Greater Vancouver 2024 Treasurer Election

The Greater Vancouver Section of ITE is holding an election for the forthcoming 2024 Treasurer position. We have two candidates interested in this position. The virtual ballots will be provided as an e-mail to all current ITE Greater Vancouver members facilitated by ITE Canada. A brief statement and bio for each candidate is provided below.

The candidates for 2024 treasurer are:

Kurtis Mayne

As a proud member of the professional transportation community and member of ITE, I am pleased to announce my candidacy for the Treasurer position of the Greater Vancouver ITE Section. I have been proud to call Surrey my home for the last seven years since moving from Kelowna, where I completed my Bachelor of Applied Science in Civil Engineering at UBC Okanagan.

As an executive member of Young Professionals in Transportation (YPT) Vancouver Chapter since 2017, I have enjoyed contributing positively to the transportation community by hosting networking events and mentoring and connecting with many young professionals in the industry.

I have embraced the opportunity to build working relationships with many people in our transportation community while working at ISL Engineering as a Transportation Engineer. My technical experience includes traffic and transportation assessments, traffic impact studies, parking studies, transportation planning, multi-modal planning and studies, road and rail safety, traffic calming studies, and road design projects.

My vision and goals as a member of the Greater Vancouver ITE Executive role is to listen, collaborate and bring ideas to the table to encourage further engagement and interest in the local chapter activities and events.

With your vote, I promise to bring my positive attitude and sense of humor to the Greater Vancouver ITE Section Executive Team to continue the great work they are doing for transportation professionals in our region.

Kurtis Mayne, P.Eng., PTOE
Transportation Engineer, ISL Engineering

Trevor Demerse

Thank you for the opportunity to introduce myself! My name is Trevor and as a proud member of ITE I am excited to run as candidate for Treasurer of the ITE Greater Vancouver Section.

The successful Treasurer candidate sets off on a multi-year journey of contribution and development as they step through the section’s various leadership positions culminating in the Presidency. What prompted me to step forward for consideration is the prospect of learning from each of you while supplying my proven mentorship, leadership, and technical abilities.

I will draw from a broad base of organizational experience including:

  • Having already served ITE as Past Vice President of the UBC Okanagan ITE Student Chapter and as a charter member
  • 4 years serving new professionals entering the Transportation profession as volunteer Registration Mentor as part of a collaboration between BC MoTI and EGBC via the Accredited Employer Program
  • Organizing the Ministry of Transportation as Transition Lead toward compliance with the new requirements of the Professional Governance Act
  • Over 10 years experience in Transportation Planning and Traffic Operations Roles including several years in senior technical positions, having been awarded the prestigious Premier’s Award for my work as part of the massive 2021 Atmospheric River response
  • Dedication to advancing active transportation and transit integration through my professional practice

It is my hope that this experience shows my dedication to our industry and my ongoing engagement in some of the realities facing our sector. I see the development of new professionals, awareness of changes to our evolving regulatory environment, the integration of Planning professionals into ITE, resiliency in the face of our changing climate, and the industry-wide push toward Active Transportation as top priorities that I will focus on through my tenure.

I believe we have strong momentum to build on and there is energy to be harnessed from all levels of ITE. The OneITE initiative, launch of the ITE TrafficWiki, ITE Canada 2022/2023 Strategic Communications Implementation Plan, and collaboration with our Planning colleagues are excellent opportunities to grow a section. The ITE Canada Executive has communicated that they are looking to support sections aiding in the development of an updated Section Strategic Plan and by surfacing section activities on social media. I believe the effort spent in creating a strategic plan will benefit members presenting how the organization intends to put ideas into practice.

Finally, I want to end with a statement on diversity and inclusion. An ITE Greater Vancouver Section that represents our Transportation Community is crucial to our success. I wholly endorse the work of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee and will work to ensure our section contributes to the ITE 2023 Diversity and Inclusion Goals and Initiatives.

I hope that my passion, experience, and willingness to engage gives you confidence that I am the right person to serve as Treasurer and join our organization’s excellent leadership. I appreciate your consideration and support!

Sincerely,
Trevor
