SUMMARY:ITE Southern Alberta: Transportation Management of Emergencies in Northern Alberta (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Transportation Management of Emergencies in Northern Alberta \nThe Peace Region has experienced either wildfires or floods every year since 2014. Each year\, it is a matter of when the emergency will strike\, not if. Part of Mae’s work as the Operations Manager includes managing highway closures and evacuation routes during such emergencies. In this presentation\, Mae is going to highlight the importance of networking and planning in advance of a disaster\, as well as regular training and communication. \nProper traffic accommodation is essential to protect both local communities and other road users. Mae will review what was done here in Alberta to aid the thousands of evacuees from the Northwest Territories and how sometimes a small gesture can make a huge difference! \nPresenter: Mae Stewart\, P.Eng \nMae has spent her entire career as a civil engineer in the public service\, working for municipal\, federal and now provincial governments. She has spent the last 16 years working for Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (TEC) in Peace River. As the Operations Manager\, Mae oversees the delivery of departmental programs on Alberta’s highway network\, First Nation and Metis Settlement road infrastructure\, park and urban access roads\, and ferries and ice bridges. She is responsible for the delivery of multi-million dollar highway maintenance contracts and provides leadership to a team of engineers and technologists. Mae has been involved in several innovative projects such as the design and construction of a carcass compost\, the construction and maintenance of an bridge across an 800m wide river\, and the creation of a five year strategic people plan to build an engaged and resilient workplace culture. \n \n\nJoin Virtual Event:\nhttps://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3ameeting_OGY1Mzg2ZTUtMGMzMS00MjJiLWIyYTUtMDU4YjkxMGYzYmZm%40thread.v2/0?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%22875688ea-8b21-4b98-b25b-4b81851ad72d%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%224a3ba1e2-3eaf-46fd-a2aa-5dc1b59160ca%22%7d\n

DESCRIPTION:Join us on April 10 for a presentation by Dr. Willem Klumpenhouwer on quantitatively measuring equity in transportation! \nMore about the talk: There is a growing desire from governments\, agencies\, and advocates to explicitly incorporate concepts of equity and transportation justice into the transportation planning process. One emerging effort in the industry is to develop and implement quantitative ways of measuring equity in the context of long-term planning and scenario evaluation. In this presentation we will look at how we can evaluate existing and future conditions through a quantitative\, equity-focused lens and incorporate these measures into business cases and long-term planning exercises. \nDate: April 10\, 2024 \nTime: 11:30am-1:00pm \nLocation: Danish Canadian Club (727 11 Ave SW\, Calgary\, AB T2R 0E3) \nCost: \nIn-Person Options: \n\n$20 Public Agency Members (in Calgary)\n$30 ITE Members (in Calgary)\n$40 Non-ITE Members (in Calgary)\n$15 Student (in Calgary)\n$20 Public Agency Members (in Calgary)\n$20 ITE Members (in Lethbridge)\n$25 Non ITE Members (in Lethbridge)\n\nOnline: \n\n $15 All Members and Non-Members\n\nSponsorship \n\n$650 Sponsorship\n\nNote that this year\, in an effort to accommodate more transportation professionals across our province (especially those in Lethbridge)\, we’re offering additional attendance options. SUMMARY:ITE Canada Prairie Sections – Joint Virtual Event Beyond the Horizon: Future-Proofing Transportation on the Prairies
DESCRIPTION:Delving into the current state and long-term vision for transportation on the Canadian prairies\, focusing on adaptability\, resilience\, and safety.\nThe Northern Alberta\, Southern Alberta\, Saskatchewan\, and Manitoba Sections are pleased to invite you to our first joint event\, entitled\, Beyond the Horizon: Future-Proofing Transportation on the Prairies. Speakers will focus on four key topics relevant to the current state and long-term vision of transportation on the prairies. This is an interactive session – we want to hear your thoughts and ideas. \nDate: Monday\, February 26\nTime: 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm MST (2:00 pm – 3:30 pm CST)\nRegistration Fee:\nMember: $5\nNon-Member: $10\nStudents: Free \nAll proceeds will be donated to Indspire\, a national Indigenous registered charity that invests in the education of First Nations\, Inuit and Métis people. \nSpeakers and Topics\nEmergency Response for Alberta Wild Fire Evacuation\nDr. Stephen Wong is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta and leads the Resilient and Sustainable Mobility and Evacuation (RESUME) Group. Dr. Wong’s research focuses on the intersection of disasters/emergencies\, decision-making\, and