DESCRIPTION:Join us on June 24\, 2025 for this in-person\, interactive workshop! This is an in-person event in Calgary. \nLocation: Urban Systems Ltd.\, 134 11 Ave SE #101\, Calgary\, AB T2G 0X5 \nDESCRIPTION\nOver the past several years\, communities across North America have implemented island platform bus stops (also known as floating bus stops) to accommodate people using transit and people of all ages and abilities who are cycling. \nIsland platform bus stops provide protected cycling infrastructure that routes cyclists between a bus stop and a sidewalk. Island platform bus stops reduce conflicts between cyclists and motorists; however\, they can also introduce new challenges for pedestrians\, particularly those with disabilities. \nIn 2024\, TransLink and the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure released the Design Guide for Bus Stops Adjacent to Cycling Infrastructure. While the Design Guide provides detailed technical guidance on how to improve the experience of all users at island platform bus stops\, there remain challenges to be addressed in continuing to improve accessibility and remove barriers to people with disabilities at island platform bus Island. \nJoin us for this interactive workshop to learn more about island platform bus stops\, including how to assess when they are the right design approach\, what are main issues and barriers that people with disabilities have experience with them\, and how to design them to help address the barriers faced by people with disabilities. \nThe workshop will include a summary of the Design Guide and the experiences from communities across North America\, along with a design exercise to apply learnings to real-world contexts. \nABOUT OUR PRESENTERS\nBrian Patterson\nBrian is a senior transportation and brings over 20 years of experience in active transportation planning and design\, multi-modal transportation planning\, and safety and accessibility. Brian has developed over hundreds of plans\, designs\, and studies for communities of all sizes across Canada and has been recognized with numerous industry awards. Brian led the development of the Design Guide for Bus Stops Adjacent to Cycling Infrastructure and has led numerous other design guides\, including the BC Active Transportation Design Guide. \n \n \nDylan Passmore\nDylan is a Principal Engineer with experience in both the private and public sectors leading transportation projects across North America and internationally. Dylan specializes in the engagement\, design\, and implementation of complex and sensitive multimodal corridor projects\, particularly related to inclusive pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure design. Leveraging his hands-on corridor design work\, Dylan has also led numerous research and engagement initiatives that advance innovative design practices\, such as floating bus stop design. Dylan’s experience as Engineer of Record for several programs and signature corridor projects at the City of Vancouver means he is intimately familiar with navigating diverse needs and the complex trade-offs inherent in the public sector. Dylan regularly leads design training workshops\, guest lectures\, and presents his work at leading transportation conferences. \n \nCristina Lucca\, EIT\, EAP Consulting Ltd. \nCristina Lucca\, EIT\, currently works as a Transportation Engineer-in-Training with EAP Consulting Ltd. Her experience as an EIT led her to recognize the importance of human-centred design in transportation projects\, particularly in making infrastructure more accessible. Led by development manager Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) on behalf of project partners the Calgary Stampede and Calgary Transit\, this multi-modal project was designed to enhance District connectivity and accessibility for people walking\, wheeling\, and driving across 17 Avenue S.E. into Stampede Park\, and to modernize the busy LRT station to better serve Calgarians and visitors alike. \nISL Engineering with support from GEC Architecture\, WSP\, and Platinum Engineering delivered design services for the station and surrounding pedestrian realm. The extension was designed by Arcadis\, DesignCore\, and O2 Planning & Design. PCL Construction served as construction manager for both the station and the extension. His observations and insights from the first of those trips are captured in his book Fietspad\, and he will share many of the lessons learned during this session. \nWhile Nanaimo helped advance continuous sidewalks in British Columbia\, it was not the first in Canada to implement them. That distinction may belong to the Town of Canmore\, where Dutch-inspired street design has been quietly but meaningfully taking hold. The presentation will provide an overview of design and construction scope splits for the NE LRT Extension to McKnight Westwinds\, Oliver Bowen Maintenance Facility\, NE Extension to Saddletowne\, NW LRT Extension to Crowfoot\, NW LRT Extension to Tuscany and West LRT. As a special extra an overview of the CAF Urbos 100x LRV for the Green Line will be provided. \nAbout the Presenter\nShakti (Shak) Sarai P. Eng is a seasoned rail transit systems professional with nearly 20 years of extensive rail transit experience encompassing operations and maintenance\, LRT Extension projects and critical upgrades and refurbishments alike. Shak has been part of the delivery teams for the 1st Street SW station refurbishment\, NE Extension to