking\n12:00 pm: Buffet Lunch served\n12:10 pm: Presentation begins\n\nPresentation Description\nCalgary is expanding its primary transit network under the RouteAhead plan\, with 52 Street E identified as a priority corridor. As the city’s second busiest transit corridor\, with almost 20% of Calgary’s population living within 1km\, existing Bus Route 23 travels through 24 communities and connects major destinations while linking to existing and future MAX BRT and LRT routes. This bus route carries over 10\,000 daily riders\, but its 90 minute peak end to end travel time highlights inequities for north corridor communities\, many of whom rely on low income transit passes for mobility according to The City’s equity index. A functional study is being completed\, which recommends introducing a MAX BRT service on 52 Street E\, with strategic stops\, bus only lanes\, transit signal priority\, improved walking/wheeling access\, and enhanced station amenities. This will provide a more reliable\, convenient\, and comfortable transit service\, all adding to its attractiveness. It also proposes a MAX Teal extension from Douglas Glen station to 52 Street E\, upgrades at Saddletowne LRT station\, and a new southern terminal in Seton\, ahead of the Green Line extension. These improvements aim to enhance access\, support economic growth\, and provide more equitable transit options for East Calgary. \nPresenters\n \nAasha Williams-Blanco – Transit and Rail Team Lead (Alberta)\, Stantec \nWith more than 15 years in mass transit planning\, design coordination\, and major infrastructure\, Aasha brings a strong technical foundation in bus rapid transit (BRT) and light rail transit (LRT) project delivery. She has contributed to some of Calgary’s significant transit initiatives including the 52 Street East Max BRT\, Green Line LRT\, and the MAX Yellow BRT. Aasha has managed and coordinated key components of large transit programs—ranging from technical coordination to property acquisition and quantity estimating\, to alignment evaluation and life-cycle cost analysis. She is known for her people-first leadership style. She invests deeply in mentorship\, team development\, and creating environments where others can grow. When not at work\, Aasha thrives on staying active with her family and is intentional about fostering community with people she holds dear to her heart. She also loves to read\, or you’ll find her cheering from the sidelines at her kids’ hockey and soccer games. \nNusrat Jehanara – Transportation Engineer\, City of Calgary \nNusrat is a transportation engineer with the Transit Project Development team. She has over 15 years of private and public sector experience.  She started her career in rural highway design\, then moved to urban street design. Her interest in the public sector grew after meeting like-minded individuals at the 2017 NACTO conference in Chicago. Since joining the City of Calgary in 2020\, she has worked in the Public Spaces Project Development team\, managing wheeling and pedestrian improvement projects in diverse communities. She is currently working on the 52 St E BRT Functional Planning Study. \n==The deadline to register is 5 pm on September 11\, 2026==

SUMMARY:ITE Southern Alberta Luncheon: Human Factors and Traffic Engineering - May 2026
DESCRIPTION:Title: Bridging Human Factors and Traffic Engineering to Improve Road Safety \nHuman factors play a foundational role in transportation safety\, shaping how road users perceive\, interpret\, and respond to the roadway environment. Despite advances in geometric design\, traffic control\, and safety analysis\, many collisions still arise from mismatches between roadway design and human capabilities or limitations. Modern safety philosophies such as the Safe System and Vision Zero frameworks emphasize creating transportation networks that anticipate real-world human behavior and minimize the consequences of error. \nWhile traditional traffic engineering focuses on geometric design and regulatory compliance\, it can overlook elements such as driver perception\, cognitive workload\, and decision-making. This presentation will demonstrate how integrating Human Factors and Traffic Engineering expertise can improve safety outcomes. Through case studies and applied research\, we will explore how behavioral insights combined with engineering analysis can identify latent risks\, enhance intersection design\, and support the implementation of cost effective countermeasures. \nDate: Tuesday\, May 12\, 2026 \nTime: 11:30am-1:00pm MST \nLocation: Sandman Hotel Calgary\, 888 7 Ave. SW\, Calgary\, AB T2P 3J3 Canada \n==The deadline to register is 5 pm on May 5\, 2026== \n  \nPresenter Bios: \n \nJason Kumagai\, M.Sc.\, CCPE\, CHFP – Practice Lead\, Human Factors \nJason Kumagai is Practice Lead of the Human Factors group at 30 Forensic Engineering. During his career in Human Factors\, Jason has conducted and managed projects and research in Human Factors in a wide range of industries including energy\, health care\, transportation\, defence\, and mining. Specializing in fatigue risk management\, he has helped companies develop and implement fatigue risk management programs\, including investigations of major accidents. Jason is a certified Human Factors/ Ergonomics professional in both Canada and the U.S. and is nationally recognized for his leadership in Human Factors and Fatigue Management. Jason has served as a regional president of the Association of Canadian Ergonomists\, and president of the Canadian College for the Certification of Professional Ergonomists.