transportation and works to create more resilient\, environmentally friendly\, and equitable transportation systems. He is actively involved in resilience and young professional activities at the Transportation Research Board and evacuation research at the International Association for Fire Safety Science. Dr. Wong received his Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of California\, Berkeley in 2020. \n  \nRoad Safety Act Discussion\nMarcia Eng is a Senior Transportation Engineer and has over 23 years of diverse transportation planning and operations\, urban design and construction\, and project management experience. She has worked closely with clients in various municipalities throughout Alberta\, British Columbia and Manitoba to ensure safe and comfortable mobility options for people of all ages and abilities. She has developed a unique perspective of balancing competing needs through all phases of a project and between different roadway users. \nMarcia will share key insights from a panel discussion hosted by the Southern Alberta Section in November of 2023 that explored the ways in which transportation engineers interact with the provincial Road Safety Act\, and how we can best work together to support evolution of legislation while pursuing safe and equitable street design decisions. \nTechnology on the Highway: Are We There Yet?\nDerek Jaworski is a graduate of the University of Regina Faculty of Engineering\, and has worked for the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways since 2006. After working five years as a Traffic Engineer\, he became Manager of Traffic Services and has remained in that capacity since. His primary responsibility is managing traffic data on the highway and rural municipal road systems. In recent years\, his responsibility has expanded towards ITS\, including authoring and updating the Strategic Plan for ITS in Saskatchewan\, and overseeing ITS related operations. In TAC he is a member of the ITS Committee and participates in the Connected and Automated Vehicles Integrated Committee and the Technology Council. \nHis presentation will highlight some of the technology the Ministry of Highways uses from a monitoring and traveler information perspective\, and describe conditions that affect the operation of the system. While a plan for the future is on paper\, a few back-of-mind things will be mentioned that could shake the plan from more of the same. \nRural Intersection Road Safety\nDr. Craig Milligan is a recognized international expert in road safety engineering and product manager for safety technologies at Miovision as well as the managing director of Fireseeds North Infrastructure\, a leading road safety audit firm. He has completed more than 600 in-service road safety reviews and design audits at all stages for more than $8B of capital projects\, and he is a frequent road safety instructor for the International Road Federation. He built and led MicroTraffic\, a leading road safety video analytics company\, until its acquisition by Miovision in February 2023. He has authored 30 technical papers and 10 design guidelines. \nRural intersections are unfortunately the sites of many collisions resulting in fatalities and serious injuries. High speeds and right angles combine to produce high risk potential\, although there are opportunities to manage this risk through a wide range of interventions and design practices. This presentation will look at a spectrum of proven interventions for rural intersection safety and a spectrum of methods for deciding where to implement these interventions. In general this ranges from systemic\, wide scale application of low-cost interventions to focused application of high-cost interventions following screening and detailed risk diagnosis. \n*** \nAttendees will hear brief overview presentations from all speakers\, and then delve deeper into two topics during breakout group discussions. Come to hear ideas\, share ideas\, and connect with peers from across the prairies.  \nAgenda: \n\n\n\n1:00 pm – 1:10pm \nWelcome and introductions\n\n\n1:10pm – 1:35pm\nOverview presentations \n\n\n1:35pm – 1:55pm\nBreakout group 1\n\n\n1:55pm – 2:15pm\nBreakout group 2\n\n\n2:15pm – 2:30pm\nReconvene with all attendees\n\n\n2:30pm \nAdjourn formal session\n\n\n2:30pm – 3:00pm\nOptional networking period\n\nJoin Virtual Event:\nhttps://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3ameeting_Y2QzMjQ2NGItNzlmZi00YzMwLTkxODgtN2EwOTdlNzcwY2I4%40thread.v2/0?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%22340aac21-6d62-411f-88fb-2753784f2a28%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%220b7b7915-16e6-4838-a6a3-07bd68720e63%22%7d\n

SUMMARY:ITE Southern Alberta: February Luncheon: Integrating Health into Transportation Planning