McKnight Westwinds\, Oliver Bowen Maintenance Facility\, West LRT\, Westbrook Operations Control Centre\, NW LRT Extension to Crowfoot\, 4 Car Traction Power Upgrades\, 7th Avenue Refurbishment. During his time in the private sector Shak has had the priviledge of working on the preliminary engineering of Edmonton’s Valley Line SE as well as testing and commissioning efforts on the Canada Line. Shak has also spent time on the operations and maintenance side of things with Calgary Transit providing stewardship over CT’s traction power assets for five years before moving on to Green Line. Shak has dedicated six plus years to the Green Line program development including the technical development and procurement of the new low floor Light Rail Vehicle. Shak is currently part of the Green Line Corporate Liaison Team and in his role\, he is leading the technical interface and operational readiness activities to help Calgary Transit into operating and maintaining the Green Line. \n

DESCRIPTION:About the Presentation\nLocated 486km northwest of Edmonton\, the Town of Peace River is the second largest centre in northwestern Alberta with a population of 6\,620 people. The recent construction of a new bridge across the Peace River with dedicated active transportation infrastructure spurred significant opportunity for active transportation connectivity through the Town. \nBunt & Associates\, together with the Town\, developed an Active Transportation Plan to provide infrastructure and policy recommendations to provide the Town of Peace River with critical initial steps towards continued active transportation growth. Bunt will present an overview of the Active Transportation Plan project including a look into Peace River’s current network\, a highlight of some of the geographical and climate challenges\, and the draft plan. \n \nAbout the Presenter\n \nErin Tattrie\, RSE\, AScT\, joined Bunt & Associates in 2019 after graduating from BCIT. Since then\, she has obtained her AScT designation with ASTTBC and now works in Bunt’s Kelowna office. Erin has been involved in a range of transportation planning projects\, including transportation impact assessments\, active transportation plans\, transportation demand management plans\, parking and loading studies\, and GIS analysis. DESCRIPTION:LoRaWAN is a technology in the Industrial Internet Of Things that has unlocked the ability to solve problems that were not easily solvable with battery powered Long Range radio networking technology. The technology is still in its infancy and has unlimited potential in commercialization of new and evolving solutions. The presentation will introduce the technology and the capabilities around Smart City applications such acoustic monitoring for loud vehicles. \nPresenters: \nColin Adderley\, B.Sc\, B.Eng\, P.Eng \nAn innovative\, professional engineer practicing in Calgary\, Alberta\, Canada working collaboratively with a proven record. Colin has over 20 years of engineering experience that includes telecommunications\, product & software development\, operations and major capital projects over his career. The last five years at the City Of Calgary\, he has spent engineering\, developing\, testing and collaborating on emerging IoT technologies and preparing the City ecosystem proactively to be able to adopt new technologies. The collaboration with internal and external teams also focuses on solutions that reduce business risk and help validate operating requirements. His contributions to the collaborative work has helped the City win multiple awards in the Smart City space. When not at work\, he enjoys his family activities around music\, food\, sports and exercise. \nAmy Sun\, M.A.Sc\, B.Eng\, EIT \nAmy joined the City of Calgary January this year. Since joining\, she has quickly learned her way around and contributed to many IIoT use case design and deployments. Outside of technical contributions\, she co-presented at the IT Connect 2024 event: demonstrating how the city benefits from LoRa technology. Prior to joining the city\, she held a role as a Radio Frequency System Designer in equipment manufacturing. Each year\, it is a matter of when the emergency will strike\, not if. Part of Mae’s work as the Operations Manager includes managing highway closures and evacuation routes during such emergencies. In this presentation\, Mae is going to highlight the importance of networking and planning in advance of a disaster\, as well as regular training and communication. \nProper traffic accommodation is essential to protect both local communities and other road users. Mae will review what was done here in Alberta to aid the thousands of evacuees from the Northwest Territories and how sometimes a small gesture can make a huge difference! \nPresenter: Mae Stewart\, P.Eng \nMae has spent her entire career as a civil engineer in the public service\, working for municipal\, federal and now provincial governments. She has spent the last 16 years working for Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (TEC) in Peace River. As the Operations Manager\, Mae oversees the delivery of departmental programs on Alberta’s highway network\, First Nation and Metis Settlement road infrastructure\, park and urban access roads\, and ferries and ice bridges. She is responsible for the delivery of multi-million dollar highway maintenance contracts and provides leadership to a team of engineers and technologists. As the leader of Community Projects