SUMMARY:ITE Southern Alberta: Workshop on Island Platform Bus Stops
DESCRIPTION:Join us on June 24\, 2025 for this in-person\, interactive workshop! This is an in-person event in Calgary. \nLocation: Urban Systems Ltd.\, 134 11 Ave SE #101\, Calgary\, AB T2G 0X5 \nDESCRIPTION\nOver the past several years\, communities across North America have implemented island platform bus stops (also known as floating bus stops) to accommodate people using transit and people of all ages and abilities who are cycling. \nIsland platform bus stops provide protected cycling infrastructure that routes cyclists between a bus stop and a sidewalk. Island platform bus stops reduce conflicts between cyclists and motorists; however\, they can also introduce new challenges for pedestrians\, particularly those with disabilities. \nIn 2024\, TransLink and the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure released the Design Guide for Bus Stops Adjacent to Cycling Infrastructure. While the Design Guide provides detailed technical guidance on how to improve the experience of all users at island platform bus stops\, there remain challenges to be addressed in continuing to improve accessibility and remove barriers to people with disabilities at island platform bus Island. \nJoin us for this interactive workshop to learn more about island platform bus stops\, including how to assess when they are the right design approach\, what are main issues and barriers that people with disabilities have experience with them\, and how to design them to help address the barriers faced by people with disabilities. \nThe workshop will include a summary of the Design Guide and the experiences from communities across North America\, along with a design exercise to apply learnings to real-world contexts. \nABOUT OUR PRESENTERS\nBrian Patterson\nBrian is a senior transportation and brings over 20 years of experience in active transportation planning and design\, multi-modal transportation planning\, and safety and accessibility. Brian has developed over hundreds of plans\, designs\, and studies for communities of all sizes across Canada and has been recognized with numerous industry awards. Brian led the development of the Design Guide for Bus Stops Adjacent to Cycling Infrastructure and has led numerous other design guides\, including the BC Active Transportation Design Guide. \n  \n  \nDylan Passmore\nDylan is a Principal Engineer with experience in both the private and public sectors leading transportation projects across North America and internationally. Dylan specializes in the engagement\, design\, and implementation of complex and sensitive multimodal corridor projects\, particularly related to inclusive pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure design. Leveraging his hands-on corridor design work\, Dylan has also led numerous research and engagement initiatives that advance innovative design practices\, such as floating bus stop design. Dylan’s experience as Engineer of Record for several programs and signature corridor projects at the City of Vancouver means he is intimately familiar with navigating diverse needs and the complex trade-offs inherent in the public sector. Dylan regularly leads design training workshops\, guest lectures\, and presents his work at leading transportation conferences. \n  \nCristina Lucca\, EIT\, EAP Consulting Ltd. \nCristina Lucca\, EIT\, currently works as a Transportation Engineer-in-Training with EAP Consulting Ltd. Her experience as an EIT led her to recognize the importance of human-centred design in transportation projects\, particularly in making infrastructure more accessible. Cristina had the opportunity to contribute to the development of the Design Guide for Bus Stops Adjacent to Cycling Infrastructure\, which involved extensive engagement with people who are blind and others with diverse accessibility needs. Prior to joining EAP\, she worked in the non-profit sector in the area of education and leadership\, which she continues to support as a volunteer. \n