DESCRIPTION:In early 2021\, Urban Systems was funded by Health Canada to examine the current state of efforts to integrate and consider health in planning processes – including transportation planning and design – and based upon this research develop an easy-to-use guide that would serve as a resource for planning\, engineering\, and public health staff to understand how and when they could effectively support each other in creating healthier built environments. \nThrough this project\, the project team at Urban Systems was able to connect with built environment and public health professionals from across Canada and gain valuable insight into effective approaches to considering and quantifying health in various types of planning processes. These resources are currently being shared by both the Canadian Institute of Planners as well as the Federation of Canadian Municipalities as valuable guidance for their members seeking to design and develop healthier communities. \nIn this informative session\, Jamie Hilland will discuss observations and lessons learned through the development of these resources\, as well as practical applications for his own role as a Community and Transportation Planner in both public and private sectors. This interactive workshop will provide an overview of what health means in communities and within the context of transportation planning\, designing\, and decision-making. Jamie will provide an overview of his previous work with Health Canada and consider the social determinants of health. This will include a guided review of the Integrating Health in Planning guide\, an overview of the Health Impact Assessment five-step process and other methods to considering health implications in your next transportation plan or project. \nDate: February 20\, 2024\nTime: 11:30am-1:00pm\nLocation: Danish Canadian Club (727 11 Ave SW\, Calgary\, AB T2R 0E3)\nRegistration Deadline: February 16\, 2024 \nCost:\nIn-Person Options:\n• $20 Public Agency Members (in Calgary)\n• $30 ITE Members (in Calgary)\n• $40 Non-ITE Members (in Calgary)\n• $15 Student (in Calgary)\n• $20 ITE Members (in Lethbridge)\n• $25 Non ITE Members (in Lethbridge) \nOnline:\n• $15 All Members and Non-Members \nNote that this year\, in an effort to accommodate more transportation professionals across our province (especially those in Lethbridge)\, we’re offering additional attendance options. SUMMARY:ITE Southern Alberta: Bus Priority Measures in Calgary: Benefits and Requirements
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce the first ITE Southern Alberta Section event of 2024! Join us at the Danish Canadian Club for a presentation on Transit Priority from our very own ITE Executive Publicity Coordinator\, Bidoura Khondaker. \n*** \nTransit priority measures are an efficient tool in making transit a fast and reliable choice for transportation needs. These measures reduce bus delays\, improve schedule adherence and transit travel time reliability at known problem areas on a network. Transit priority measures not only benefit transit buses but also improve non-transit traffic flow moving in the same direction. Transit priority can be implemented in a variety of ways\, ranging from traffic signal control to providing dedicated space on roadways for transit. \nIn this talk\, Bidoura will highlight some of the bus priority measures (bus Queue Jump and Transit Signal Priority\, TSP in particular) that have been implemented in Calgary which forms an integral part of Calgary Transit’s plan. She will discuss the key requirements\, design aspects and benefits derived from these priority measures in making public transit service more efficient and reliable for users and providing an incentive to take the bus rather than drive. \nSpeaker Bio:\nBidoura Khondaker is a passionate\, enthusiastic and skilled Transportation professional with more than twelve years of blended experience in Academia and Industry. She is currently working as Senior Transportation Engineer in Service Planning\, Transit Service Design at Calgary Transit. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering\, Master’s Degree in Transportation engineering from University of British Columbia and PhD from University of Calgary. Bidoura has been actively involved with ITE since 2009\, recently joined ITE Southern Alberta as an executive committee member\, also currently working as an active volunteer member of the TAC Technology Council. Bidoura is committed to create a gender diverse and inclusive workplace\, she is a committee member of Women in Transit (WIT) and leading some key initiatives to enhance Calgary Transit’s commitment to women. As important as being a Transportation professional\, advocate of change and volunteer\, Bidoura is a mom too. Her time outside of work is spent learning the life lessons that only parenthood can bring. \nDate: January 16\, 2024\nTime: 11:30am-1:00pm\nLocation: Danish Canadian Club (727 11 Ave SW\, Calgary\, AB T2R 0E3)\nCost:\nIn-Person Options:\n• $20 Public Agency Members (in Calgary)\n• $30 ITE Members (in Calgary)\n• $40 Non-ITE Members (in Calgary)\n• $15 