The City of Guelph is advancing an equity‑centered Vision Zero Action Plan that aims to eliminate severe injuries and fatalities on city streets. This presentation explores how Guelph is integrating equity principles into collision analysis, street design, community engagement, and priority‑setting to ensure that road safety improvements benefit residents who face the greatest mobility barriers.

Dr. Liraz Fridman is a Canadian injury epidemiologist who transforms evidence into meaningful, on‑the‑ground road safety improvements. She leads Guelph’s Vision Zero Action Plan, serves as President of the Canadian Association of Road Safety Professionals (CARSP), and founded the Canadian LeadHERs in Road Safety to champion women’s leadership across the country. Fluent in three languages, she moves easily between communities, disciplines, and perspectives—bringing research, collaboration, and lived experience together to shape safer, more equitable communities. With a strong belief that communications, public narratives, and political will are central to Canada’s progress on Vision Zero, she works to bridge the gap between data, policy, and the people they’re meant to serve. Her work is grounded in both expertise and everyday life, inspired constantly by her two young boys who remind her why safe streets matter.

Nico Koenig is the Transportation Safety Specialist for the City of Guelph and works at the intersection of equity, mobility, and place making. His practice as a transportation planner is informed by 15 years in field of community development and adult education. Prior to his work leading Vision Zero in Guelph, he supported Canada’s National Active Transportation Strategy and led Ontario’s longest running School Street.