SUMMARY:ITE SA - May Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Lessons from the Dutch by Roy Symons and Andrew Monson \nThis presentation will explore innovative Dutch street design principles that are either emerging in Canada or have potential. Drawing from the success of continuous sidewalks and protected bike paths implemented in Nanaimo—an initiative led by Roy Symons—this session will delve into what’s next. \nIntrigued by what more could be learned from the Netherlands\, Roy has undertaken several extended research trips to the country\, cycling extensively to understand firsthand what makes it the global leader in cycling infrastructure and mode share. His observations and insights from the first of those trips are captured in his book Fietspad\, and he will share many of the lessons learned during this session. \nWhile Nanaimo helped advance continuous sidewalks in British Columbia\, it was not the first in Canada to implement them. That distinction may belong to the Town of Canmore\, where Dutch-inspired street design has been quietly but meaningfully taking hold. Andrew Monson will present to highlight the ongoing transformation in Canmore\, showcasing recent projects that reflect a growing embrace of Dutch design thinking. \nRoy Symons P.Eng. is a Sustainable Transportation Specialist for ISL based in Burnaby\, BC but supporting ISL projects across Western Canada. He is passionate about Dutch design and its potential in Canada and is actively pursuing many such innovations on his projects today as well as trying to spread this knowledge in the industry through his Lessons from the Dutch. \nAndrew Monson\, P.Eng. is a transportation engineer with over a decade of experience designing safe\, efficient\, and comfortable streets and active transportation facilities. Since his move from Calgary to Canmore five years ago\, he’s acquired several bikes and a deeper appreciation for the perks of mountain town living. His favorite projects are the ones that see goat trail desire lines replaced with comfortable facilities and have a meaningful impact on his community.\n\nJoin Virtual Event:\nhttps://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3ameeting_M2QzYjNhMWMtZDRlYi00OGQ0LTg1OTgtM2IyN2Q5NWMxNWQ3%40thread.v2/0?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%223d234255-e20f-4205-88a5-9658a402999b%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%226c977523-8144-40d5-abd2-759b161cc3bc%22%7d\n

SUMMARY:ITE Southern Alberta: Transportation Management of Emergencies in Northern Alberta (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Transportation Management of Emergencies in Northern Alberta \nThe Peace Region has experienced either wildfires or floods every year since 2014. Each year\, it is a matter of when the emergency will strike\, not if. Part of Mae’s work as the Operations Manager includes managing highway closures and evacuation routes during such emergencies. In this presentation\, Mae is going to highlight the importance of networking and planning in advance of a disaster\, as well as regular training and communication. \nProper traffic accommodation is essential to protect both local communities and other road users. Mae will review what was done here in Alberta to aid the thousands of evacuees from the Northwest Territories and how sometimes a small gesture can make a huge difference! \nPresenter: Mae Stewart\, P.Eng \nMae has spent her entire career as a civil engineer in the public service\, working for municipal\, federal and now provincial governments. She has spent the last 16 years working for Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (TEC) in Peace River. As the Operations Manager\, Mae oversees the delivery of departmental programs on Alberta’s highway network\, First Nation and Metis Settlement road infrastructure\, park and urban access roads\, and ferries and ice bridges. She is responsible for the delivery of multi-million dollar highway maintenance contracts and provides leadership to a team of engineers and technologists. Mae has been involved in several innovative projects such as the design and construction of a carcass compost\, the construction and maintenance of an bridge across an 800m wide river\, and the creation of a five year strategic people plan to build an engaged and resilient workplace culture. \n \n\nJoin Virtual Event:\nhttps://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3ameeting_OGY1Mzg2ZTUtMGMzMS00MjJiLWIyYTUtMDU4YjkxMGYzYmZm%40thread.v2/0?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%22875688ea-8b21-4b98-b25b-4b81851ad72d%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%224a3ba1e2-3eaf-46fd-a2aa-5dc1b59160ca%22%7d\n

DESCRIPTION:Join us on April 10 for a presentation by Dr. Willem Klumpenhouwer on quantitatively measuring equity in transportation! \nMore about the talk: There is a growing desire from governments\, agencies\, and advocates to explicitly incorporate concepts of equity and transportation justice into the transportation planning process. One emerging effort in the industry is to develop and implement quantitative ways of measuring equity in the context of long-term planning and scenario evaluation.