Student (in Calgary)\n• $20 ITE Members (in Lethbridge)\n• $25 Non ITE Members (in Lethbridge)\nOnline:\n• $15 All Members and Non-Members \nNote that this year\, in an effort to accommodate more transportation professionals across our province (especially those in Lethbridge)\, we’re offering additional attendance options. SUMMARY:ITE Southern Alberta: September Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Date: September 19\, 2023 \nTime: 11:30am-1pm \nLocation: Danish Canadian Club (727 11 Ave SW\, Calgary\, AB T2R 0E3) \nCost: \n\n$20 for Public Agency Members\n$35 for ITE members\n$40 for non-ITE members\n$15 for Student ITE Members\n($650 Sponsorship)\n\nPresentation:\n\nOver the past couple years\, Cochrane has been a flurry of activity with improvements to Highway 1A and Highway 22 in full force. Two major projects have been underway: First\, Highway 1A Improvements which included widening from two lanes to four from Centre Ave to First St\, and the realignment of 4th Ave including a major secant retaining wall. Second\, an interchange at the infamous Highway 1A and Highway 22 intersection which includes widening the remaining section of Highway 1A to Highway 22. Two consulting firms have been heavily involved in the design and construction of these long-awaited projects. Urban Systems and ISL. \nUrban Systems is working with the Town of Cochrane and supported by Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (ATEC)\, to widen Highway 1A through the community\, adapting the plans developed by ISL\, and taking it through to construction with the support of Provincial grant funding. This widening has long awaited by the Town and dovetails into ATEC’s major upgrade at the Highway 1A and 22 interchange. \nJohn and Melissa will discuss the Highway 1A Improvements project and the unique features involved when delivering a multiple jurisdictional highway project. They will also cover Urban Systems’ involvement in the Highway 1A/Highway 22 Project enabling works\, the collaborative process employed and unique tasks involved the work. John and Melissa will expand on the out-of-the-box collaborative thinking that got the project off to a successful start for all parties. \nATEC with ISL\, have advanced the interchange construction of Highway 1A and Highway 22\, tying into the Highway 1A Improvements. The interchange will support the growth of the Town\, improve access to this area\, allow efficient movement of goods and people\, and enhance safety.  Vamsi and Dominic will discuss the unique challenges presented by the project and lessons learned. \nThese long-awaited projects are being delivered in partnership with Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors and the Town of Cochrane. \nSpeakers: \nUrban Systems \n \nJohn Stevens: John has worked at Urban Systems for 6 years on a variety of transportation and local government projects. These projects include the 88th Street SE Skeletal Road extension\, the Hwy 1A/22 utility relocations project\, and the HWY 1A Improvements project of which the last two will be discussed today. Through these projects John has taken a more prominent role in liaising with the Town of Cochrane and was the project manager for both Hwy 1A Improvements project and Hwy1A/22 utility relocations project. Playing a role in improving these vital transportation connection projects for one of Alberta’s fastest growing communities has been a rewarding process and John looks forward to sharing this project with everyone. \n  \n  \n  \n \nMelissa Henderson: Melissa has worked at Urban Systems for the past 2 years as a civil engineer-in-training. Over these 2 years she has worked on a variety of projects with The Town of Cochrane\, including the Flood Recovery and Erosion Control projects\, and the HWY 1A/22 utility relocations project which will be discussed today. Melissa played a key role in supporting Urban System’s local government team on the Hwy 1A/22 utility relocations project as contract administrator. She is excited to share some of her experiences on the project and how collaboration with ISL and Alberta Transportation \nand Economic Corridors lead to greater success for all parties. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nISL \n \nVamsi Surapaneni: Vamsi is ISL’s lead design engineer for the Highway 1A/22 interchange. He developed the now in-construction solution within the constrained space of historic lands\, major utility pipeline corridor\, CPKC tracks\, and Bighill Creek. Thanks to Vamsi\, Cochrane is witness to over one million cubes of earth being moved at this site. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nDominic Cheng: Dominic is one of ISL’s long-standing team members involved with the design of Highway 1A from the top of the hill at Gleneagles Drive westward to Horse Creek Road. He has seen the design of Highway 1A/22 evolve from an intersection upgrade to the interchange that is under construction today.