at The City of Calgary\, she supports a team reimagining mobility\, parks and recreation. In 2022\, Jen delivered a Neighbourhood Streets Policy to Calgary city council. The new policy goes beyond traffic calming and aims to renew balance between place and mobility. Jen most enjoys contributing ideas and helping build communities of practice\, having served as president of ITE Canada from 2015-2017. Jen has led many complex projects such as Flyover Park\, LRT and BRT functional plans\, and recently served on an expert panel to advise Parks Canada on Sustainable Transportation opportunities within Banff National Park. Jen most enjoys contributing ideas and helping build communities of practice\, having served as president of ITE Canada from 2015-2017. Jen has led many complex projects such as Flyover Park\, LRT and BRT functional plans\, and recently served on an expert panel to advise Parks Canada on Sustainable Transportation opportunities within Banff National Park. She has worked closely with clients in various municipalities throughout Alberta\, British Columbia and Manitoba to ensure safe and comfortable mobility options for people of all ages and abilities. She has developed a unique perspective of balancing competing needs through all phases of a project and between different roadway users. \nMarcia will share key insights from a panel discussion hosted by the Southern Alberta Section in November of 2023 that explored the ways in which transportation engineers interact with the provincial Road Safety Act\, and how we can best work together to support evolution of legislation while pursuing safe and equitable street design decisions. \nTechnology on the Highway: Are We There Yet?\nDerek Jaworski is a graduate of the University of Regina Faculty of Engineering\, and has worked for the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways since 2006. After working five years as a Traffic Engineer\, he became Manager of Traffic Services and has remained in that capacity since. His primary responsibility is managing traffic data on the highway and rural municipal road systems. In recent years\, his responsibility has expanded towards ITS\, including authoring and updating the Strategic Plan for ITS in Saskatchewan\, and overseeing ITS related operations. In TAC he is a member of the ITS Committee and participates in the Connected and Automated Vehicles Integrated Committee and the Technology Council. \nHis presentation will highlight some of the technology the Ministry of Highways uses from a monitoring and traveler information perspective\, and describe conditions that affect the operation of the system. While a plan for the future is on paper\, a few back-of-mind things will be mentioned that could shake the plan from more of the same. \nRural Intersection Road Safety\nDr. Craig Milligan is a recognized international expert in road safety engineering and product manager for safety technologies at Miovision as well as the managing director of Fireseeds North Infrastructure\, a leading road safety audit firm. He has completed more than 600 in-service road safety reviews and design audits at all stages for more than $8B of capital projects\, and he is a frequent road safety instructor for the International Road Federation. He built and led MicroTraffic\, a leading road safety video analytics company\, until its acquisition by Miovision in February 2023. He has authored 30 technical papers and 10 design guidelines. \nRural intersections are unfortunately the sites of many collisions resulting in fatalities and serious injuries. High speeds and right angles combine to produce high risk potential\, although there are opportunities to manage this risk through a wide range of interventions and design practices. This presentation will look at a spectrum of proven interventions for rural intersection safety and a spectrum of methods for deciding where to implement these interventions. DESCRIPTION:In early 2021\, Urban Systems was funded by Health Canada to examine the current state of efforts to integrate and consider health in planning processes – including transportation planning and design – and based upon this research develop an easy-to-use guide that would serve as a resource for planning\, engineering\, and public health staff to understand how and when they could effectively support each other in creating healthier built environments. \nThrough this project\, the project team at Urban Systems was able to connect with built environment and public health professionals from across Canada and gain valuable insight into effective approaches to considering and quantifying health in various types of planning processes. These resources are currently being shared by both the Canadian Institute of Planners as well as the Federation of Canadian Municipalities as valuable guidance for their members seeking to design and develop healthier communities. \nIn this informative session\, Jamie Hilland will discuss observations and lessons learned through the development of these resources\, as well as practical applications for his own role as a Community and Transportation Planner in both public and private sectors. This interactive workshop will provide an overview of what health means in communities and within the context of transportation planning\, designing\, and decision-making. Jamie will provide an overview of his previous work with Health Canada and consider the social determinants of health.
