She aims to support infrastructure and operational decision-making for adaptation\, emergency planning\, and community resilience\, and train values-driven engineering practitioners and researchers.  \nAmy was at the University of Alberta prior to joining UBC in 2021. Between her MS and PhD studies at the University of California\, Berkeley\, Amy worked in the transportation consulting practice in California and BC\, working on major projects such as the Gateway Program and Evergreen Line. In under two weeks\, a dedicated team of designers and decision-makers worked hard to turn opportunity into reality. \nTrevor Demerse\, P. Eng. is a Senior Traffic Operations Engineer for the Province of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Applied Science degree from UBC’s Okanagan Campus. He serves as Vice President of the ITE Greater Vancouver Section\, is an elected member of the Professional Employees Association Bargaining Committee\, and volunteers as the EGBC Registration Mentor for the BC Ministry of Transportation and Transit’s Accredited Employer program. It’s through these varied roles that Trevor works to advance both the Transportation Profession and its practitioners\, no matter what stage of their career they’re at. His work focuses on emerging personal transportation technologies\, such as e-bikes and e-scooters. Most recently\, he is working on evaluating the GHG impacts of BC’s e-bike incentive program. Amir also serves as a sessional lecturer at UBC\, teaching transportation engineering fundamentals to 4th-year civil engineering students. The virtual seminar will be free and online. \nNovember 15\, 2023\, marked the two-year anniversary of the atmospheric river and subsequent historic flooding and landslides that caused extensive damage to the highway and across the Province of British Columbia. Less than two years after the historic event and two months ahead of schedule\, all final permanent bridges on Highway 5 at Jessica\, Juliet\, and Bottletop are open to public traffic in permanent four-lane configuration\, as the Project reached substantial completion. Highway 5 is now more resilient and reliable\, supporting the movement of people and goods along this important corridor. The new bridges are built to withstand high water levels by using deep-pile footings and longer spans. Large rock protection has been added to protect the bridges from erosion and scour. Trees\, shrubs and grasses have also been planted to encourage stream-side re-vegetation and support overall restoration of aquatic and land habitat. In total\, the alliance team and local Indigenous communities planted around 4\,500 native plants at these sites to help return the environment to its natural landscape. \nVictor Wang is a Professional Engineer with 30 years of experience and expertise in transportation engineering and planning. He also possesses the Master of Engineering degree with strong background in different phases of infrastructure projects. One of the most challenging locations along the Central Valley Greenway is an 850-metre section of Still Creek Avenue through an industrial area in the City of Burnaby. The City retained TranSafe Consulting Ltd. in conjunction with Urban Systems Ltd. to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the safety performance of this roadway for cyclists and pedestrians\, and to develop options and recommendations for improving the cycling and walking experience. Recognizing the safety issues identified\, the City subsequently adopted an innovative rapid implementation approach to install interim safety improvements using low-cost\, adjustable materials in December\, 2021. The interim design was developed through engagement with businesses along the corridor to allow the project team to incorporate their operational requirements. \nPo is a transportation planner with over 10 years of public and private sector experience that has spanned transportation plans at the city\, neighborhood and corridor levels\, including the design and implementation of multimodal mobility and complete street safety improvements. (GHEC)\, the Study was conducted by reviewing the collisions that caused fatalities or serious injuries. This Study includes a review of the collision data\, screening for priority locations\, assessment of selected site conditions\, identification of safety issues and the development of recommended mitigating measures. \nUltimately\, the Study was done to align with the City’s Connecting Burnaby strategic plan and its goals and targets to strive for a safer city and road networks. SUMMARY:GVITE Webinar - Transportation Network Efficiency with Demand Responsive Services