How we allocate and design that space fundamentally influences the way a community looks\, feels and operates. No other aspect of engineering has such a critical role in shaping not just operational aspects of how people move\, but also the social\, economic and environmental outcomes for communities. While the practice of transportation engineering is evolving\, even today the tools and techniques used often result in poor outcomes for communities. While solving short-term vehicle transportation problems\, traditional methods can leave communities with long term congestion\, and safety and accessibility issues.  Canmore is unique only in it’s constraints\, and these constraints have forced the community to adopt integrated approaches sooner and more aggressively than most. \nThis tour will lead participants through a range of designs and show where a different set of priorities have been applied. Narrow traffic lanes\, windy roads\, wide paths\, separated bicycle facilities\, raised mid-block crossings\, continuous crossings\, and near-side traffic signals will be highlighted as emerging best-practice.  Benefits of the trade-offs between convenience while driving and place-making will be on display throughout\, including in areas where lanes have been narrowed\, turn bays have been removed\, and four-lane cross-sections have been converted to three-lane roads.  We will travel by bicycle on some of Canmore’s best and worst infrastructure to experience first-hand being placed in a variety of situations by designers.  It is hoped that through this short glimpse into different infrastructure types\, you’ll leave with a strong impression of the impacts that transportation designs can have on the way people travel\, and more importantly\, how community is created by roadway designs. All cycling abilities are welcome! \nTour Lead\n \nAndy Esarte is a civil engineer and graduate of the University of Western Ontario\, and has managed the engineering department for the Town of Canmore for the past 12 years. During that time he has overseen the development of Canmore’s first Integrated Transportation Plan in 2013 and subsequent update in 2018\, as well as Canmore’s first Integrated Parking Management Plan in 2018.  Prior to joining the Canmore team\, Andy worked as a project manager for light rail transit projects for the City of Calgary and designed bridges and heavy civil structures in consulting. \nResidents of Canmore since 2013\, Andy and his wife Karen have two young children aged 9 and 11. As a goal\, Andy aspires to creating a transportation network for Canmore that allows for safe and accessible travel by all residents and visitors to Canmore\, regardless of age or ability\, and with equity between travel modes.

SUMMARY:ITE Southern Alberta: July Luncheon – University of Calgary Presentations
DESCRIPTION:Date: July 11th\nTime: 11:30am-1pm\nLocation: Danish Canadian Club (727 11 Ave SW\, Calgary\, AB T2R 0E3)\nCost:\n$20 for Public Agency Members\n$35 for ITE members\n$40 for non-ITE members\n$15 for Student ITE Members\n($650 Sponsorship) \nJoin us for another luncheon presentation at the Canadian Danish Club! This month we will be featuring THREE presentations\, all from the University of Calgary: \nPresentation #1: Use of Crowd Source Data in Transport Planning and Traffic Management_ Intro to MTRADA\nTravel time estimation is an essential element in transport planning and traffic management. The intervention of intelligent transportation systems\, sensors systems and remote sensing methodologies has enabled to estimate travel times in high accuracy. Most of the travel time estimation models in the literature are inductive in nature\, which require vehicle travel time observations for calibration. Obtaining vehicle travel time data is both a time consuming and costly process for a single link and it is impractical to collect this information for all the links across the road network. Hence\, there is a need for travel time estimation models that are low in cost and more robust. Use of crowdsourced data and vehicle tracking techniques has further enhanced the estimation algorithms with accuracy and efficiency where use of google travel time data extracted from Google Distance Matrix API is a novel approach to gather representative information about real-time traffic conditions. \nM-TRADA (https://uom.lk/civil/transportation/software/mtrada) is a Cloud Based data mining platform to collect travel time data using Google map APIs. It was developed in year 2017 by Transportation Engineering Division\, Department of Civil Engineering\, University of Moratuwa. M-TRADA has now been developed in to a fully functional\, verified cloud-based platform. \nThe workshop will cover the methodology to collect travel time