Don’t miss this chance to be recognized nationally for your outstanding projects or contributions and to nominate deserving colleagues or employees! Nominations and applications for the ITE Canada 2025 Excellence in Transportation Awards close Saturday, March 1, 2025.
Scholarships and awards with monetary value are administered by the Future Transportation Leaders Fund. ITE Canada established the Future Transportation Leaders Fund in 2023 as a charitable foundation to support the next generation of transportation leaders in Canada.
ITE Canada is pleased to announce a brand new scholarship offered on behalf of the Future Transportation Leaders Fund: the John Morrall Innovation in Transportation Scholarship. This new $2,000 scholarship is for full-time students in the first 18 months of their thesis-based transportation Master’s or Doctorate-level program and encourages research projects in transportation planning and engineering. The award is funded by the former Centre for Transportation Engineering and Planning (CTEP), founded in 2000 by Dr. John Morrall and Harvey Olsen as a Canadian Centre of Excellence to facilitate the growth and enhancement of transportation knowledge through education and research. The scholarship is named after Dr. Morrall to recognize his illustrious career with notable impact on road safety practice.

Summary of Changes for 2025
Reflecting changes to the ITE International Awards Program for 2025, ITE Canada is also introducing updates to some of our awards, summarized below.
John Morrall Innovation in Transportation Scholarship
- This new $2,000 scholarship is for full-time students in the first 18 months of their thesis-based transportation Master’s or Doctorate-level program.
- The award is adjudicated based on the submission of a 500-word abstract of how their research will contribute to the body of knowledge in the transportation industry
- Word Count Clarification: In-text citations now count toward the overall word count, but tables, figures, and reference lists do not. Wordcount must be included on title page.
Transportation Achievement Awards
- New Individual Category: A submission category for individuals has been added for 2025. This is in addition to the five categories for organization/project submissions. ITE Canada will accept submissions for individual excellence in transportation to be considered and one may be chosen to nominate to ITE International. These individual submissions will not be considered for the Stan Teply Outstanding Technical Project Award.
- Clarification on Project Status: Only completed projects or those significantly underway will be considered.
- Outstanding Section Award
- As before, a Section Annual Report must be submitted by March 1 to be considered for the Oustanding Section Award
- Emphasis on Specific Meetings and Highlights: Submissions should focus on notable meetings or events that were particularly well received, including joint meetings with other groups.
- Updated Criteria: Greater emphasis on diversity, inclusion, and K-12 STEM outreach.
- Section Momentum Award
- Sections will be asked when submitting your Annual Report if you’d like to be considered for the Section Momentum Award and, if so, be required to submit a ~100-word summary describing specific improvements or special efforts that Section leadership has implemented in the previous calendar year. If chosen, the Section will be asked to prepare a longer narrative for submission to ITE International.
- Expanded Criteria: Updates in criteria to differentiate this award from the Outstanding Section Award and focus on innovative programs and overcoming challenges, particularly for newer sections or those that have faced struggles.
- Focus on Diversity and Inclusion: Increased emphasis on engaging diverse members and expanding outreach efforts.
- Outstanding Student Chapter Award
- As before, a Student Chapter Annual Report must be submitted by March 1 to be considered for the Oustanding Student Chapter Award
- Inclusion of Non-Traditional Disciplines: Chapters are encouraged to engage students from outside the traditional transportation curriculum.
- Student Chapter Momentum Award
- Student Chapters will be asked when submitting your Annual Report if you’d like to be considered for the Student Chapter Momentum Award and, if so, be required to submit a ~100-word summary describing specific improvements or special efforts that Student Chapter leadership has implemented in the previous calendar year. If chosen, the Student Chapter will be asked to prepare a longer narrative for submission to ITE International.
- Expanded Criteria: Updates in criteria to differentiate this award from the Outstanding Student Chapter Award and focus on specific areas or one area of improvement for the student chapter. The submission narrative should include efforts to broaden participation beyond traditional engineering students.
- Leadership and Skill Development: Judges will prioritize chapters that highlight leadership growth and skill-building initiatives.
