Position Overview
Responsible for planning and coordinating data collection activities, conducting studies, analyzing transportation/traffic data, preparing plans and reports, compiling statistical records and performing field inspection duties in the areas of traffic engineering.

Responsibilities
• Conducts traffic studies including reviewing the need for various traffic control devices, monitoring changes in traffic volumes and providing projections related to employment and population.
• Analyzes data compiled from traffic studies utilizing associated computer software producing reports and summaries of same.
• Assists in the preparation of assigned technical reports and provides recommendations related to in-house traffic operation studies and transportation planning studies.
• Coordinates and oversees data collection activities of assigned technical staff and contractors.
• Reviews transportation implications of assigned development proposals including the analysis of transportation impact studies for site plans, zoning and official plan applications.
• Monitors contract schedules, inspects work and reviews invoices/payment certificates for traffic control device installations.
• Conducts various collision analysis studies utilizing confidential police collision reports, makes recommendations on improving traffic safety and maintains and updates traffic collision files/database.
• Prepares pavement marking designs in accordance with Provincial and Municipal standards, liaises with contractors, co-ordinates operations with other departments and assists in the review of the annual pavement marking program.
• Reviews the integrity of the traffic signal facility and the traffic signal operation.
• Inspects traffic signs to ensure compliance of City and provincial standards and prepares deficiency reports.
• Prepares work orders for assigned revisions or new installations of traffic signage including regulatory warning information in accordance with City Policy and standards.
• Provides technical assistance in the preparation of the annual operating and capital budget as required.
• Attends internal and public meetings and participates on job related committees as assigned.
• Responds to or refers inquiries as appropriate from the general public, other departments, community groups and/or other levels of government relating to traffic matters.
• Performs other related duties which may occur in an unplanned or emergency situation.

Qualifications and Experience
Education:
• Community College Diploma in Transportation/Civil Engineering Technology or suitable equivalent.
• Maintain membership in the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists as a Certified Engineering Technologist.
OR
• University Degree in Transportation/Civil Engineering Technology/Applied Science/Planning/Geography or related field.
• Maintain Professional Engineer designation.

Length of Experience:
• Minimum of three (3) years progressively more responsible transportation/traffic engineering experience, preferably in a municipal environment and including one (1) year experience coordinating the work of others. (College Diploma)
OR
• Minimum of six (6) months transportation/traffic engineering experience, preferably in a municipal environment. (University Degree)

Knowledge/Skill/Abilities:
• Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public, possess good written and oral communication skills.
• Working knowledge of computer techniques and applications for traffic engineering.
• Availability to work flexible hours as may be required to accommodate meetings and/or traffic surveys.
• Valid Class “G” driver’s license in good standing and a reliable vehicle to use on corporate business.