data with Google Distance Matrix API using MTRADA nd use of the method in transport planning and traffic management applications. \nBiography\nDimantha De Silva is a Principal Consultant at CPCS. He is also a sessional lecturer at the University of Calgary. Prior to that he was a Senior Lecturer at Department of Civil Engineering at University of Moratuwa. He received his M.Sc. in Transportation Engineering and B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the University of Moratuwa\, Sri Lanka and completed his PhD in Transportation Engineering from University of Calgary\, Canada. His research interests includes integrated land use transport demand modelling\, Big Data Analytics. \nPresentation #2: Designing Integrated Public Mobility in and Around University of Calgary\n(Description coming soon!) \nBiographies\nJoel Lethaby recently graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a Transportation Engineering minor. Joel now works for Associated Engineering as a Transportation Engineer-in-Training. Previously\, he completed a 16 month internship with Urban Systems where he was initially exposed to “complete street” style projects working on the Montgomery Main Streets Bowness Road project. This project sparked his passion for safe\, vibrant\, multi-modal streets\, and Joel hopes to work on more projects like this throughout his career. \nEremiahs Fikre is a recent Civil Engineering graduate. He is passionate about all things transportation engineering\, specifically traffic safety. During his undergraduate degree\, he completed an internship at the City of Edmonton with the Safe Mobility Team in which he helped with various initiatives for the Edmonton’s goal of Vision Zero by 2030. SUMMARY:ITE Southern Alberta Section: June Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:How Community Values Influence Transit Network Design – Coverage vs. Ridership\nTransit agencies are often tasked with two goals: attracting customers (ridership) and ensuring that service available to as many people as possible regardless if they will use it (coverage). Both are important but result in contradictory pressures for network design\, particularly in how an agency’s limited resources must be allocated across an urban area. \nThis creates an inherent trade-off\, where communities consider the relative importance of these two missions against broader societal goals. This can be answered\, in part\, by asking “who is transit for?” \nIn this talk\, Filip Majcherkiewicz (Team Lead of Service Planning\, Calgary Transit) will discuss how the degree to which coverage or ridership is prioritized can influence network design and overall service quality outcomes. \nBiography\n \n  \nFilip Majcherkiewicz is a Registered Professional Planner specializing in transit planning. He earned a Master of Planning degree at the University of Waterloo where his research focused on the land use impacts of Calgary’s LRT system. He joined Calgary Transit’s Service Planning division in 2014\, a team he now leads. Filip has led numerous transit service plans\, notably the launch of the MAX Bus Rapid Transit lines in 2018-19. Born and raised in Calgary\, his interests seek to understand the relationship between urban development patterns and travel behaviour\, and how to build multi-modal cities with equitable mobility networks. Outside of work Filip is still working to uncover the mysteries of truly amazing sourdough bread. You can usually find him catching a bus near you.

One avenue is demonstrating advanced knowledge and expertise as well as a high level of dedication through the achievement of certification. \nThis webinar will present an overview about the Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) and Professional Transportation Planner (PTP); Road Safety Professional\, Level 1 (RSP1); and Road Safety Professional Level 2 (RSP2) – certifications offered by the Transportation Professional Certification Board (www.tcb.org). In this webinar\, we will provide in-depth information about the RSP certification. \nThe RSP certification establishes a minimum level of knowledge based on the current state of practice\, encourages professional development and growth by applying new concepts\, and creates an environment for universities to expand their curriculum to produce graduates that are proficient in the field of safety. Certified road safety professionals will be recognized for their knowledge\, experience\, and expertise in road safety. \nWith increasing emphasis being placed on consideration of safety in all aspects of transportation management\, the need to recognize road safety as a distinct discipline becomes evident. In 2016\, the Transportation Professional Certification Board (TPCB) began efforts to develop a Road Safety Professional Certification (RSP). This effort is supported by a broad cross-section of transportation and safety organizations from the United States and Canada and provides two certification levels. This webinar will describe the areas that are covered under RSP Level 1 and RSP Level 2-Infrastructure and Behaviour and how they relate to consideration of safety within an individual’s job. This webinar will also provide the information needed to register and prepare for the certification exams. \nParticipants will also hear about the preparatory resources available through ITE as well as general information about the certification process. