Roadway Operations & Detours Engineer-In-Training

The City of Calgary is hiring up to two Engineer-in-Training (EIT) positions for the Roadway Operations & Detours team within the Traffic Services Division. As an EIT, you will support the safe and efficient movement of all transportation network users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists, by contributing to the review, design, and implementation of temporary traffic control and roadway operations initiatives.

Primary duties include:

  • Review and provide comments on third-party temporary traffic control (TTC) plans in accordance with The City of Calgary Temporary Traffic Control Manual and applicable technical standards to ensure the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and worksite personnel.
  • Develop TTC plans and detour designs that support construction, maintenance, special events, and operational activities.
  • Review permit applications for activities within City right-of-way, and work with applicants to communicate TTC requirements, permit conditions, and necessary design modifications.
  • Coordinate with interested parties, including contractors, project teams, businesses, and the public to support safe and efficient detour implementation.
  • Collaborate with internal groups including Signals Construction, Signals Engineering, Transit, Traffic Field Operations, and the Traffic Management Centre.
  • Conduct field inspections to assess the compliance of detour setups with approved TTC plans, permit conditions, bylaws, and relevant standards.
  • Identify issues and coordinate with contractors or permit holders to implement corrective actions.
  • Respond to inquiries and concerns from the public, contractors, Ward offices, and City staff received via 311, email, and telephone.
  • Provide guidance to consultants, private contractors, City staff, and the public regarding TTC requirements, roadway operations, construction impacts, and special events.
  • Contribute to strategic planning and continuous improvement initiatives related to operational processes, team workflows, and permitting functions.
  • Perform data collection and analysis to support operational decision-making and assist team members with both technical and administrative tasks.
  • Participate in the development of policies, procedures, and guidelines for roadway operations and detours, including researching best practices and identifying new technologies and trends.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Engineering (preferably Civil Engineering), and current registration as an EIT with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), or registration by the first day of work.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience as an EIT is preferred.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s License (or provincial equivalent), with no more than 6 demerits, and no current suspensions or pending charges. A personal vehicle is required for business purposes.
  • Coursework or experience in traffic engineering, transportation planning, detour design, or road safety will be considered an asset.
  • Experience designing or implementing temporary traffic controls as well as the use of CAD software are considered assets.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively, build relationships, and manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to interpret technical information, follow direction, and work efficiently prioritize work.
  • Detail-oriented and comfortable conducting field inspections in a variety of environmental conditions.

Pre-employment Requirements

  • A security clearance will be conducted.
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.

Pre-employment Drug Screening

An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.

Compensation: Pay Grade 10 $42.62 – 56.97 per hour

Days of Work: This position works a 5 day work week with 1 day off in a 3-week cycle.
Hours of work: Standard 35-hour work week