DESCRIPTION:Transportation Network Efficiency with Demand Responsive Services\n Abstract: \nOn-demand dynamically routed transportation systems can provide seamless door-to-door mobility including with multi-passenger trips. Although this is a compelling vision\, there are also potential downsides. This presentation compares the transportation performance of single-occupant and multi-occupant on-demand transportation systems to private vehicle use and standard bus service with fixed routes and timetables. The performance is measured and compared using average journey time\, total vehicle kilometres travelled\, and the number of vehicles that are required to meet demand and performance thresholds. \nTo conduct this analysis\, a flexible generic city model was created. This model was developed with characterises representative of a typical North American city including the arterial street network spacing and travel times\, the population density and travel demand patterns\, and the time-of-day travel demand profile. Using this flexible generic city model\, these performance outcomes are evaluated under several different contexts as the characteristics of the city are varied. PTV Visum/MaaS software was utilized to conduct this evaluation. \nUnder the transportation contexts evaluated (relatively large cities with relatively high travel demand)\, traditional fixed-route transit service substantially outperforms demand-responsive multi-occupant services on the transportation metrics evaluated. The relative benefits of transit service tend to be greater as mode share increases and as the size of the service area increases. \nThese results suggest that when automated vehicle technology becomes commonplace\, for large cities the best use may be in increasing the service frequency of traditional transit services on the arterial street network\, rather than by implementing demand-responsive dynamically routed services. The advantages of on-demand services are highest in smaller service areas with low demand for shared transportation. DESCRIPTION:About the Presentation: \nIn 2019\, the City of Richmond partnered with ICBC and retained ISL Engineering and Land Services\, in association with G. Ho Engineering Consultants\, to undertake the Network Screening Study (the Study). The objective of the Study was to review all 1\,617 intersections in the city to identify and prioritize the top 20 locations with the highest risk of collisions\, and develop mitigation measures to determine where road safety improvement investments should be directed to achieve the greatest safety benefits.  The results of the Study lead to various actions taken by the City as part of its overall effort to address road safety issues. \nThis presentation will provide the background\, methodology\, and Study findings\, as well as new safety initiatives taken by the City. \n  \nAbout the Presenters: \nFred Lin\, P.Eng. PTOE\nSenior Transportation Engineer\, City of Richmond\nFred Lin is a Senior Transportation Engineer with the City of Richmond\, with 20+ years of experience in transportation planning and traffic engineering. SUMMARY:GVITE Online Presentation: Alex Fraser Bridge Improvement Project
DESCRIPTION:About the Presentation: \nThe Alex Fraser Bridge Improvement Project is the most recent recipient of GVITE’s Bill Curtis Award for an outstanding transportation project. \nWith upwards of 120\,000 vehicles using the Alex Fraser Bridge daily\, congestion was a growing problem. Motorists were experiencing excessive delays and queues more than three kilometres long during rush hours. The BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure’s Alex Fraser Bridge Improvement Project greatly improved conditions with the addition of a seventh lane\, an innovative movable barrier counter-flow system\, and 13 new dynamic message signs throughout the Lower Mainland. \nThe Project has resulted in approximately 20-minutes travel time savings during the southbound PM peak\, and approximately 10-minutes travel time savings during the northbound AM peak. \nBinnie/MOTI’s innovative design represents the first and only moveable barrier counter-flow system in western Canada. \n  \nAbout the Presenters: \nEdmund Lee\, P.Eng.\nTransportation Major Projects Division Manager\, Principal\nR.F. Binnie & Associates Ltd.\n\nEdmund Lee is a Division Manager at Binnie\, with 31 years of experience in the areas of roadway design\, traffic engineering\, and transportation planning. Edmund has specialized expertise in the areas of highway planning and highway conceptual\, preliminary and detailed designs\, through direct involvement in numerous major interchange/intersection and highway corridor projects throughout the Lower Mainland. \nSimon Church\, P.Eng.\nAssistant Project Manager\, Associate\nR.F. Binnie & Associates Ltd.\nSimon Church is a Project Engineer with Binnie’s Transportation Major Projects division. Simon has 10 years of experience working on large transportation projects in BC and Alberta\, primarily during the construction phase.