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nLearn how certification can benefit your career development and make you more attractive to prospective employers\nThe attendees will become familiar with the certifications offered by Transportation Professional Certification Board (TPCB)\nBecome familiar with the two domain areas of the safety disciplines (infrastructure and behaviour) that form the foundation for the RSP certifications.\nLearn about what is needed to apply for and to take the exam/s for potential certification/s at Level 1 and Level 2\nUnderstand general policies and procedures about the certification process\nLearn about available preparatory resources\n\nPresenter Bio\nGeni Bahar\, P.Eng.\, P.E.\, RSP | NAVIGATS Inc. \nMs. Geni Bahar\, P.Eng\, P.E. SUMMARY:ITE Southern Alberta Seasonal Patio Program
DESCRIPTION:Seasonal Patio Program\nPrior to 2020\, there were a half dozen restaurants in Calgary that built boardwalks and street patios during the summer months. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit\, and indoor dining was limited\, over 200 restaurants built expanded seasonal patios. Many restaurants communicated the seasonal patios provided a benefit to their business and to the vibrancy of the street\, and seasonal patios would be welcomed “post-pandemic”. The design\, safety and accessibility of seasonal patios has evolved from orange cones\, to boardwalk platforms with integrated public art and greenery. In this talk\, Andrew Sedor (Mobility Initiatives Lead for The City of Calgary) will discuss the history of the program\, and what to expect for the 2023 seasonal patio program. \n  \nAbout the Presenter:\nAndrew Sedor works as the Mobility Initiatives Lead at The City of Calgary. Andrew leads the shared e-Scooter and e-Bike program\, the seasonal patio program\, and other innovate projects occurring in The City’s road right of way. In his prior roles\, he led Canada’s first public-facing autonomous vehicle pilot\, authored Calgary’s Future of Transportation Report\, updated bylaws to accommodate new transportation technologies and trends\, launched The City of Calgary’s Living Lab program\, and led the University of Calgary Wearable’s collaboration. Andrew also teaches a course in Urban Planning at the University of Calgary\, and holds a master’s degree in Land Economics from the University of Cambridge.

SUMMARY:Southern Alberta ITE Luncheon - Managing Privacy Considerations for Mobility Data
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Matt Worona \nPresentation Title: Managing Privacy Considerations for Mobility Data \nPresentation Description: Over the last few years\, many Alberta cities have launched scootershare and e-bikeshare programs. With those services has come a rigorous set of data-sharing requirements that allow cities to use trip and route data to evaluate system performance and deliver day-to-day management. Granular data sharing of this kind is likely to grow and encompass more mobility options and aspects of the transportation network. \nWhile this data has many applications for urban planning and understanding the nature of transportation\, it also comes with privacy challenges. Drawing on his experience\, Matt will present the current practice for storing\, using and de-risking shared personally identifiable mobility data for public agencies. \nMatt’s Bio: As a member of the Open Mobility Foundation’s Privacy\, Security and Transparency Committee\, Matt helped write two foundational documents in mobility data governance (the MDS Privacy Guide for Cities and the Privacy Principles for Mobility Data). Matt also developed and launched the first scootershare program in British Columbia while working for the City of Kelowna and brings experience managing the largest global shared micromobility company’s Canadian presence. \nMatt is a highly skilled transportation practitioner with more than seven years experience working on progressive transportation projects across Canada. This includes experience in curb management\, micromobility\, shared mobility\, data governance and active transportation.

SUMMARY:SA ITE January Luncheon and Open House
DESCRIPTION:Open House: \nThis year\, SA ITE is giving the opportunity for its Members at Large to be more involved with the chapter event planning and execution. We will be hosting an open house prior to the luncheon where attendees will be invited to “register” for different event tasks throughout the year. Opportunity to register to present at a specific event will also be provided. \nLuncheon Presentation: \nUrban mobility and last mile logistics is an emerging area for researchers responding to the mandate to build more sustainable cities. Jacob Lamb`s field of study relates to Intermodal strategies for emerging autonomous delivery technology in urban centres. Using Calgary as a case study\, he will discuss how a two-stage cost allocation method with integrated GIS modelling can be used to identify the required number of micro-fulfillment centres in a city\, and where they should be located in order to minimize the costs for a drone delivery service. He will also cover developing approximations for routing methods a “mothership” van can use to deploy a fleet of autonomous sidewalk delivery robots in an urban area. Finally\, Jacob will provide his perspectives on how this tool can be used by public agencies and authorities looking for transparent and defendable approaches to include in their emerging autonomous delivery technology strategies. \n  \nLast mile goods delivery and autonomous vehicles have been identified as a disruptive technology in the Calgary Goods Movement Strategy. Canadian cities and towns are already test beds for this technology causing political and societal interest; see Toronto’s recent ban on sidewalk autonomous delivery robots. With Calgary seen as a leader in the micro-mobility space it is only a matter of time until drones\, sidewalk robots\, and autonomous delivery vehicles make it to Calgary’s streets. Jacob hopes this presentation will prepare the community for the arrival of these technologies and equip them with knowledge and some tools to best integrate them peacefully\, safely\, and productively into our city. \nBio for Jacob Lamb\, University of Calgary \nPhD Student of Transportation Engineering at the University of Calgary\, Canada \nAnalyst at Associated Engineering’s Strategic Advisory Services \nJacob Lamb is a PhD Candidate at the University of Calgary\, Canada\, supervised by Professor S. C. Wirasinghe and Professor Emeritus N. M. Waters\, in the department of Civil Engineering. Jacob also works as an analyst at Associated Engineering in the Strategic Advisory Services team focussing on Intelligent Transportation Systems. With his thesis\, in logistics and transportation\, Jacob is integrating the most advanced continuum approximation modeling methods with modern Geographic Information Systems to understand how autonomous vehicles may change the urban goods delivery system. Jacob previously consulted as the Commercial Vehicle Team Lead at the Transition Accelerator\, Edmonton Region Hydrogen Hub in 2020\, where he secured demonstrations of fuel cell trucks in Edmonton in 2021. In all areas of work\, he aims to encourage sustainable and transparent business decisions and government policy.

SUMMARY:Understanding and Advancing Equity in Transportation Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Meaningful integration of equity in transportation planning and design has rapidly emerged as an important priority for communities across North America. However\, best practices for incorporating equity into transportation projects have not yet been widely developed or shared. ITE International’s newly formed Equity Subcommittee is seeking to develop tools\, advocate\, educate\, and set a leadership example in our profession in making transportation equity a priority and changing the future of mobility for all users. \nThis month’s luncheon will take the form of a collaborative workshop exploring how transportation practitioners can meaningfully incorporate equity considerations into their projects. Mariam Bello (City of Calgary) will present on her experience as part of ITE’s Equity Committee\, and share lessons learned from several equity themed sessions held at the ITE Canada Conference in May. David Sutanto (Steer) will share his experience working in the UK on recommended best practices for incorporating equity considerations into transportation planning projects. \nFollowing the presentations\, we will convene several small group discussions to explore additional sharing\, questions\, best practices\, and what more our ITE Southern Alberta Section can be doing to advance and strengthen equity integration into transportation work. \nEvent Location: Stantec Office Innovation Studio – 200-325 25 St SE\, Calgary\, AB T2A 7H8

SUMMARY:SAITE July 2022 Bike Tour
DESCRIPTION:We’re going biking! \nCome join us on a bike tour of new projects around Downtown Calgary! We’ll discuss different designs\, what we like about them\, what we don’t like. We’ll also discuss some of the project considerations and why specific designs were chosen over others. \nWe’ll begin the tour near Bow Cycle in East Village. So\, if you do not have a bicycle\, you can arrange to rent one for the afternoon. Note that SA ITE will not be arranging any bike rentals for attendees. \nWe’ll end the tour at Parlour Ice Cream\, also in East Village\, you can grab a much deserved snack and head to the nearby public space for some informal mingling/networking time. \nThe cost for the tour is a sliding scale ($10-$30)…please donate as much as you feel comfortable. \nAll funds will go to a not-for-profit bicycle charity Two Wheel View. They’re mission is “to provide programs that use the bicycle as a vehicle for change in the lives of youth.” \n
